OK, Alright, I know, I know, I have been telling everyone that this is a freak current and not to expect this sort of freak occurance to last for any length of time. I started to make those comments a few weeks back and now I am thinking that these strange conditions may continue into Spring. I am not saying winte

<img class="size-full wp-image-1103" title="12 05 08 8 hrs Cpt.
r fishing is done, but I am saying you will find species at our world famous fishing grounds that, well, shouldn´t be there!

El Banco, after a miserable summer last year, we are seeing Yellowfin Tuna Action anywhere from five miles before the high spots to ten miles or so off the points. Yep, YF Tuna in the 40 t to 200 lb rang is possible if you have a mind to set out and take a chance. Yellowfin here at El Banco is anything but automatic. For those who understand what the term ¨Fishing¨ means, then this is pure fishing where you may come in with an empty fish box. On the other hand you will probably come in with either Y ellowfin Tuna, Sailfish, Dorado or even a Striped Marlin. Roll the dice amigo, if you´re looking for guarantees you´d be better off waiting until summer before heading out.

Corbeteña has always had fish, the only question for Anglers is if they wanted to catch a specific species or it they were open to catching what was out there. Now we all know we get what we get, again this is fishing and there are no waiting lines for your bait amigo. Those with the time, money and bones to take a chance are finding Dorado up to 40 lbs, Striped Marlin, Cubera Snappers, Sailfish and who knows what else is out there. Some days live bait, other days lures. My suggestion is to run both, changing color often until something works, then stick with that! Keep in mind that fish move, but the area golden triange, the area between El Banco, Corbeteña and the Marietta Islands have been churning and producing lately so don´t lock your mind into a rut or box. My best spots are between the Marietta Islands and Corbeteña for the moment. So keep this to yourself and start trolling after passing the islands towards the Rock!

Dorado and Rooster Fish at the Islands

The bay has done the same amigos… All of a sudden the Yellowfin Tuna that have been hanging out in front of Yelapa have started taking baits (lures and live bait). 30 lb Yellowfin Footballs are are abundant, but they will be work. Mimic the local bait fish in the area. If that means you´re using micro hooks with teeny tiny sardines, then this is what you have to do. For t hose willing to put in the effort there is the reward of Tuna on the table tonight. Or you can do like most of these lazy captains and just troll a Google eye and call that an effort. This is why you pay more for a boa t and captain, t hey work for their money because their reputation is on the line and they know I am watching. Some smaller Dorado has been also boated by accident, so give it a try and see what happens.

Now the Islands, El Morro and the Marietta’s have been hanging steady for the last couple of weeks. Rooster fish are still in the area and are a little more abundant than last week. Bonito in the 30 lb range, Sailfish on occasion, Dorado can be large at times to 40 lbs or so, Jack Crevalls are strong at 35 lbs, Snappers, Pompano and the list goes on. An eight hour trip is now worth your time and money. Super Pangas can get you to the fish for a more affordable price and if you put your name on my list I will hook you up others looking to share a Super Panga for 8 hrs, $225.00 usd for half the boat, 2 people max. Just let me know if you´re interested.

You may ask yourself what the deal is here with Dorado in late January, well we´re all scratching out heads. It appears the cold water from the north as normal has been cut off by a warm current coming in from the west which means the Hawaii area currents have made a hard right turn and are giving us these spring fishing conditions. Now the Whales may not like this much, but the tourist looking to catch fish on a shorter day can come in satisfied and happy with their catch.

I was hesitant to get too excited about these warm currents moving into the area because in fishing things can be short lived. I am now thinking that this could continue into spring and if this is true those who are here in Puerto Vallarta (PV) can have a wonderful day on the water and catch summer species and not have to bake like a potato under an equator sun to boat that bucket list fish.

Like always, stay tuned, if I don`t post an article, it means things have not changed….

Remember, this is my blog, my regular weekly fishing reports are normally posted by Tuesdays so book mark this page and my home page (www.masterbaiters.com.mx) and get it from both angles.

Hello everyone… Fishing here in Puerto Vallarta has gotten to the strange and almost unbelievable.

First, blue, blue water, bluer than at El Banco or Corbeteña has moved into the Bay of Banderas. We have seen Yellowfin Tuna for the last few weeks that are very large in front of Yelapa but you´d be hard pressed to get them to take a bait. Then BAM, Dorado move into the area, that´s right amigos they are in the bay, at the points of Punta Mita, Just before you hit Cabo Corrientes. The Marietta Islands have added Dorado to the list as well. The surprise here is the simple fact that the water is much colder than they like, but there is bait in the bay and while the water is cool, not cold, Dorado can be boated off Los Arcos! I mean I have never seen this before in mid January to have Dorado on our door step.

Dorado on Guanatuna II at The Marietta Islands

Sailfish, yes Sailfish are now taking bait as well and are in the Marietta Island and El Morro Area. There was even a Sailfish hook-up on Guanatuna II yesterday, but Capt. Juan and the boys lost it because nobody expected to have a hundred pound fish on light line! The Bait is still plentiful, so if you know what is going on, tell me please.

At El Banco, we have been waiting for Yellowfin All summer long to turn up, disappointing summer at The Bank for sure. Then all of a sudden El Banco lights up like a Christmas Tree with Yellowfin From 60 to 160 lbs! Now this does not happen in January at El Banco, at the Tres Maria Islands, yes but not El Banco (The Bank in English). Finding YF Tuna on the way to those islands was a blessing from the fish gods and made these Fishin Safari guys happy if for nothing else, shortening the day and coming in with Yellowfin anyway!

Rooster Fish, Capt Cesar on Magnifico on his ¨day off¨

No word on Corbeteña, but if the Bank is hitting then Corbeteña is never far behind.

Rooster fish, Snappers to 35 lbs, Dorado, Sailfish, Pompano, and the list goes on for an 8 hour trip to the islands or the points. The Bonito, Arctic Bonito I sh ould say have gotten larger in size to anywhere from 10 lbs to 35 lbs, many times these are also referred to as Skip Jack Tuna and are great tasting just like Yellowfin Tuna….

For the guy looking for Summer fishing in January, if you hurry you have a shot at the improbable for a short time. Si tuat ions or conditions like this a re never long lived. If we get three days of t his sort of thing we´re lucky. It has been two days now and today so we may see this change again shortly if not already.

Snappers, Jack Crevalls, Sierra Mackerals, Rooster fish, it´s all out there!

For more information you can check out my web page for the latest fishing report (www.masterbaiters.com.mx). Wit h more fish and more options the crowded conditions at the Marietta Islands should spread them all out again. Nothing worse than having a boat cross you line as other boats try to invade your bait ball. Happens all the time and it is not cool for sure! For guys like me, I see my lures, hooks and fluorocarbon leaders wasted which cost me money because some guy is rude and does not care that I had my favorite lucky lure in this fishs mouth… This is the stuff that causes dock fights and hard feelings. So if this is you, don´t do that!

You name it, Jeff McGuire caught it..

Why is this happening, well who knows. Cold water currents from up north have done some strange moves. The Jet stream is pushing warm currents to the west coast of the Americas. Basically these currents have to be coming from Hawaii, there is no o ther explanation amigos. But nwhat ever the answer is, the fishing has improved dramatically and is well worth your time. The days are sunny and warm, the evenings have a bit of a chill in the air for me, but visitors th ink I am nuts for wearing a jacket! I guess I have been here in PV for too many years and my blood is as thin as water.

Well that is it for now… Take Care….

Roosters are Biting Mid Day, Crowds Hit The Mariettas, Tempers Flare….

By Stan Gabruk

We´ve had Rooster Fish, Sailfish and even Yellowfin Tuna all over the place for weeks now, the issue has been getting these fish to pay attention to your bait. Of course with the hugely abundant bait in the bay, there is no reason for them to pay attention to what you have to offer ! The bait balls are still out there, but for some reason around mid day the Rooster fish have been coming up and taking what ever is thrown in front of them. This is good news, the bad news is there are so many boats in the same exact area that of course this is driving down the fish. Basically like normal too many boats drives the fish down and away. It doesn´t help that when there is a hook-up boats come at you like Missles looking to hook into the boil and get clients fish. So this also means people, I should say low rent captains are ultimately getting between you and your fish…. and of course this causes lost fish, cut lines (the worst) and people looking for the ass that has so little respect for their fellow anglers that on the docks it is no surprise people are looking for these captains!

Roger Collard and my friend Sammy wanted th eir pictures taken in front of the shop, Nice 45lb Roosters on Guanatuna II at El Morro

Having Said that, Guanatuna II our 28ft Super Panga with Capt. Juan Boated seven Rooster fish 45 lbs or so, several Snappers, Bonito and Sierra Mackerals just off El Morro Islands. El Morro is a favorite hang out for Roosters but not all the time. When you can catch it right you got some arm burning action you won´t forget …..

Snappers, Bonito, Mackerals, Barracuda, Pompano, there are plenty of fish to choose from…. Roosters seem to be coming up around Noon so keep this in mind when heading out….

Yellowfin Tuna and Sailfish are still hanging out at Yelapa, the bad news is you will just go crazy when they ignore your bait.

Here´s the deal in the bay, Whales chase fish away, those looking to fish and see whales, it can happen, probably won´t. Whales are eating their butts off out there on these tiny Sardines every thing species wise if also feeding on. Fish see whales in the area, they have a tendency to get this silly thought that they may be lunch if they hang around. So whales and fishing are kinda like oil and vinegar. They can mix, but they will seperate shortly….. Same goes for Manta Rays, they just scare fish.

I have not heard a report from Punta Mita, there may well be Dorado, Sails and Roosters in the area as would be normal for this time of the year off the point.. Now Dorado is a little iffy, but there you are….

For the last couple of days at the Islands there have been so many boats in the area it has been chasing the fish down as you would expect, I already mentioned this. But it´s the bone head captains on the boats around you that are causing the fishing problems. They are basically chasing their tails and the birds. Bait ball come to the surface, Birds show up, then it´s like a race to get to the boil before the other guy… Then when they all get there, if there is a Hook-Up, the next thing you know you have a panga between you and your fish.. NOT COOL BUCKWHEAT! My clients lost two Roosters because of this today! Now imagine you paid a thousand dollars and some bone head captain does the same thing. This is what flaring tempers are all about, getting your ass kicked by some guy who figures you owe him a thousand dollars for choping his line when he had his bucket list fish … I have heard of people getting shot for things like this. Now if you´re near El Morro, hang in one location, watch the ¨chasers¨ chase as you wait for the fish to come up… do some jigging and be patient, it will pay off …..

Well that was today… Yesterday was the same… We´ll see about tomorrow… Thanks for reading!

More to come so Stay Tuned…. Remember my weeky fishing report, just updated, is on my web site now… www.masterbaiters.com.mx … this is for the daily stuff and what ever else would be appropriate.

For the last few days, I should say weeks we have had all sorts of great game fish all over the bay and the islands but getting them to take a bait was impossible. Its not hard to imagine that with the amount of ¨Whale Food¨ in the water, which happens to be these thumb nail sized Sardines which they are loving to death right now….

I can´t exactly say that this has all changed, but I will say the Rooster fish that have been giving us fits for the last couple of weeks are FINALLY TAKING BAITS! Pictured below are pictures of just some of the fish boated today around and outside of the Marietta Islands, an eight hour trip. Roosters in the 45 to 60lb range, Snappers int he 30 lb range, Pompano in the 15 lb range and there were even Sailfish. But don´t get excited they also ignored the baits presented to them as well….. so not everyt hing has changed amgios.

Surprisingly there are 100 lb Yellowfin Tuna now in the Yelapa area, Sailfish all over the place as well… won´t take a bait for love or money. If you want to go there and experience the daily frustration, then have a good time. T his is so strange that I have never seen Yellowfin this large in the bay. So it looks like with a little luck things could be loosening up at least a little.

Yesterday there were strange warm winds and to me it said there was literally change in the air. Warm currents from who knows where have found the Marietta and El Morro islands. It has to be coming from Hawaii because anything comind down from the north is cold, cold, cooooold! Now I can´t tell you why t oday was different from the previous days but I do know this, if you are in PV and you want to boat some nice sized, fierce Gamefish, now would be a good time to dip into the piggy bank or your wifes wallet and grab that untouched credit limit… Just remember I am a two time divorcee and I may not be the best person for adive when it comes to the fair sex. So when you tell your wife ¨But Stan Said it OK to do this¨ remember this. It´s always cheaper to keep her! Believe me…

With a favorable moon faze and sunny warm days I expect things will be getting a little better. Winter fishing is here so take advantage of this ¨Indian Summer¨ for now…..

Take care and Stay tuned….

Last week it was all about Red Tides, Dirty water, Cold water, Too much bait the size of rice and fish that won`t take a bait if you paid them.

Last week it was all about Red Tides, Dirty water, Cold water, Too much bait the size of rice and fish that won`t take a bait if you paid them. In a word the fishing was ¨Crap¨! But we all know when things get bad, they won`t be bad for long. The Red Tide is filtering out of the bay as warmer currents come back into the bay of Banderas. Now this doesn`t mean the fishing has improved much, but we´ll take what we get right now.

Yellowfin Tuna Footballs are still all over the Bay of Banderas, but….. they won´t pay attention to anything you are presenting bait wise. Same goes for Sailfish believe it or not. Just yesterday I had clients at Yelapa, there were many Sailfish sightings and in fact one of those sightings we placed a Google Eye perfectly in front of a Sail and it was worse than my daughter when it comes to peas, I mean they wouldn´t even look at the bait… and there you are! But if you are in the Legal Zone off the Tres Maria Islands, then there are Yellowfin Tuna of all sizes and I mean all sizes. Anywhere from 30 lbs up to 200 lbs is possible and will be for the fanatics all winter long. The picture below was taken in the dark with my cell phone, so thats the reason for the low quality of the picture, but hey we can live with it… got the point across… As you can see they are in the 75 lb range hanging and the bottom of the boat is full of 20 to 35lb footballs…You want these, they´re 85 miles in one direction! It´s a long day, but for the guy dead set on Tuna, well Are U Up 4 it?

Pecositas Panga, Capt. Torta and First Mate Fleco, Tres Maria Islands

Marietta Islands hav e improved a bit, warmer currents have attracted some Dorado to the reefs, but don´t get too excited, only a few have been coming in…. Rooster fish are still around the reefs, but get them to take a bait and you´ll be superman…. Snappers are picking up and should continue to do so. We also boated another Milk fish the other day. We always have Milk fish, but they almost never come up to take bait, but when they do, look out!

Jack Crevalls, Sierra Mackerals are still the main players in the bay. Snappers by the rocks and there is always the chance of Snook or Robalo in Spanish near the river mouths.

Corbeteña is still being neglected and I more than understand. If you are on a Safari looking for what ever you can get, you money would be better spent for the same time to the Marietta Islands. Yet there is the possibility of Yellowfin to 200 lbs, Striped Marlin to 300 lbs, Cubera Snappers off the Rock in the structure…. Even some Dorado if you find a warmer current which is where the Marlin and Tuna will be. We´ve seen Marlin, but not may. Tough call, but for my money I would head out to the Tres Maria´s if you positively have to have a YF Tuna amigo….

We´re seeing warmer currents, the dirty water is turning into a thing of the past. It looks like conditions are improving… Stay tuned!

My blog is now a situational, sorta daily thing to keep the locals appraised of up to the minute condition and action… if you are looking for a full and complete report go to my web site: www.masterbaiters.com.mx and you´ll find it on the home page at the top. Rooster fish are all over the place but getting one to pay attention to your bait is the problem. It´s not that there have not been any Roosters caught, I am showing pictures of them with clients, it´s just that getting one is not easy.

Fishing in Puerto Vallarta, Unpredictable, Frustrating, Fluctuating Bite, It´s Nuts out there?

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & T ackle

Hello Everyone…. Lately the fishing conditions have been less than desirable. We have seen red tide, dirty water the color of coffee with cream, cold water and just tons of these tiny, tiny Sardines by the billions! I mean these Sardinas as they are called in Mexico are the size of your thumb nail and they look like clouds in the water when you see them. Which you would think is a good thing and it is, that is unless you are targeting Rooster fish and they won´t pay attention to anything but these Sardinas. Rooster fish are all over the place but getting one to pay attention to your bait is the problem. It´s not that there have not been any Roosters caught, I am showing pictures of them with clients, it´s just that getting one is not easy. I have been monitoring the bite, of Roosters that is and have been seeing all sorts of strange behaviors. One day the bite is in the morning, the next day the bite doesn´t happen for Roosters until after four in the afternoon. Then there is the chance there may not be a bite at all. When you´re in the business I am in, clients want you to assure them they are going to catch fish. So when you tell them what the deal is, many don´t step up to the plate. If you´re the kind of person who under stands what the word means, and will have a great time on the water if you boat a fish or not, then you are the type I am writing this brief article for. For if you are going to blow a gasket with these conditions, then maybe you´d be better of golfing, losing your balls and not your mind!

Pat Wrenski on Magnifico, 8hrs, Marietta Islands

As we enter winter fishing we normally see Jack Crevalls in much larger numbers and this has not been the case. I should say until today that changed. Jacks are all over the Marietta Islands and off the inner point of Cabo Corrientes. They are hitting just about anything you put in front of them and for now that is good enough.

Sierra Mackerals have taken over the bay and are running on the small side, about two to ten pounds. They are everywhere and they are biting, good for younglings but let’s face it we don´t spend hundreds of dollars to catch something that doesn´t qualify as bait.

Corbeteña, just forget about it unless you´re a gluten for punishment and have more time and money than common sense. Still, there is about a 30% chance you´ll come in with a Striped Marlin, the Blue and Black marlin are long gone. With the arrival of Striped Marlin we all know that the Summer fishing has been pronounced DOA!

Today, most who went out came in with lots of Jack Crevalls. I mean the least I have seen today was eight. Magnifico with Pat Wrzenski who boated these nice Jacks and released 13 more. So the action is picking up and the conditions seem to be improving for the moment… Stay tuned!

One thing that has changed, the dirty water off the point near El Faro or the Light House in English is the water is almost, not quite blue. Now this is a good thing, blue water = more fish, Bigger fish and a better possibility for more species.

Soon we´ll see more Snappers or Pargo in Spanish, Pompano, Amber Jacks and who knows what else…

For my 38 or so readers, My blog is going to turn into a situational and dock report for what is happening on a daily basis about three times a week for those who want to ¨feel¨ the pulse of fishing in Vallarta. If you would like to read my more envolved / Detailed reports you can find them on my web page at: www.masterbaiters.com.mx

That is the latest and the greatest as of today.

My web page guy tells me I am ¨spamming¨ myself and it is hurting my rankings with the search engines. Yet I still want to keep the blog. So book mark my web page, I will be linking to my blog from my site. You can also go to the web page and ¨Like¨ me by clicking the link to my facebook company site.

Written by Stan Gabruk of Master Baiter ´s Sportfishing and Tackle

Well HERE WE ARE AGAIN, me in front of my computer in Marina Vallarta looking out over the Yachts and Sportfishers trying to figure out how to explain what is happening out there, it comes down to two words: Mother Nature. Yes, she is in control as we see the La Nina effects bring winter fishing early to our World Famous Fishing Grounds of Puerto Vallarta. With fields of bait balls of Krill sized Squids, Shrimps and Tiny Sardines, basically Whale food,( the main reason they come to our bay to breed and play) fish are still hanging out in this abundant environment. The bite is a moving target with plenty of Yellowfin Tuna Footballs near Yelapa to be found, getting them to pay attention to your baits is another thing. Marlin, Tuna, Dorado, Sailfish in the deep water locations, we have it all. So hang tight, this useful information coming at you.

12 08 2011 Joe and Wife, Baruk, 8 hrs, Marietta Islands

Ok, the action at El Banco is less than spectacular. My friend Ray took friends and family out to El Banco and boated a few 40 lb YF Footballs, no Marlin sighting and water temperatures were downright cold at 72 in some of the colder currents. And this is my only input from El Banco?!

Corbeteña is still alive with one again, off again action. It is iffy and if you are at the rock you have a decent shot at a smaller Black Marlin in the 250 lb range. Cubera Snapper are there as well around the 50lb range. Dorado running 45 lbs, Sailfish in the 100 inch size, Yellowfin Tuna can be anywhere from 60 to 150 lbs. The water is blue, but cool and the only reason any of these warm water species are still hanging in the area is the abundance of bait in the waiter. If you are thinking of hitting the rock looking for Billfish you better get out there while you still have a shot at these finned fantasies.

The Tres Maria Islands are alive with 250lb Yellowfin Monsters, but the islands have gotten tight with their regulations. The Tres Marias are prison Islands where they have been put ting these captured cartel guys. I head a few prisoners had jumped the island and were floating out to sea. Now a fishing boat can easily be an escape boat in their eyes quite easily. So if you are heading out this way, keep your Sh-t straight and stay the 15 miles off the island, even if t here are boils closer in. You wouldn´t want to be stuck and thrown in with the general population amigos. Ask Capt. Steven Torres (Anna Maria) who was quiet about being thrown in with these prisoners (with clients on board) as he pushed the envelope too many times. They shaved his head and held him for close to a week…. Many of those Bloody Decks type who think they are going to push the envelope learned that day to keep their envelope pushing somewhere else! Just like the Maximus the Bloody Decks boys push, same situation, no insurance, no fishing licenses, the permit they had to fish the islands were bogus and after the third time being warned, they finally got the idea. Or did they, they are pushing it again. So you´ve been warned…..

The islands are the place to be. El Morro to the Marietta Islands are alive with action of the Rooster Fish variety, right now! Running anywhere from 20 to 50 lbs, there arm breakers will not disappoint those looking for some light tackle action. Any shinny bait, poppers, Google eyes, these all are working well and will guarantee many hook-ups. All you need is eight hours and a fast Super Panga for this day on the water amigos! The Marietta Islands come with a little more action in the form of Sailfish, Snappers, Bonito, Dorado, Jack Crevalls, Sierra Mackerals, and the list goes on. For your fishing buck this area is your best bet .

12 06 2011 Joel, 6 hrs, Yellowfin, Bella Del Mar

Punta Mita is still producing Dorado, but much smaller and less abundant. Sailfish are still about ten miles off the point and a little north of the Sayulita. If you are fishing out of La Cruz this may be worth your time and effort.

The bay is still producing fish or all sorts, Sierra Mackerals have taken over the bay and are everywhere you will be. So you don´t really have to hunt for these speckled beauties that are normally in the 10 to 20 lb range. They taste great and are wonderful for younger anglers. If you are looking for the Football Yellowfin Tuna, then you need to be patient amigo. With the full moon we saw the bite erratic in the mornings and stronger in the afternoon. Remember there is no reason you can`t take a Super Panga out in the afternoon and catch the late bite amigos, especially now when it is the best time to fish! Remember I have a Super Panga with a head for privacy for the ladies. The Footballs are there, no trouble finding them, but with all the whale food in the bay they are chowing down on this Krill and if you are running smaller squid baits, then you have a shot. My suggestion, if you want some morning action, be out of the Marina before 6 a.m.. You may find the bit e has ended before 11 a.m. For short times on the water you want to keep up with what the bite is like or you may just find yourself missing it completely.

Now that we hav e seen some very cold currents moving into the area we have officially moved into winter fishing and all that entails. The Yellowfin will only be around for a few more weeks at most. The Black Marlin are barely there as it is. We should be seeing more Striped Marlin, but then again who knows. They like cooler water, so the conditions are rite for them. With water temperatures at 72 degrees we seldom see cooler temperatures than that here. So it will be in teresting to watch and see if they dip any further, which is very possible. So keep an eye on the bite, the water temperatures and what is coming in on the docks. The fishing is great if you know the facts amigo….

While you are in town don`t forget to visit Marina Vallarta with the ¨other Malicon¨ in Puerto Vallarta! It`s the second most popular tourist attraction in Puerto Vallarta with Restaurant row and 150 shops of all kinds… I´ll keep an eye out for you!

Until next time, don´t forget to kiss your fish!

No wonder with the amount of bait in the bay. The bite has moved closer to mid day as you would expect at this time of the month.
As we continue to move deeper into early winter we see the fishing conditions changing as colder water takes over our world famous fishing grounds. But this does not mean we are seeing the fishing go south as well as we see the bay explode with large football sized Yellowfin Tuna which continues to be primary player for short trip anglers. No wonder with the amount of bait in the bay. The bite has moved closer to mid day as you would expect at this time of the month. Deep water locations of El Banco and Corbeteña see fewer anglers as Marlin and Yellowfin move out gradually. Yep, things are changing but if you don´t need to boat a fish over 100 lbs, then you are in for a great day at a more affordable price.

Yellowfin Foot ball Tuna, left at 6 back by 10, Yelapa, Bella Del Mar, Capt. Pepe

Normally at this time of the year the water temperatures are still warm so we normally have Large Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna, but with the La Nina Conditions we experiencing in back to back years, this is not the case this year, again. I am not saying you won´t find large fish at El Banco or Corbeteña, I am just giving you a friendly warning that if you have high expectations for these locations, you may just experience the same level of disappointment if you´re looking for Moby Dick amigos! We have seen some strong southern currents and with them comes colder water. Now there are other things that will come with the colder currents as well, bait for one thing. We are seeing very large Squids in the 40lb range at Corbeteña so as you can imagine there are still some Yellowfin Tuna at the rock. Now they may be forty pounds or they may be 120 lbs, it just depends on the draw. Marlin are still hanging around the rock, but they are getting smaller by the day if you are lucky enough to find one! Sailfish who like water a touch cooler are still swarming, but you don´t need to hit the rock to find Sails amigos. Cubera Snappers are large and worth the time and money if you are a mind to head out this way. Remember to keep in mind the local bait! If you are lucky enough to boat a Yellowfin Tuna, check the stomach and see what they`re feeding on, simple tricks from the old timers can save your day, so remember the basics when fishing! Squid, Krill shrimps and squids (whale food), Sardines and more have moved into the area. For those who just have to have a Marlin before they go home, the best place at the moment is the area between El Morro and Corbeteña. For some reason there are warm areas around this area and with the bait being as abundant as it is, there are plenty of reasons for these finned fantasies to hang around.

Update: 12/06/2011, well as I sent this article off to press things as you may expect changed for the better at El Banco and Corbeteña. Now the Marlin are still MIA (missing in action) for some unknown reason, but Yellowfin Turned up out of nowhere and are thick around the perimeter of the high spots. The water is clear and clean green, water temps are hovering in the 78 degree range (normal would be 82 degrees) and the Yellowfin Tuna are running anywhere from 60 to over 200 lbs right now! You may expect these Yellowfin (YF) Tuna to be chasing Krill and Sardines like in the bay, but in fact they are hitting bullet Bonitos, another of t heir favorites to feed on! If you are here in Vallarta and you have been looking for Yellowfin Tuna Action, then you better hit it while it´s hot or this will be another ¨You should have been here yesterday¨ story. While there give the Cubera Snappers a shot around the drop off (jigging) the high spots, you may find it surprising!

The Marietta Islands have exploded after a less than exciting summer. Rooster fish ranging from 20 to 70lb s are back being their aggressive selves. Dorado are here as well, yet we don´t seem to see much demand for Dorado unless it´s in the bay and close to Marina Vallarta. Snappers are turning up in the area as well in the 15 to 40 lb range. Don`t forget about the Jack Crevalls, Bonito, Skip Jacks, Sierra Mackerals and the list goes on. For the guy looking t o get some action and still keep some bucks in his back pocket, this is the best bang for your ¨Blue Water Fishing¨ excursions. Leave by 7a.m. and get back before the wife knows you`re MIA! Update 12/6/2011: Roosterfish have surrounded the Marietta Islands and have taken the area hostage! You need 8 hrs, but the action starts when you drop a line amigos. Don´t go there if you are looking to shoot the breeze and drink beer, you will only have moments between between strikes! They are running from small to ¨My God¨ sized… or 25 to 70 lbs. You may want to bring something larger than a Baitmaster casting reel and pole on this trip…. For you ¨Fly Guys¨ nothing under a 10 wt please! Snappers are here as well, with Jack Crevalls, Pompano, Bonito, Sierra Mackerals, and more. It´s OK to dip into that Xmas cash if you don´t abuse it too badly… tell you r wife I said it was OK!

Punta Mita is still smoking with Dorado in the mid size range of about 30 lbs up. Sailfish are still about ten miles off the point and of course the Rooster Fish have surged in both numbers and size. Nothing complicated here, just cast a silver diamond jig, popper or Rapalla and anything is likely to happen. If you are targeting Dorado, go here! Update 12/06/2011: Ok, Rooster Fish have taken over here as well and you get the extra benefit of Dorado in the area as well. Sailfish are still ten miles or so off the points with plenty of bait in the water to keep their attention.

As we move into the holiday season like we are now we see the ¨fishing client¨ change from the guy who wants Moby Dick to the guy who just wants a short day where he or she can catch something they can eat that night for dinner. We all understand that for sure and if you are this person then we have the fishing trip for you. Yellowfin Tuna Footballs anywhere from 20 t o 60 lbs have set up camp for the last few weeks and with more and more Krill and Sardines moving into the bay there does not seem to be much of a reason for them to be moving out. Now we know this is not going to last forever, no matter how much bait is in the water so if you are a mind to, get your lucky butt out there and take advantage of something that is kinda unusual.

The Bite update 12/06/2011: Well the bite has changed and if you are out there thinking the bite is in the morning, then you got stung with bad timing. From the time I wrote this report to now, the bite moved from early to early afternoon around 1 to 2 O´clock. We have seen some days were the Footballs were just think, you could walk across them, yet they did not take any baits. It could be we don´t have anything to offer them that gets their attention, or you missed the bite. Remember, if you are going out for a short day, you have to know when the bite is happening or you may find yourself in the right place at the wrong time… sounds like my last marriage.

Bait: Bait, bait and more bait … there are bait balls the size of simi-trucks of three inch Sardinas as they call them here… Whale food, but smaller fish appreciate them as well. Bullet Bonito are around the deep water locations, drawing in the larger Yellowfins as I discussed earlier. Krill are still in the bay, probably the biggest reason the footballs are lingering by Yelapa. So keep an eye on what the local bait is and mimic it if you find the Google Eyes are not working. Always good to have bait in the water!
