The days continue to be warm and the nights are pleasant with light breezes and tropical surroundings. People are coming back slowly as cold weather patterns in the States nudge people into escaping for a short while. With the values at the hotels and around the city, Marina Vallarta has never been a better value. Those interested in Puerto Vallarta Sportfishing still have a chance to hook into a finned fantasy like a Marlin or Yellowfin Tuna. Sailfish, Dorado and even Wahoo are available to those with a full day to spend on the sapphire blue waters in our world famous fishing grounds. Remember ¨tomorrows have a habit of turning into ¨I should have yesterday when I could have(s) ¨. For those who do decide to take advantage of our Big Game fishing, Corbeteña right now is the place to be. Everything is just percolating out there. With plenty of bait in the water, you’ll find birds diving into huge bait balls like Kamikazes. As you pull up to a bait ball like this, the action can be intense, and everyone has their part. As you look out over the water, you see the Yellowfin Tuna hurling themselves through the center of this boil like missiles! Then you hear the reels as they scream for attention. You get the harness on, and you’re in the game. Other Players include Blue and Striped Marlin (275 lbs), Sailfish (80 inches), Dorado (30-50 lbs), Wahoo (40 – 65 lbs), Cubera Snapper (35-65 lbs) and the list goes on. Live bait is king right now, but remember you’ll have big Yellowfin hit hoochies as well, don’ be afraid to mix things up a little. Put yourself in the picture and live a little amigos! Marietta Islands are alive with the invasion of Jack Crevalls, Toro’s, Mackerals, Dorado, Sailfish and Needle fish to name a few. Of course this is a very flexible location and with some warm water there is always the outside chance of a Striped Marlin. It’s a great place to head out to, especially with those not willing to spend ten hours on a boat. Oh, buy the way, I have a new panga that is heading out to the Marietta Islands for $250.00 usd, two people comfortable, and three max. So there really is no reason to let the chance at some great sport fishing pass you by. Even less expensive for shorter durations. You may even see a whale out there! The shore lines from Cabo Corrientes to Punta Mita all have potential. Lots of Spanish Mackerals have moved into the area, in the middle of the bay you’ll find Jack Crevalls. River mouths have Snook and the structure and rocky areas have snapper. Be careful though, the baby Manta Rays will eat baits bouncing off the sandy bottoms around here! North of Punta Mita is still keeping anglers in action. Rooster fish the last couple of weeks have turned up at the Sayulita area and hopefully will hand around for a while. We were looking for these guys all summer, they had other ideas I guess. North of the point from ten to twenty five miles is one of those areas that will always guarantee results. Dorado and Sailfish are the main players here, but Striped and Blue Marlin will be in the deeper water. If you’re in the La Cruz Marina, this is a close and valid option for small dinero amigos! Remember I have an online store now at: http://www.MasterBaitersGear.com.mx I only have two styles for now, but if it has a decent response, I will increase the product line. Maybe get into serious tackle, stay tuned. Until Next week, don´t for get to kiss your fish. Everyone in this day and age is familiar with the Banking System. We use our ATM’s, Pay Pal and of course other financial instruments designed to make our life easier, and financially safe. But who protects us from the Banking System?
To truly understand the banking system, you first need to know where it came from and what it´s purpose was in the beginning. Now most of us know banks have been around since Jessee James, but those were different creatures, not even closely related to what we have today.
One of the largest Earth Quakes in the History of the United States was the Great San Francisco Earth Quake or 1906. Most people weren´t alive when this happened, but the Bank of American was born in that disaster. You see, the Federal Govt. and the State of California had no money to rebuild the city. You see financial institutions were always looked at like loan sharks. The sell you money, they take interest and drive prices up with artificial prices based on speculation. The old stories how the bank was going to repossess the farm and kick aunt Martha off here land, forgotten and forsaken. This was the image banks had gotten in the public eye, in the press and on the different medias available at the time. Remember, there was no television in 1906.
Remember, this is a country at the time on the gold standard. As long as gold was the financial foundation of the United States, the dollar had to be stable. But, this tragedy had almost every man, woman and child homeless and without shelter. The only building left standing was the Mark Hopkins Hotel standing straight and proud on the top of the hill in San Francisco. Normally the view was spectacular, but this day was like looking at Mt. Saint Helen’s the day after the volcano erupted! Injured people, no medical care, the Mark Hopkins was turned into a hospital. The situation was dire, the city and government officials had serious problems and turned to a group of wealthy individuals for help. No need to go into names…. These individuals formed the Bank of America, one of the most famous and long-lived names in the banking industry. Special laws were written where the Bank of America could assign debt, basically make loans, and collect interest on that debt which would be controlled and regulated so people would not have the bankers take advantage of individuals when they were down…. Eventually the city was rebuilt and Bank of America was in the middle of positive perceptions and was given more and more leeway as the years went by.
Fast forward now to the present where we are no longer on the gold standard so the international community can afford the products from the United States. International banking and commerce becomes a daily issue in the press on in all medias. What the DOW was doing, what the interest rates are, how strong is the Dollar, all these things were daily items in the minds of the ¨home trader¨and his Charles Schwabb account. It seems that everyone in the states became a day trader. Everyone was a speculator.
Along the way there have been depressions, Black Fridays, four more market crashes, Junk Bonds, Enron, a thousand other disasters in the financial markets and still, the day traders speculated. Just like they speculate oil, Electricity, Currencies and anything else you can buy on the open market. Speculation unchecked is dangerous, but the present-day markets are a bordello of illicit financial transactions and opportunities and nothing has changed. Greed has gone wild, transparency is as clear as mud, special interest groups get what they want and the politicians are all pointing fingers in everyone elses direction, but not in theirs. After all, they weren´t the ones who caused the problem… or are they?
With the frustration factor attached to the global economy because our elected officials, influenced by the special interest, I think of it as being bribed, all looked the other way when it came to present market conditions or were simply in a position to repay the special interest guys for campaign contributions or ??
Now we could blame Bush and most do for this financial melt down. I will say he did nothing to stop this, but you have to give Bush some breathing room, after all, he wasn´t able to make a sentence with more than six works long when he was first in office. He was just oblivious to the whole thing and being a less govt. sort, the banks were safe and free to give my dog a guaranteed credit limit of $25,000.00 usd, all she had to do was put her paw print on the form and it would have been a done deal! The whole idea of risk and risk management disappeared when the sleeping public never heard from it´s news services like CNN, CNBC, and others how Congress and the Senate had changed the law so the unsuspecting individual could not file bankruptcy on unsecured debt. This is because they are not journalist, they are television companies owned by soap manufacturers or appliance makers influencing what you hear and see so they can continue to sell advertising space… basically these entertainment corporations, Walter Cronkite would flip if he was directed to present the news today! But I´m off subject.
So the Banking Industry now had the ability to give credit cards, houses, cars, business loans and more to our college students, unqualified people with no income, and home owners. Home owners, the holy grail of Banking yet has no social responsibility, none. They can issue cards to anyone they want, even those who they think will not be able to pay their debts. Imagine that, no risk, can’t get out of paying through bankruptcy, they used to call these people ¨Loan Sharks¨. You know, the guys who would break your legs if you didn´t pay them back with the ¨vig¨or interest compounding daily. Now things are done with a little more subtlety, but still the same process, only now they have suits and not over coats.
Recently it came out that the Bail-Out was over paid and Pres. Obama wants to take the overage, if you can call two hundred billion overage… and ¨Spend out way out of the recession¨. OK, I thought the money was to get the bad loans and the foreclosed homes back in line and keep people in their homes. Anyone seen any of this??
Hitler, now there’s a name that will get your attention, was in the same situation as Pres. Obama… The banks would not loosen the grip on the national monies, they were of a certain religion that he didn´t care for anyway, so Hitler went out and eventually got money moving in Germany. They financed the second world war and believe it or not, pulled the world out of the depression. We all know the story of WWII ….
One thing the United States always had going for it was it´s wealth, it´s people and it´s clear and distinct transparency so anyone could see how and were the money went and what was coming in. Now, this has all changed. With the open check book, when questioned where the ¨TARP¨ money went, they all shake their heads and point fingers.
Now we hear that these banks and brokerage firms are paying back the money they received, even though they never did anything with it except prop up it´s bad loan divisions which are now ghost companies on some other banks bottom line. Smoke and Mirrors amigos… Now you can see these very same people showing commercials about how safe and rock solid they are… What?? Credit card companies looking to screw clients have introduced all sorts of fines for things like over chargers, late payments, even no usage of the card comes with a fee or fine if you ask me….
So, where do we go… Well, I don´t know. But I had a friend tell me the other day that if two hundred billion was spent, it would pay off every loan in America, not just the bad loans, all the loans! So why is the bailout seven hundred billion dollars of invisible stimulus activities?
If Govt. took the seven hundred billion dollars and gave that money to the general public, this would be a done deal by now. The general public knows where they need to spend money, what bills need paying, and what medical bills they have. Imagine if every american over the age of fifty got a million dollars. Now they have to quit, can´t work. They would have to buy a car, a few appliances, and take a trip. They would not have to pay taxes on this money and the trickle down effect is in place. It can’t do anything but help. We don’t have the politicians still making bad decisions based on their pocket-book and perceptions of what the american people need. After all, 80% of those in the Senate and Congress are millionaires. Not exactly govt. by the people, but govt. by lawyers is more like it… What did Shakespeare have to say about attorneys again…. Hmmmm, can someone help me here?
The bottom line here is: I am tired of huge Stock Market Disasters, I am tired of being told we need to cut back more and lower our standard of living just to have what I worked so hard for, taken in the name of bad banking and bad govt. Frankly, if there was no extended banking, the general public would be forced to deal in real world values, not artificially inflated prices paid for with your money on their credit cards…..
I want to be able to look at my daughter and know her life will be a little better for her than mine, but I can´t do that…. I want to think I will be able to go to a doctor in the states when I get old….. well older if I need some serious medical attention without having to go to India to be able to afford an operation. I want a new car every four years, a two-week vacation every year, an affordable house where the wife can stay home and nurture the children of the family so they aren´t strangers with Uzis when they turn 13!
In short, I want to see some level of sanity return to the daily lifes of Americans who have lost touch with the American Dream. We need to demand our elected officials stay away from lobbiest, and listen to their constituents. We need real world people in Govt, not some guy that has been there for thirty years telling people he isn´t to blame for this mess, when he is. We need to turn the television to CSPAN and see what your govt is doing to you, not for you. We all need to start paying attention and using our vote to get back what we have lost. Everything todays generations have, came from the previous generation who returned from WWII hell-bent on making the world a better place. After coming close to dieing in the war, most Americans had a different, ¨building¨ attitude if you will. Today, we’ve regressed to living of the mis fortune of others and we don´t care as long as we got our… screw everyone else. Well America was not founded on these principles and I for one wouldn’t want to see what we have as a situation turn into our Great grandchildren problems. Lets be adults, lets set the markets and politicians straight….. Run for office, vote, write articles, left or right, write….. Get involved, it’s time for common sense to speak up and demand accountability, intelligence, and compassion. This is the United States.. Not China… Get our factories back in the states and let’s get Communist ¨Allies¨ finances back in their pockets and stop allowing China to put itself in a position of superiority….. That’s my opinion, I may be wrong, but there you are….. Stan
Time To Break That Fuel Piggy Bank, Corbeteña Has It All Right Now!
Here in my office on the Malicon or Board Walk in Marina Vallarta, I see and hear pretty much about everything under the sun. This past week the Docks have been alive with action with Sailfish and Dorado plentiful in local fishing grounds like the Marietta Islands. But the story this week, once more is Corbeteña. You name it, it is there waiting for you! Hopefully you’ve been stashing that extra change so you can give some of the best fishing in the season a shot. This has been the strange season for sure and there is no reason for things to get sane now. Water currents change so fast Terrafin can’t keep up with the changes in water temperatures. From day to day the fluctuation can be as much as ten degrees. Now in water temperatures, this is huge. It´s like a cake batter that is being mixed. When you put the chocolate in the white batter, the swirls would represent hot and cold water. Same thing. So satellite readings can change in a heartbeat. Would you like to swim in ice water? That’s the strange news, the great news is there are fish in our world famous fishing grounds. When it comes to Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta we have become patient and look for opportunities that spring up in other areas. If you’re looking for Billfish, El Banco has been doing well with Sailfish and Dorado. Not too much when you’re looking for Striped or Blue Marlin. With plenty of bait in the water, the absence of larger numbers indicates cool water temperatures are taking their toll. Right now I wouldn´t hit the bank unless you hear of some changes…. Or call me at the shop and I’ll fill you in on the latest and greatest…. Corbeteña, the famous and reliable Rock as we call it is living up to its reputation. For some reason water temperatures have been holding which is bringing fish and keeping fish in the area. This means if you’re targeting Yellowfin Tuna, this is the only place you´ll find any of size. Hopefully you´ve been putting away your nickels and dimes for these conditions. We knew they were coming sooner or later. With Yellowfin in the 40 to 160 lb range, mostly in the larger size categories. Even the Bonito are running in the 40 lb range. Lots and lots of bullets or baby Bonito as well. So as you can expect, Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin of all species, Dorado, Sailfish, Cubera Snapper, all sorts of runners, Jack Crevalls, Wahoo, you name it, it will be in the area. Recently Marlin and Sails have been hitting kite baits as well, so even if you’re seeing Yellowfin, anything can happen. Blue Water and smooth seas have been the norm so don´t miss out on this hot spot in some of the worlds best known fishing grounds. Marietta Islands have been automatic for the last week. Sailfish, a few Rooster fish, Jack Crevalls, Dorado, larger Bonito and the list goes on. The nice thing about this area is its proximity. A 8 hr day in a Super Panga will run you $175.00 usd with Master Baiters. For about the same as a round of golf, you can get four people taking the shot of a lifetime at a Sailfish or some other finned fantasy. With plenty of bait in the area and perfect conditions all around the bay, this is a favorite among tourist of all ages. North of Punta Mita has shown some more signs of life and this will continue into the winter months. Sailfish and Dorado are the main players in this area. Eight hours will do the job, but to be on the safe side, I suggest ten hour trips. You´ll have a shot at Striped Marlin. This area can get hot when everywhere else cools off. The bay has been wonderful lately. Near the Los Arcos area the Bonita are thick. If you’re looking for smaller fish, thirty five pounds to us are smaller fish. You’re in luck if you stay closer to shore. If you head out as little as five miles, you may just fish you’ve got a sailfish on the end of your line. With Roballo moving back in to this area, a four hour day again has some nice appeal! Well worth the money just to get out where the whales are! Master Baiter´s®, I should say we are now selling our world famous T-Shirts online at http://www.MasterBaitersGear.com … We only have two designs up for the time being, but if things go well, we’ll increase the products offered. Erratic Currents, Erratic Fishing, Yellowfin / Sailfish at Corbeteña!
It’s getting hard to keep up with what the currents are doing these days. As it has happened for eons, the currents change from a summer flow to the north, to a winter flow to the south. This can turn into an interesting time of the year for fishing. You have cold water fish like Whales, Bottle Nose Dolphin, and Jack Crevalls moving into the area. Yet the water is still warm enough at the deep water locations like Corbeteña and El Banco to still have Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin hanging out. But if the current is chilly, you won’t see Charlie, the Tuna that is…
Corbeteña and El Banco were opposites this week. El Banco was sporting cooler water, below 80 degrees some days, above on other days. Currents are raking up the muck and you could run into some unexpected dirty water. If you hit a ¨warm day¨ you might boat a Yellowfin Tuna or a Marlin. Cold day, forget about it! You can use those Terrafin readouts or NOAH sites, but the real deal is what is happening there, at the bank, at that moment. Currents are changing so fast, those are now worth a lick… A good plan would be to head to El Banco, five the high spots a shot, check the water conditions. If it’s not working, head towards Corbeteña trolling. Pay attention to those expensive electronics and GPS the ridges, where upwelling currents can be. Many a tournament winning fish came from between El Banco and Corbeteña. Keep that one to yourself, wouldn’t want everyone out there!
Corbeteña now, the water has been a little more consistent there. Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin (Striped Marlin mostly) have been plentiful and hungry. Cooler waters have the Cubera Snapper (aka Pargo in Spanish) action picking up. So don’t be afraid of a little bottom fishing. Cubera have been running in the 45 lb range. The sails around 80 inches in length, Dorado have been in and out, but they´ve been between 35 to 50 lbs on average, with some trophy sized beauties in the mix. The Yellowfin have been running 40 to 75 lbs, not monsters by any stretch of the imagination, but certainly arm killers! Rainbow Runners, Green Runners, Wahoo and more are here for the taking. Just keep in mind the currents and have a backup plan.
One place you can always fall back on is the Marietta Islands. 28 miles out from Marina Vallarta, the Marietta Islands are very well known as fish city. This area always has something for the vacationing angler. Right now larger Sailfish are plentiful from a mile to ten miles out (to the north). Jack Crevalls have started to move into the area and they´re running in the 35 to 45lb range. If you´ve never caught a Jack Crevalls, you owe it to yourself to try one of these on. Fierce fighters that will put light tackle to the test. Fly guys love them, light tackle guys will be impressed! Dorado is also here in the 25 lb range, large Bonito in the 35 to 45 lb range have been around the rocky areas. Well worth the fuel dollar. But plan on 8 hrs, you wouldn´t want to cramp your day…
Now El Morro, just a few short Kilometers out from the Marietta Islands will many times be ignored, which is not smart for the guy looking for action. On those days when the currents get active, like now, El Morro on the south side has a sloping area under water that creates upwelling’s that bait fish love. In turn, you´ll see gamefish looking for an open buffet of their favorite dishes! Rooster fish will many times be hanging out there in big numbers. Of course Sailfish and Dorado is no stranger to this area. So don´t forget to give it some respect as you’re in the area.
North of Punta Mita is turning into what we have seen for the last several years. Sailfish and Mahi Mahi will linger in these areas twenty miles north of the point. It´s a ten hour day at best, but it’s a worthwhile trip. Many Striped and Blue Marlin have been seen and caught this past week in this area. Between this area and Corbeteña, I’d say we’re coming into the time of year where they could be a tossup as to where to go. I hope you have a lucky coin to flip….
The bay has been active, but not as active as the last couple weeks. Around Boca de Tomatlan there have been Roballo or Sea Bass in large numbers just a kilometer off the rocks and shore line. Light tackle heaven for those short on time or budget. Snapper, Bonita, smaller Jack Crevalls are here as well. Don´t forget about the Snook, yes they´re out there!
Master Baiter´s, I should say we are now selling our world famous T-Shirts online at www.MasterBaitersGear.com … We only have two designs up for the time being, but if things go well, we’ll increase the products offered. Well that’s about it for now, until next week, don’t forget to kiss your fish!
It seems, again, that he moment I finished my last report, everything changed, again. If you´re looking for Yellowfin Tuna this week, well you may be bald headed by now from the pure frustration of changing conditions, water temperatures and sea conditions in general. The frustrating thing is you know the fish are out there, you see them jumping and they’re in fish heaven. It all comes down to luck, skill and a well equipped boat.
I know you’ve heard me say a thousand times a cheap boat can be the most expensive thing you spend your vacation dollar on when you come back empty handed and others have full fish boxes. You saved money at the expense of catching that finned fantasy. Again, this week the boat with kites, a spectrum of lure colors and sizes, and fast boats that burn fuel was the secret. At El Banco, making bait has been good and bad. Some days good, other days bad. So making bait when you can is very important right now. If you know there are fish where you’re heading out to and you can’t make bait, that is frustration factor No. 1. Those forced to use lures had fair luck. Petrileros, lures with purple or Green this week was working well. Google Eyes are a staple for bait and they were working most of the time. But those who could get Chorras or small Bonito were getting strikes. Using Kites this week were working on more than YellowfinTuna. Sailfish and Marlin were striking these suspended baits. But the inside scoop here is not the fish, but what they’ve been eating.
With the Whales returning to the area, they come here for the small bait in the water. Small guppies like fish, krill shrimp, and small fish in general, these are what whales eat and filter through their grill in their mouth called baleen. The problem is that Yellowfin will feed, Dorado also, on these baits until they can’t eat any more, then eat more! So like my friend J.J. Says, Elephants eat peanuts also. So running a planer with some hoochies or squid baits have a shot at getting you a Yellowfin in the 60 lb range at El Banco, maybe even a dorado. Those shooting for larger fish like Marlin and Sailfish, even Yellowfin will want to use larger baits and be prepared with lots of lures with plenty of color! But alas, this week At El Banco was work at best. Worth the time and effort if you arrive for the early or late bites. Otherwise other places like Corbeteña would be a better option.
Speaking of Corbeteña or the ¨Rock¨ has been very active this week. With all the current and water temperature changes Corbeteña is you most flexible destination. Sailfish, Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin of all types, Snapper (Cubera or Pargo in Spanish) are just a few that you can almost always depend on here. Although not all of these normally happen at the same time. With Good eating Rainbow runners, green and blue runners, Amber Jacks and a host of others, you will almost always come back with something for the dinner table! So don’t let that Captain tell you they taste bad, when they’re wonderful! There have even been some Wahoo caught off the south end of the rock trolling lures off the rock finger that extends under water there. This area is always worth the money. If you hit el Banco and nothing is happening, take your time trolling to Corbeteña, lots of hot spots between the two locations that produce tournament winning fish, but get ignored by in the box thinking captains. You don´t have to be on automatic amigos… break the pattern!
The Marietta Islands, like always is a great place for the angler short on vacation budget. If you´re on the south side of El Morro, you can always depend on catching something. With the currents and they up well there, there is always plenty of food to attract fish. Rooster fish especially love this area, so don´t forget about it and only hit the Marietta islands! The whole area this past week has been producing Sailfish to 120 inches, Dorado in the 25 lb range, even a few Striped Marlin a mile or so off the rocks towards the north. Jack Crevalls, Amber Jacks and a host of other fish call this area home and like to just ¨Hang out¨ ….
North of Punta Mita is still a great place and if you´re fourteen miles off the point at a setting of 310, you’re in the recent hot spot. Not far from El Banco, but closer to shore, you´ll find perfect conditions exist for Sailfish, Blue and Striped Marlin, Mahi if you find a log or some floating piece of something they can hang around. Still need at least ten hours, but it’s an option and we all need those!
Inside the bay, things are a little better with Dorado all over the southern end of the bay around Los Arcos to Cabo Correntes point. In fact Cabo Corrientes has had some great action if you´re lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time. But with the bite that way it has been, I could say that about all the fishing grounds this week. So keep your ears to the wind and call me for the most recent developments when it comes to conditions and catches.
Until Next week, don´t for get to kiss your fish.
