Commercialized Gamefish? Billfish now R Fair Game, Sportfishing loses!

For those of you out there who are interested in Catching a Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado or other gamefish, there is a real problem arising and it is serious. It appears that there is a bill in front of the Mexican Congress / Senate to allow these fish to fall under the commericalization rule, which of course means the commercial fish companies can do the same thing to these species as they presently do to Yellowfin Tuna. It has been proven that a GameFish like a marlin brings in $10,000 dollars per fish when you consider the trickle down effects to hotels, tours, restaurants, shopping and the other related tourism that follows the Sportfishermans quest for gamefish.

I asked the question to my friend Roby Wade who is working to stop this in Cabo San Lucas along with Minerva from Minervas sportfishing in Cabo. Below is the answer I got in return to my question of what she was talking about in here emails, this is the answer to what commercialization means to business owners and fisherman alike… Below is her answer… Scarey!

The commercialization of dorado (not sportfishing) as well as all the species exclusively destined for sportfishing have been proposed in two separate initiatives which have been presented before the House of Representatives by the representative from Sonora named Leon Perea.  These initiatives are currently in the CAMARA DE DIPUTADOS (House of Representatives) and awaiting the vote. Once the House has voted on these it will pass to the SENATE where the senate will vote and either approve or return.  If the initiatives manage to get through the Senate approved, the initiatives are then are sent to the President of Mexico and then published in the DIARIO OFICIAL DE LA FEDERACION.  If this happens, we are doomed because then the commercial fishing permits will be enough for the bearer to commercialize all 6 species exclusively destined for sportfishing which include our precious dorado and billfish.

Dorado and Sailfish Moving Into the Area, Football Yellowfin Tuna at El Banco / Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta

Dorado and Sailfish Moving Into the Area, Football Yellowfin Tuna at El Banco / Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta

As spring marches along, we find the Dorado have started to make a return to the area. Both El Banco and Corbeteña have seen slow as late but hopefully this will change very soon. Yellowfin Tuna Footballs are around the high spots as well which means it can´t be long before there are Billfish chasing them down! Puerto Vallarta Sportfishing is on the rise! Like I just mentioned, El Banco and Corbeteña are finally showing signs of life when it comes to Dorado. Running in the range of 25 to 45 lbs, these beauties have been hitting Google Eyes, and lures. The Yellowfin Tune, footballs in the 20 to 35 lb range are boiling around the high spots, but as late, with the full moon conditions have not been taking baits. Remember, they will bite before sun up and at sun down during the full moon phase. By the time you read this article this condition will change, it just takes a day or two, and I predict El Banco and Corbeteña will be the place to be shortly. Stay tuned! Oh, there have been a lot of squids in the water, so if you´re heading out for Yellowfin Tuna, get your insurance at the local marked and have squid for chum or bait! This could make the difference in your thousand dollars plus day! For those of you interested in keeping up with the Wahoo bite, well they´re biting at El Banco. Not may, mostly sparse, but if you are heading out this way make sure you have wire leaders and cable in your lures. Remember, Wahoo are not a schooling fish and will be an incidental catch. It is hard to know when to target Wahoo because they are not like other fish. You mainly catch these fish by accident when they miss the vital parts of the lure or bait and somehow hook themselves on Mono line… Remember, know your fish, several captains will tell you these fish are bad eating, but they are the best you will ever have! So if it looks kinda like a Barracuda, it’s probably a Wahoo! In between El Morro and the Marietta Islands remains the hot spot for three weeks running now. I put clients out on an 8 hour trip and they hooked into more than thirty fish. Amber Jacks to 35 lbs, Snappers at 15 lbs, Needle fish, Bonito 25 lbs, Pompano, and the list goes on. Rooster fish are in the area, but they have been ignoring baits, but still worth a try, it won’t remain like this for long. Still your best bet for catching fish and keeping an eye on your fuel or vacation dollar! Anywhere in the bay is worth going right now. With Punta Mita coming back to life with smaller Dorado and the area just south inside the bay near the surf line is Rooster Heaven! Jack Crevalls, Rooster fish, Needle fish, Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna, and the list goes on. Four hours is worthwhile and you will catch fish. Six hours gives you more time to find fish and the eight hour trip will get you to the islands. So you don´t need to hunt for Moby Dick, unless you are looking for Billfish or Yellowfin Tuna! I have a friend in Cabo who is involved in the uphill battle of fish conservation in Mexico. There is a Mexican bill in front of the congress that would make Dorado, Sailfish, Marlin, and Sailfish fair game for commercial fishing companies in Mexico and possibly other countries as well…. This is the letter I got from my friend to describe what is presently happening. Below is the answer I got for the question of what this commercialization bill meant, below is the answer. Behind the Scenes, Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta, Changes Coming!

Special Article:

Behind the Scenes, Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta, Changes Coming!

People come to Marina Vallarta all the time and tell me they had no clue the Marina was ¨Here¨ even though it is only a few hundred yards away from the Marriot Casa Magna Hotel, Westin Hotel, Mayan Palace Hotel, Melia Hotel, Embarcadero Hotel and Velas Hotel! That’s right, the hotels don’t clue people in and they think the ¨Marina¨ is the Cruise Ship area! I guess I can’t blame them, as you turn into the Marina and head towards the hotels on Paseo De La Marina, you will not see one boat, no mast, no water, just condos that line the Marina like a golf course is surrounded by condos. So visitors for up to ten or more years will one day discover the Marina just a day or so before they leave for home again. You see there is no real promotion of the Marina. With more people walking around the Marina there would be more traffic and hence more opportunities to offer fishing trips to clients, sell shirts, etc. The hotels don´t want to promote Marina Vallarta because they are not interested in having hotel clients confronted by time share guys or have the client realize they can eat in Restaurant Row in Marina Vallarta! Expensive Yachts, Restaurants, shops, Dentist, Real Estate (lots of that), Hair Salons, Massage Spa’s, sports bars, you name it!

Another reason Marina Vallarta is not as well known as it should be, being in the top ten private marinas in the world(!), the company that owns the marina is broke… It´s the same corporate mix up, one company owns this company, even though the original company set up the lower company that went bankrupt. So the original company is now at the end of the twenty year lease period. Actually this period ended two plus years ago and the docks, boats and people have been hanging for years on when or what was going to happen.

Previous attempts to auction off the marina failed due to the mind numbing fact that the people handling the sale would only open the books for five days prior to the auction. So to put this in perspective, they cooked the books, like you would expect, they don´t want to allow anyone to dig too deeply into the numbers, then want it to be a sealed bid auction. I had a group of investors and this one person told me that for five thousand dollars I would be given the number for the winning bid and would be able to steal the auction! Sounds kinda shady, but you may consider an offer like this using an American mind. I came back with an offer of fifteen thousand dollars after we won the bid, never heard from those people again. After all, they were going to sell my high bid to all the either investors as well, again and again….. This is how you get screwed in Mexico, by actually thinking you know something, is when you learn you don’t!

So they are now going to give this auction thing another try. I’ve heard those in the know expect it to go for six million dollars. I hear other rumors the federal govt. of Mexico wants who ever winds up with Marina Vallarta to put in twenty two million dollars, not pesos, in upgrades and improvements. This may all be positioning by rumor or it could be accurate. But I know this, you or I should say they, will never know all the details until the deal is over. But there are some obvious changes coming that anglers, boat owners or vacationing fisherman will not like, .. Increased cost for everything to start with. That’s right folks, sooner than later we will see the entire complexion of the Marina Change.

For one thing, Marina Vallarta needs a lot of attention. Docks are rotting out from under your feet. Electricity meters are nonexistent, yet your electric bill is 300 bucks a month! Now water meter or readings, but your water bill is 250 bucks a month. Dock owners pay a maintenance fee of thousands of dollars that seem to vanish into thin air. There is no cable service, Internet service for Yachts, poor electrical conditions and hook up, most yachts run on generator power! Yet we are a protected, Hurricane Resistant Marina, one of the best private marinas in the world! So these conditions are coming to an end.

I have several friends who are heading up a group who will make an offer on the Marina. Now these guys are not doing this to be a nice guy or save Marina Vallarta. They plan on ultimately charging Cabo San Lucas rates or three thousand dollars a month for a fifty foot or so dock! You take the average charter boat owner who will have to either purchase his dock or lease his dock will see a drastic rise in his monthly and daily expenses!

Dock prices go for about 500 to 1000 bucks each month, larger slips going for more of course. Now imagine you’re paying 500 bucks a month for your super panga slip….  Now it´s 2,000 bucks, plus water and electricity?! If this super panga goes out twenty times, he has to raise his prices $75 dollars just to cover his new expense! Twenty times for most is unrealistic. Most hope to go out ten times a month, and that would be $150 dollars this boat has to kick its price up to break even in his pocket. This makes a normal $275 dollar, eight hour trip to $425. If the poor boat owner wants to make any money for his pocket, he has to pack this price to pay for his family, home, normal stuff like you and me! Tack on inflation and hopefully everyone improves their standard of living, then you are looking probably more of a super panga price of $525 for eight hours. That is close to double the original price before the pending sale at $275. If you draw parallels between pangas and larger boats like a 32 ft Luhrs Express for example. You are now looking a bigger boat, naturally this means more expensive boat, more expensive cost of operation, Insurance, Fuel, maintenance and the list is as long as your arm. I am sure you can see where this is going.

But there is a scary trend in Marina Ownership, and that is commission sales. Those I have talked with want to control all the Sportfishing that comes in and out of the Marina. Those operating a charter business could find himself in a situation where he will need to pay the Marina a commission on all money generating fishing trips, etc. This is a business twist that many say will never fly, but when you own the docks, you make the conditions.  Cabo conditions are going to spread amigos, this is just the latest scare to the fishing charter business up and down the coast and beyond.

If we are lucky, they will not change that drastically, but when was luck your best friend?  This will make you think and it seems I am the only person bringing up the subject for discussion. The sale of Marina Vallarta will affect anyone and everyone doing any sort of on the water type business. With the inherent business nature of Sportfishing expenses, customers already thinking Sportfishing is way too expensive will be cut out of the loop in PV. One interesting issue we have in Puerto Vallarta is we need to go twenty five miles just to get out of the bay! This is a daily and hard run on motors. Nothing like Cabo San Lucas where once you are out of the Marina, you´re dropping lines five miles out! Hell these boats never break an idle. Price wise, comparatively speaking, most Good Quality Companies will run you 800 to 1000 dollars for a full day of fishing to Corbeteña (35 miles out) or El Banco (50 miles out). Cabo for an 8 hr day will run you more money on smaller boats (31 ft Bertrams mostly) for comparison. Big difference when you´re looking at money coming out of your pocket. You can only imagine the differences in the fuel cost to run fifty miles at top speed or five miles on idle…..

Lately with the press harping swine flu and now screaming how the sky is still falling in Mexico and to stay out, people are realizing it is not like this at all in central Mexico. No comparisons to the USA, but they are too obvious for those researching recent events in Mexico, all of Mexico when talking about cities like Detroit, Chicago, New York, ….. Another thing the press is forgetting to mention is that the number of deaths in Mexico, drug related, has steadily declined since 1997 and are now down by 30 percent over that time frame. So the news they are broadcasting on the news services like CNN calling it the Blood Bath In Mexico is less than accurate. Now how does this affect us in PV? Well, like the swine flu, it is all centered in one location along the border. So be safe, don´t go there! Go anywhere else it strikes your fancy!

Back to the issue, the reports of recent news events is killing the ability of businesses, not just Sportfishing, ability to earn a living, stay in business and feed their families! Down town is a ghost town to its previous self. Hotels are moderately full, but even a 30 depression is serious for a location like Puerto Vallarta where 100% occupancy for the last ten years has fueled the timeshare industry! Mexico is looking at diminished tourism in the summer, so if you are looking for a deal and still want to go fishing, I would suggest looking at August time frame, there will be plenty of fish and lots of discounts being thrown around. This is the real opportunity, but it won’t last into next year!

The los Penas Marina is changing also. The international laws now state that all commercial on the water companies must be five hundred feet from Cruise ships. Well, the Los Penas Marina, the original Marina Vallarta is slated to be upgraded and reworked heavily. The Booze Tours, Snorkeling, Whale Watching, and more trips will be leaving from this area. Maybe even fishing charters, no telling at the moment. I kinda think this would be a good idea to have a public dock where fish can be cleaned and no pick-up or drop-off issues. May be a good thing, who knows? But this is another factor that could affect Sportfishing companies.

I hear the Marina is supposed to go up on the Auction Block sometime in June, but this will be a moving target and will probably change several times. With the La Cruz Marina being smart and promoting itself nicely, I am just waiting for the day there are some people walking around the place to open a shop there. Nuevo Vallarta marina has no fuel dock and is mostly for Sail Boats, but things can change and they are only fifteen minutes from Marina Vallarta by boat. Right now the owner of the Nuevo Marina is not allowing the operation of charter boats from that Marina except for the boats he personally owns. There is also talk of other marinas in Barra Navidad or Manzanillo, all rumors to me at this point, but may be solid plans….

What will happen remains to be seen, but this is the present situation OF Marina Vallarta and no matter how things turn out, one thing is for sure, everything is going to continue to get more expensive.

My suggestion would be to hit PV and get fishing before it gets too expensive and reaches the Cabo rates soon. One this is a fact, Sportfishing, Big Game Fishing, Deep Sea Fishing, whatever you want to call it, it has never been cheap and never will be. Just make sure you spend your hard earned vacation or Big Game Fishing funds wisely ……

That’s all for now, Until next time don’t forget to kiss your fish!

Bloody Decks Taliban Attacks On My Character, Saddle Spur

Last September I posted an article on Bloody decks as the low rent site, I should say ¨no rent?  public forum site where anyone with a computer and an opinion can post slandarous comments with an agenda.  There are like twelve of them or so and every one has been lobing verbal grenades at me on Bloody Decks, this is the Taliban I speak of.  And if I actually took to heart their comments, my feeling would be hurt. But of course I have no clue who these guys or gals are, never met them, never want to. But they know me… for some reason, they know and care about what I do and print for some reason…. oh ya, there’s that agenda again…..

I noticed they took my blog article, posted it online, added information and links to their cronies, ignored to copy and paste parts they wanted ignored. Then proceeded rant and rave about what a bad guy I am as they used their adjusted article to validate the rants. I didn´t know fishing was so harmful to your self esteem. I mean I should just commit suidice and put myself out of my misory….  or maybe they should just move on…

But you know, I kinda like myself and for a group of people so focused in  group oriented, concentrated laser beam negative energy blast at me is amazing. I mean I am surprised they would even care about what I HAD TO SAY?! Why these types  spend so much time reacting to my little out of the way blog like they do is comical.

Those that read th BD site, personal friends, come in the shop and tell me how this guy or that guy is just going off on me again, most people see these guys for what they are….  But, they are all not idiots,  readers tune in to see the photos and read post. Others trash talk, I guess it’s like an Enquirer sort of fascination to  laugh about how someone got dised or slandared… it’s like a gut chuckle or the Jerry Springer show of fishing….. that is the way i see it…. people loved that show also..

Bloody Decks is actually an interesting site if you stay away from the Puerto Vallarta Section. Even the guys who started the site let go of  Josh Temple, the driving force behind the site. He has moved on to bigger and better things than Bloody Decks. Now those in the Bloody Decks Taliban will use this comment, like they have in the past to act like Johsh Hates me or as some example of how i am trying to blow smoke or something that would supoort their agenda…. . But there was a Puerto Vallarta fishing scene long before just a few years ago when the site went up.

If you are looking for accurate, professional, intelligent fishing information there are lots of  local area resources to visit. www.BandaresNews.com for example has several people posting local fishing reports without mostly naked women and foul language or subject matters. I’ll tell you, if my twelve year old was on this site, I would worry about the content my son or daughter was reading.

Another site is Western Outdoor News, possible the largest online and established fishing site online: www.won.com Well worth the time to bookmark it…

Lots of fishing reports on Puerto Vallarta available on www.WorldWideFishing.com they have more guides and articles on the subject of fishing, all over the world than you could sit and read!

Fishing Forums like www.InTheBite.com are great for local information where everyday guys post fishing articles from personal experience as well as charter company / captains articles….. Josh is on Sportfishingmag.com and there is Marlin mag online as well with many, many other professional contributors.  But you won’t find simi nude women on these sites, sorry. Your twelve year old would be better served to visit thes locations instead.

When Bloody Decks name is mentioned in the same sentences as the names above, then I will begin to take them seriously as well.

Master Baiter´s has been here in Marina Vallarta for a long time and I will continue to be here for many years to come. Things are changing in Vallarta, the Marina will be up for sale soon and the complexion of Marina will change. Slips will get more and more expensive, like Cabo.  Cabo’s average slip is near or above $3000.00 usd a month right now with no end in site for prices. Tourism is also down in Cabo as in Puerto Vallarta, in some cases down by 70%.  The charter companies that made it through last years Swine Flu Debacle may not make it through this years endless assault on Mexico in the media. Fuel prices are going up along with insurance, dock maintenace fees,  diminishing fish counts and anything else associated with working a boat in Mexico.  I have friends who are in the bidding process for the Marina tell me they will charge all charter boats  a service charge per trip and this may ultimately happen, this is a common thought amongst the bidders.  After watching three sound companies go belly up this past year, it surprises me that there are new comers to replace the sound companies that failed.  Boats are for sale, others are being purchased cheap, but  people are not here in Mexico like we would expect in a normal  year.  Coming in after a dead year, last yeare, these are the real issues in Marina Vallarta.  I would like to see some of the BD members address these issues or maybe they have. Take a look at the dwindeling dolphin population and the scarey projections for what is down the line…. Seiners.. another issue, long liners, lots of things need attention in Vallarta.

Check out the sites I mentioned and get a better perspective of what is happening in the world of sportfishing and not just a limited view of what is happening in Puerto Vallarta ….

First Early Season Marlin boated, Water Temps Normal, Bay Fishing Explodes!

First Early Season Marlin boated, Water Temps Normal, Bay Fishing Explodes!

 Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta

Like the title says, we saw our first early season Blue Marlin the other day and it was in the 500 lb range. Caught at Corbeteña, it is starting to look like there may be some new life at Corbeteña. Sailfish are also moving into the area as well, there is plenty of bait in the water, it looks like the planets are beginning to align (hopefully) and we may see the beginning of a normal fishing season! Keep your fingers crossed.

As I mentioned briefly, water temperatures are dropping into normal levels of 70 to 76 degrees. With Spring and Easter comes the current changes which may indicate the end of El Nino, Happy Days! The next question is: What about La Nina, the opposite of El Nino. La Nina is when the water chills to abnormally low temperatures which of course creates its own challenges ( More NOAA info on La Nina at: http://www.elnino.noaa.gov/lanina.html or http://www.publicaffairs.noaa.gov/lanina.html ). This happens about twenty five percent of the time immediately following El Nino. This is the sort of information you will want to know if planning a Yellowfin Tuna fishing trip this summer when considering your budget, time and determination. No Worries amigos, we always have very large Gamefish, but you may have to be flexibly minded!

Yellowfin Tuna to 140 lbs and more are in the general area between El Banco and the Tres Maria Islands, a.k.a Prison Islands. For the last couple of years this area has been the only implied guarantee for Yellowfin Tuna. The trip tips the distance at close to eighty miles one way. This is for the guy(s) that want a Yellowfin at all cost. And for the season, YF Tuna in the area is a true treat for those with the time and the money. So if you are one of the few interested in giving this Safari a shot, let me know! With Bait abundant, El Banco will soon be showing more signs of life in the Marlin Dept. So keep an eye open for them and be prepared with teasers, flying Gaffs, and Soft head lures, the basics!

El Morro, the reefs and the Marietta Islands are still producing Jack Crevalls averaging in the 40 lb range and will tear your light tackle arms off. One client spent an hour bringing in one of these forty pound Jacks. Another hooked into twenty fish in the first hour of an Eight hour day. Rooster fish are bordering 50 lbs, Bonito are 35 lbs or larger (bait for Rooster Fish). Fair sized Snapper at 35 lbs, Sierra Mackerals, and lots more to choose from. Without a doubt, you will come in with fish!

Inshore fishing to the center of the bay is just boiling with bait, Crashing Birds and Jack Crevalls, Rooster Fish, Bonito and Skip Jack Tuna. Rooster fish are striking larger baits like Bonito in the bay as well. Silver lures cast in boils will result with a sudden rush of adrenalin!

Some strangely good news this week was the Mexican Navy were performing some sort of exercise out near El Banco and this has kept the Seiners or Production Tuna Fleets at bay, so a day or two more. So that’s a good thing. Also remember not to get too close to the Marietta Islands amigos. Ten miles out is as close as they will stomach…. If you are even that close you can expect a gun boat to come pay you a visit and it won’t be a social invitation for drinks! You can get permits for this area, but it is work and most think they can skirt this requirement and get away with something. So have fun and be smart!

There is a site anyone who is thinking of visiting Mexico should read. It will clear up the hysteria the press is spreading about Mexico, drug wars and Americans safety… The recent travel warning from Americans is only until April 12, just after the highest part of Mexico’s Tourism season…

Remember, if you are a local or if you are coming to town, my online T.V. fishing program needs you. If interested, we will head out with you, film your day professionally, you’ll be the subject of our show and get a copy of the finished program to show your friends and keep as a souvenir of your day.

Help protect the Vallarta Sportfishing Industry by using your powers as a consumer to inform the world of the great or not so great day you had and why on www dot PuertoVallarta dot net and go into the Forum section. This gets the attention of visitors and gives them some heads up info. If you like your company, say good stuff, if not, tell the world why you could have had a better day only if….. It’s a good way to help your favorite captain build his business through word of mouth advertising.

Remember to support the local advertisers and this publication by spreading the word that you saw them in the PV Mirror.

Until next week, don’t forget to kiss your fish….

Bloody Decks Taliban Strikes Again, Thanks For Your Support!

Bloody Decks Taliban Strikes Again, Thanks For Your Support!

Recently I wrote a little article on my almost invisible little blog about the web site Bloody Decks and how a public forum like that is uncontrolled and unmoderated. This of  course allows anyone with an opinion (especially a toxic one)  and a computer to go out and slander any one they, the ¨Bloody Decks Taliban¨ deems unworthy as they look down on mere mortals that want to post a nice article about the fishing trip they had in Puerto Vallarta.

Like in the terrorist countries, the Bloody Decks Taliban sits ¨On High¨ giving thumbs up or thumbs down on who is reputable and who is not reputable. Of course this little click of friends, about twelve in all, only write to support their cronies. Well not being one of the cronies, I am an outsider, therefore deserving of the wrath of the Bloody Decks Taliban!

Now my invisible blog,  some how or another was discovered by the Bloody Decks Taliban the other day and  I had 179 people read my little blog that day! The Next day I had 210 people read my article on Bloody Decks as the low rent site it is.  That is more in two days than I HAVE HAD TOTAL ALL LAST YEAR!

I Stopped reading the crap this site puts up but that doesn’t stop people from coming over to me and joking with me about how ¨They’re all jumping on me in their articles comments¨ again.  But like I said, they all have a renewed interest in me, so maybe you should check out this site and see first hand the wrath of the ¨Bloody Decks Taliban¨ and how they kill their unworthy competition with slander and lies….  Remember, if the only way you can look good is by pointing a finger at he top of your lungs, attempting to look good by comparison instead of going out and focusing on your own achievements, you will always put yourself behind the leader, making you little more than a follower with an agenda and a toxic opinion!

Well I have only one thing to say about this and previous coordinated attacts and that is;  THANK YOU FOR MAKING Master Baiter´s AND ME SO POPULAR! I’M FLATTERED!  And laughing all the way to the bank.  Hahahahahahahaha……
