Summer Like Weather, Warm Currents, Wahoo at Corbeteña

Summer Like Weather, Warm Currents, Wahoo at Corbeteña

Written by Stan Gabruk

Summer time fishing conditions have made fishing a real dream at the Marietta Islands, Dorado running 25 to 35 lbs are still hanging in the warm currents. Water temperatures are still in the mid seventies with blue water conditions everywhere reachable in a day…. Snappers in the 30 lb range are more abundant daily. Rooster fish are still here, but for some reason have slowed down. You may come in empty handed if targeting Roosters, but the Jack Crevalls will more than make up for their absence. Skip Jack Tuna in the 30 lb range, Even Needle fish are taking baits in this cooler than normal water for this species. www.masterbaiters.com.mx Dorado

The full moon has been doing its job and the Yellowfin Tuna at Corbeteña and El Banco are taking baits, not a problem there, but their size seems to be diminishing by the day. For now Yellowfin Tuna are running in the 60 lb range, not in the 150 lb range like last week.  Again, It´s been a full moon the last few days and that of course means super early bites and late afternoon bite for YF Tuna. Not a bad thing unless you don´t want to get up early or your wife doesn´t want you out too late, those dinner reservations with friends are fish day killers! Wahoo have been in the area and are running 80 lbs. Most captains have not been running wire leaders and have essentially got lucky to hook-em perfectly. With razor teeth they can cut even wire leaders that are too thin. Dorado still in the warm currents, but smaller at 25 lbs. Striped Marlin in the 125 to 275 lb range, they do like cooler water and this is perfect conditions for them. Cubera Snappers Jigging in the 50 lb range and the list just goes on. Great fishing at Corbeteña and El Banco…07 07 2012 Corbetená, Andelé, Large YFTuna onDeck www.masterbaiters.com.mx

The Marietta Islands are still producing like a fish machine, this will continue through the winter so get used to it. Skip Jack Tuna, Bonito, Needle fish, Dorado in the 25 lb range. Snappers to 25 lbs, Rooster fish are in and mostly out for now, but they chase bait so we´ll wait to see what happens… like we have a choice. Eight hours right now is a great value for the money. Mikes Fishing 8 hr fishing party for solo fisherman is your best value at $175.00 usd. We can fix you up, just let us know. But stay away from these super cheap pangas with no radio. Remember a boat with no radio is dangerous and a cell phone cannot call an S.O.S. if you´re sinking. Besides, you can´t hear the other captains for where to find fish! Don’t let a cheap boat risk what can´t be replaced! I mean really, what are they going to do call the wife to  send someone out to save you from  a sinking boat with no radio…please, but it happens every day.

Inside the bay it´s Sierra Mackeral city, running to 35 lbs you will see why these are favorites of light tackle and fly fishing types… Needle fish, also known as false Marlin are strong fighters and will attack a bait that grabs their fancy. Jack Crevalls everywhere and they have an attitude. Jack Crevalls are not fussy fish, they hit anything shinny that swims. So you don´t need much expensive gear, you just need to get out there amigo. Four hour trips in the bay are well worth it if looking for arm burning action for now. Oh, there are still Skippies at Yelapa to close to 40 lbs, but again you can´t do that from the arm chair.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Punta Mita is still showing signs of Sailfish, but they are moving farther north by the day to catch warm currents coming down from baja via Mazatlan. Rooster fish around the Anclote reef, but thinning as well as Sardines become sparse. With plenty of bait to be had like Bullet Bonita and Google Eyes are the primary players regarding bait fish.

Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Seems Like Summer Fishing!

Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Seems Like Summer Fishing!

Written by Stan Gabruk

As we move deeper into winter fishing, we´re seeing species that are normally long gone hanging around and we´re happy for it. Visitors to Puerto Vallarta have fantash fishing options with Dorado at the Marietta Islands, Tuna at El Banco, Corbeteña has Striped Marlin and the bay if just full of fish. Just when you think you´ve have the seasons and species figured out, guess what… It´s fishing!01 17 2013 Magnifico Dorado, Marietta Islands 2

The deep water fishing grounds are still producing nicely even though they really should be so slow you couldn´t find a pulse. About ten miles north of El Banco, large Dolphins are running with Yellowfin Tuna over 150 lbs . They´re hitting Sardines with an attitude. Striped Marlin in the 250 lb range are everywhere as well. Dorado are smaller, but still in the area running 25 to 40 lbs. Jack Crevalls everywhere, Bonito, Cubera Snappers to 60 lb, you may even hook a Sailfish. All and all I can´t remember when El Banco was firing like this, at this time of the year. For the Tuna Fanatics, they´re  calling your name.

Corbeteña is also seeing Yellowfin Tuna, but they´re in the 60 lb range. We won´t complain about this. Striped Marlin, Sails, Jack Crevalls, Bonito, Cubera Snappers. Pretty much the same as El Banco but with smaller Yellowfin Tuna.

The Marietta Islands and off the point of Punta Mita has recharged itself and is living up to its reputation. Rooster fish are still hitting live bait and shinny lures. Running in the 35 to 55 or larger range you´re sure to have some arm burning action. Dorado, yes Dorado are also just off the island which are also running 25 to 35 lbs. Sailfish have also shown up again as well as Punta Mita. Both areas are an eight hour day trip, but if you are in Sayulita or Punta Mita a short day trip off the beach is worth its weight in gold. Red Snappers running 25 to 30 lbs are great tasting and on light tackle are a ton of fun. Skippies, Bonito, Jack Crevalls and the list goes on. Just get there and find out!

Inside the bay is a fantasy for smaller game fish. Sierra Mackerals running in the 30 lb range have been a welcome surprise for sure! Jack Crevalls everywhere, Snappers near structure and of course there are still football Yellowfin Tuna hanging around Yelapa. It´s wonderful in the bay now and four to six hour days work wonders for smaller types…

For now the water temperatures are hovering around 75 degrees, perfect for Striped Marlin and even Sailfish. But the water is clean and blue with tons of Sardines all through the bay and around the islands. Rooster fish seem to be happy where they are so this hopefully will continue. The fishing grounds are also still empty so you couldn´t ask for much more amigos, but of course we always do!

Dorado at Marietta Islands, Jack Crevalls / Rooster Fish Invasion

Dorado at Marietta Islands, Jack Crevalls / Rooster Fish Invasion

Winter has arrived

As we move deeper into winter fishing we find we still have Dorado in the area as water temperatures begin to drop below 80 degrees. Sailfish, Marlin and Yellow fin Tuna are for the most part heading south for the winter. But the Tres Maria Islands are still rockin with Monster Yellowfin. Who says the fun stops when the water temperatures drop?www.masterbaiters.cm.mx 01 17 2013 Magnifico Sierra Mackeral

We all know, or should know by now that just after the New Year’s Holiday the water temperatures drop like a rock and you can set you watch by it. This is why Dorado at the Marietta Islands is such a surprise to me as they´re running in the mid twenty pound range. Red Snappers (25 lbs) are increasing in numbers, but still not a stable as yet. Sierra Mackerals in the 25 lb range are beginning to  take a foot hold in the bay and surrounding areas like the islands. Rooster fish have been hanging in there anywhere from 35 to50 lbs and they´ll hit just about anything. Google eyes are still their favorites though. With plenty of live bait around the Marietta Islands there is plenty of action to be had in an eight hour day. Great action for anyone, but not too stiff for younger anglers on vacation. 01 17 2013 Magnifico Dorado, Marietta Islands

Inside the bay we´re seeing the smaller gamefish pick up again. While still mostly Jack Crevalls and Sierra Mackerals, there are also Skip Jacks in the 25 lb range, Smaller Dorado in the 15 lb range, but throw them back for next year. Snappers around the rocks and structure. Snook can still be found at the river mouths in Nuevo and around Boca Tomatlan. Don´t forget about the surf fishing action, Rooster fish are hitting baits in Nuevo Vallarta. So if you´re in one of those nice hotels cast some iron in front of the resort and see what happens. Yelapa this year has been a machine for fishing and the area is still full of football YF Tuna in the 40 to 50 lb range if you´re lucky. Again live bait is king, Google eyes, blue runners are doing the trick.

Corbeteña and El Banco will be settling down for the rest of the year.  Still there are some great sized Curbera Snappers being boated in the 55 lb range. There are also still some striped Marlin in the area, but kinda scarce as the water temperatures drop. Amber Jacks in the 40 lb range, Jack Crevalls, Football Yellowfin Tuna, Bonito, pretty much the same species as the Marietta Islands.

The area near Punta Mita is still showing action around the reefs at Anclote near Sayulita. Rooster fish as well and if you have the notion up near San Pancho you´ll  find Sailfish, but this is a ten hour day amigos. Hit it while you can here, this will surely change in the next week or so.

As we settle into winter fishing, tourism is picking up so it all balances out I guess. While you won´t be finding any Bucket List fishing at the moment, the action is great. And if you have never felt the pull of a Jack Crevall you´d be surprised how strong a fighter these fish are. Not exactly the blue plate special somehow the Marinaros have found ways to make then taste great. So give them to the crew, they´ll thank you for them.

Marietta Islands Explode With 50 lb Rooster Fish

Marietta Islands Explode With 50 lb Rooster Fish

Written by Stan Gabruk

Well if you´ve been reading my recent articles I mentioned several weeks how the champagne days of fishing were coming to an end. They aren´t dead yet, but the indicators for cold water have arrived with the Jack Crevalls and Sierra Mackerals. Change is in the currents amigos and winter fishing is knocking on the door. But fear not, we still have Yellowfin Tuna and plenty of bait, but say good bye to Cow Country!

Rooster fish to 50 lbs or larger at the Marietta Islands

Rooster fish to 50 lbs or larger at the Marietta Islands

You can go back years and find how Jack Crevalls and Sierra Mackerals are the first players or indicators that cold currents are beginning to arrive and they´re right on time. Now you may say what does this mean to me, Joe Tourist and my fishing options. Well it means shorter days, lower cost, arm burning action on light tackle and guaranteed smiles. Most stop hunting Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna shortly after the New Year because you can set your watch normally by the currents changing just one day after New Year’s Day! That means everything is on time.

At the Marietta Islands, Rooster Fish have moved in like an army of bad tempered tourist that just had to deal with the timeshare gauntlet at the airport. What´s more, they´re running 50 lbs and they´ll hit anything that is shinny! You don´t have to get fancy with these fish, just get something, they´ll hit your car keys with a hook! Dorado are thinning out quickly and those finding these gold and blue beauties will be lucky indeed. Short season this year for Dorado and they never really hit the sizes we are used to. Something to think about. Sailfish are fewer and farther between, more seasonal indicators. From now until June you can expect this condition to continue. But the Rooster fish are temperamental, they can be here for months, then BAM, they´re gone. Hit it while you can amigos and you´ll be out there mostly alone. Snappers, Skip jack tuna, Arctic Bonito and a host of other players on any given day.

Corbetena is seeing Yellowfin Tuna Footballs running with Spinner Dolphin. Come summer these Spinners are welcome sights as they ride the bow wave of warm currents. The opposite is the case come fall, they seem to lag behind to catch what water temps best suite them. Just another indicator as we move into winter fishing. Sailfish are still at the Rock, but this will change rapidly. If you have the time and the inclination, you may still be able to boat this bucket list fish! Wahoo have been boated more or less accidently where the hook hit them perfectly and these are the best tasking fish you´ll find around. They call these fish Ono´s in Hawaii… Cubera Snappers for jiggers, Dorado around 25lbs, again short timers now. Still worth your time and effort, but you better hurry.

Large Jack Crevalls running 40 lbs around the bay

Large Jack Crevalls running 40 lbs around the bay

Striped Marlin have shown up at El Banco, another indicator. They will not be hanging here from long, just a few weeks at best, so again, don´t hesitate, the universe is calling your name. Cubera Snapper, Amber Jacks, Rainbow Runners and Spinners with Football Tuna in the 50 lb range. Still on the small side, but on the fun side as well. Remember everything counts in large amounts amigos. Hit em hard, they taste great when they´re in this range.

Soon we´ll have fields of Red Snappers and Jack Crevalls everywhere. For now we are lucky enough to have the lingering effects of summer as we enter January, a treat indeed. But times are changing so for those looking for short and inexpensive fishing trips can have their way and still catch fish.
