Quickie Report: Hurrican Dora Marches up the west coast of Mexico

The latest and greatest on the storm activity likely to affect Puerto Vallarta is Hurricane Dora….

Dora is moving quickly at about 17 mph and is causing waves on the shoreline. Dora is only 250 or so miles out to sea in the warm water currents. But the projections say once it heads farther north or east, it will most likely peter-out… We have seen this several times already this year, once these tropical storms turned Hurricane head west, they lose gas because of the cooler currents ….

Be prepared to have the port authority close the port.to boats fishing outside of the bay…. If you have an insured boa t, this means if you head out past  the point of the Marietta Islands, and something does happen  then you are S.O.L Amigo….

Inside the bay, no worries, the norther shores will see some wave action, with some good sized waves up to the 12 height possible, most likely in the 6 ft range…..

Friday or saturday at El Banco or  Corbeteña could be the place to be with Hurricanes forcing fish out of it´s path, they will most likely move inward towards shore. So watch the currents and the swell activity before heading out……. Master Baiter Stan…. http://www.masterbaiters.com.mx

Quickly.. Fishing: Yellowfin tuna are from 40 to 200 lbs. Some days in the bay can be better than at  El Banco if looking for action and not size… Dorado are still fickle and the Marlin are ranging from 350 lbs to 650 lbs… just depends.

Dorado in Yelapa, Tuna at Corbeteña and El Banco, Seasonal Rains Begin!

Dorado in Yelapa, Tuna at Corbeteña and El Banco, Seasonal Rains Begin!

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle

As we march into summer and Fishings High season we see that the predictable seasonal rains, down pours would be a better description has all kinds of trees and assorted things running in to the bay of Banderas. The up side is that Dorado are moving into the bay and although they are on the smaller, not tiny side, they are still fun to catch and great to eat! Black and Blue Marlin are around Corbeteña and El Banco, but you may have to work a little for these highly desirable gamefish. Favorable conditions are here in Puerto Vallarta´s world class fishing grounds now. The only thing lacking is YOU!

Dorado at tournament weigh-in

Dorado at tournament weigh-in

We´ve had a lot of local faces show up this week, faces I normally see a little more often here in Marina Vallarta. But we all know we are dealing with the ¨New World¨ when it comes to the financials of our yearly visitors dealing with a wavering economy in North America! Fishing companies are struggling to deal with a lack of interest in those coming to Puerto Vallarta in Deep Sea Fishing for sure. So the catch has been a void of sorts on information in the different locations. This week we have the 5th International Marlin and Tuna Tournament of Riviera Nayarit, just about ten or so  miles north of Puerto Vallarta marina, held in the La Cruz Marina, which of course is the reason we have been seeing more boats at the regular places than normal. So I get reports, but with the tournament coming on people are tight lipped about their strategies…..  For those interested, there are a lot of locations in our fishing grounds that don´t get any attention at all, which should! The area between El Banco and Corbeteña can be a real winner for you who like to participate in the local Puerto Vallarta Tournaments! With all kinds of ridges and valleys, you need to use those expensive electronics to find them and to mark them on your GPS. There are also areas to the south east of Corbeteña where many tournament winners have been produced as well! Off El Banco, five to ten miles, many times there will be no action on the high spots, where everyone fights for position. Many times the area between El Banco and Punta Mita can produce trophy winning Dorado, Sailfish and even Marlin. So when you head out to the fishing grounds, zig when everyone is heading to the same two locations. Also if you are a serious competitor, these large boats that do 30 mph at best are comfortable, but they´re built for comfort, not competition. Fast boats can get where slower and larger boats can only wish they could get to and back before the daily gun at about 5in the afternoon!

If you are looking for Yellowfin Tuna, for the tournament or just to fill your fridge, then one thing you want to bring and keep with you is a kite. Nothing new about kites for sure, but this past week those getting larger Yellowfin Tuna at El Banco and Corbeteña over 125 lbs are using kites. When it comes to Yellowfin Tuna, which is the big draw right now, you better be patient and have a good bag of tricks or in common terms, you better have a great selection of lures. Poppers, Cedar Plugs, Jet heads, Soft head lure, and even live bait of larger and smaller size varieties are all working, but no one thing works more than a couple of times in a day. So change lures, and have a kite rigged with the double trouble swivels so you can run more than two baits amigo… keep this to yourself as always….. It´s out secret.

Sailfih or Pez Vela in Spànish at weigh-in

Sailfih or Pez Vela in Spànish at weigh-in

At Corbeteña Magnifico (our 31ft. Bertram Classic) ran into herds of bait eating Needle fish, commonly called false Marlin, these fish are great fighters and kinda strange looking tubular fish with a small bill. They look kinda like a barracuda with a bill or a balleyhos that was stretched out! Keeping bait away from these Needle fish is hard and when you are targeting larger fish, this will leave you short on bait and scratching your head. So be a little stingy on your bait usage and when you see Needle fish springing up as they will everywhere, run lures on a few lines or move out of the area. Sailfish are still here as are Blue Marlin and Black Marlin the 40 to 600 pound range. Not too abundant, but enough to justify the fuel expense. So keep an eye out for what you are targeting and don´t get stung feeding fish you don´t want your valuable bait! El Banco is the same, sin Needle fish!

The point of Punta Mita is seeing more in the way of Sailfish off the point about seven to twelve miles off the point. More Dorado are moving into the area here as well. Dorado in this area are normally more abundant, so I expect this area to improve quickly…. Or not… who really knows for sure, stay tuned!

The bay is seeing the seasonal rains dump the water into the bay via the streams and rivers. This means there is plenty of organic materials in the bay for the Dorado to eat as the Trash Line(s) become a real factor when fishing in the bay. As normal the organic materials that wash down the hillsides are like a free buffet for smaller fish. And of course this draws larger fish, so look for the line what looks like dirt floating on the water. Cast a diamond jig, or Rapalla in the water about two feet or so in the clean water side and you may find you´ll catch more fish than those heading out to the deep water locations! Needle fish, Sierra Mackerals, Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna and the list goes on are all waiting for you to come out and play! I put a couple of ladies out the other day for four hours and they came in with several nice Dorados for dinner! So remember, the guy looking for huge fish has to head out to the deep water locations, but if you´re looking for some action on smaller but great fighting fish, and then we have all your options covered amigo!

Water Temperatures are perfect, plenty of bait in all the locations you`ll be heading out to makes conditions favorable. But remember, fish move so what you found in one place today, may be completely different tomorrow. So be flexible, have a plan and be ready to improvise and adapt as the day goes by.

Sailfish on El Duende, Happy campers!

Sailfish on El Duende, Happy campers!

For those of you looking to book fishing trip this year remember the warmer it gets the better the fishing is. August is a great time of the year for those who are serious about fishing to come to Puerto Vallarta a for fishing. In fact from Mid July to the second week of January is when you want to plan your fishing trip here if possible. As the weather cools down, the fishing is still great, but to be up front, the really big fish, the ones that go in the record books are caught from the beginning of August to the end of October. I hope that is not too confusing… Hahahaa..

For those interested, the American consulate has not issued any warning about the Jalisco area as being dangerous or having drug cartel problems. Listen to the news for sure, but realize there are a lot of false statements in the North American press, talk with people who have come to Mexico,  you`ll find they all had a good time and no issues! Frankly as I look around the empty fishing grounds, empty hotels and empty Marina, most I talk with tell me these sorts of comments how nobody is in any danger!!! If you have any questions, feel free to con tact me at Master Baiter´s dot com dot mx and I will be happy to answer any questions or concerns, even if you don´t want to go fishing amigos!!

One word of caution: a small stick pointing out from the water may have a giant root ball under it. I have seen dead horses, floating refrigerators, furniture, you name it. I don`t know where it all comes from, but there you are amigos. Running out too early is not always the best idea when you have to go slow so you can avoid these half exposed prop and shaft hazards. Charter boats will be going a touch slower the darker it is in the morning.  So if you want to head out to the deep water locations early, allow for the slowness of the boat time wise….. or just go a little later and go a little faster. For those who want to be at the fishing grounds first thing in the morning, do a over- night, you will sleep under the stars, cook your catch and be there for the bite without having to worry about wiping out the prop in the morning… something to think about amigos!

For those of you thinking of entering our local tournaments from Barra to Manzanillo, Master Baiter’s Captains are the best in Puerto Vallarta with many being multi-tournament winners. We keep our prices down as much as possible for tournaments because we like to be in the action too! So come be part of Team Master Baiter’s and find out for yourself that “We Won’t Jerk You Around!”

Dorado Pick Up, Yellowfin Tuna Footballs Everywhere, Corbetena Comes to Life!

Dorado Pick Up, Yellowfin Tuna Footballs Everywhere, Corbetena Comes to Life!

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle

This week we’ve seen a tropical storm from Cancun head west over land which has created the heavy rain we need in the mountains. With the rain water comes organic materials like leaves, seeds, roots all sorts of things which fish love to feed on. The trash line is the fisherman’s friend and we see the level of fish move up dramatically when we hit this time of the year. Short trips of six to eight hours will put you on Dorado, Football sized Yellowfin Tuna, Bonito, Sierra Mackerels’ and the list goes on. Water temperatures are perfect and the amount of bait in the water is mind blowing. The conditions are perfect as we move into fishing’s High Season here in Puerto Vallarta, Stand by for details….

Dorado, Magnifico, 8hrs, CaboCorrientes, Michelle Crosby caught and photo

Normally when we hit July we know the rainy season is on our door step and we also know that while we may have to deal with Hurricanes passing us by causing rain and sometimes rough seas, we also know this is when the Monster Yellowfin Tuna come home to Puerto Vallarta! Now we are not exactly seeing the Monster Yellowfin Tuna as yet, but we are seeing YF Tuna in the 70 to 85lb range at Corbetena. Not bad when you boat 15 to 20 of these arm burning demons! Corbetena has also seen Dorado Move into the area in the 20 to 35 lb range, but they are moving into places closer in towards the bay and less expensive fuel wise. So no need to head to the rock just for Dorado. Black Marlin are more abundant, with several in the 400 lb range running with the YF Tuna. Conditions for Black Marlin are getting better by the day so theses Gamefish are worth the fuel dollars and we’re lucky they are here. Sailfish are here as well, but the main players for now are the Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin. The water is very blue at both the Rock and El Banco. Both are doing very well for early season fishing. Another main factor in fishing, water temperatures are still hanging in the 84 to 86 degree range and there are plenty of chorras in the water or smaller SkipJack Tuna (Skippies) or Bonito to use as bait. Lures are working well also, but remember classic lures like Cedar Plugs are old technology that still does the trick. When those hundred dollar lures fall short, remember the old reliable, the fish don’t k now they’re not supposed to hit these!  Don’t get caught trying to catch fish amigos. Remember names like Wilkenson, Hi-5, and Cabo name brands as well. They work well and t he price leaves you with more for your buck!

Important to pay attention to the bite, the moon phases right now. I don’t care if you are in the bay or out to El Banco, the bite is happening from about 7:00a.m. To about 11:00 a.m. then things get slow until about 2:00 in the afternoon or so till sundown. Use your time and this information wisely grasshopper!

With the bay on fire with action the few heading out from Marina Vallarta have been coming back with plenty of Football Yellowfin Tuna. Not unusual to see 15 or so 20 to 40 lb Tuna on a boat. Many are heading out to fill the freezer for summer! With good reason, the rains we have talked about in this and past articles have left some dirty water from the hills forming a nice little trash line. But the dirty water is only on the surface as you would expect from mountain rains. There is a lot of bushes, sea weed, logs, just clumps of debris and vegetation where the Football Tuna and Dorado are hanging out. This condition is around the rivers feeding into the bay and farther out. The amount of bait in the bay is insane, surface trolling running poppers is working well also, planers getting Google eyes below the surface dirty water is working. It all works, but you have to be out there to make it all happen.

The Marietta Islands are still producing some Rooster Fish or 30lbs or so off the back side of the islands. They’re have been hanging around but with so many Football Tuna in the bay t he Rooster Fish has faded in the minds of the locals. Same here as just about everywhere around the bay, Football Tuna,  Bonito, Sierra Mackerals, Rooster fish, Smaller Dorado, Needle fish and more. The Marietta islands are a great place to drop a few lines, but with other places firing as well not many heading out to this location.

06 26 2011 Dorado, Magnifico, 8hrs, CaboCorrientes Trash Line

Same goes for Punta Mita, this time of the year there are almost always Sailfish moving in, Dorado love this spot and Sayulita is famous for it’s surprising sized Rooster Fish from shore or Surf Fishing. Magnifico is heading out to check things out and see if we can fill the freezer this week. There are also mature buoys out this way as well, stay tuned we’ll let you know what happens for sure.

Just a reminder, when everyone zigs sometimes it’s good to zag like Magnifico. We know you’re going to catch a bunch of fish around the bay of banderas, why not explore a little in places where others are ignoring. El Morro is one of those places. Cabo Corrientes is always someplace to think about. The River Mouths are perfect for Snook right now and maybe Rooster fish and Dorado…. Everything is perfect for the time being for the Big Gamefish to arrive and they will shortly. A few more weeks and we could explode around here. We are seeing what appears to be close to shore currents this year which make it look like we’ll have a leg up this season and 12 hr days hopefully won’t turn into 16 hr days hunting for Yellowfin Tuna. Keep an eye open and an ear peeled…. For recent news. My blog will have the latest during the week so you can get the latest info there: www.masterbaiters.wordpress.com sign up for notifications of new articles…….

Blue Water, Plenty of Bait, Perfect Water Temps, No Wonder Lots of Fish NOW!

Blue Water, Plenty of Bait, Perfect Water Temps, No Wonder Lots of Fish NOW!

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle

I have been looking at the present conditions and trying to not get too excited about the things I am seeing. From my desk in Marina Vallarta I am on top of things and i see what has been happening with our world famous fishing grounds. One thing that is happening is there is just a ton of bait everywhere in the bay and outside the bay! Water temperatures are hovering in the 82 to 84 degree mark which is perfect for Yellowfin Tuna and Black Marlin. Skip Jack Tuna as a bait is everywhere. Some are in the twenty pound range, others are bullets. But the size of the bait is not important, what is important is there are fish to be caught and you don’t need to spend a fortune right now to have the time of your life!

Lets start with the deep water locations of El Banco or The Bank in English and Corbetena. Yellowfin are moving in nicely in sizes ranging from 20 lbs to 80lbs, it just depends on the luck of the draw. The nice thing about the Yellowfin Tuna in these areas is they’re hungry. Right now a Cedar Plug, the oldest technology out there and the cheapest lure you can buy is working like it always has! Poppers, Plugs, live bait, it all works right now and the YF Tuna are in the “mood”. While it is still early for Black Marlin we have seen some hook-ups the last couple of days and they’ve been youngsters in the 150 lb range. For Black Marlin, it’s too small to keep and frankly why keep billfish anyway…. Always release when possible!  In reality it is still early for Yellowfin Tuna as well, so to have both Marlin and Tuna at the High Spots at El Banco is exciting.

Mahi Mahi or Dorado Hook up... Rose Lentz

Mahi Mahi or Dorado Hook up... Rose Lentz

Now Corbetena is a little more versatile location for sure. Now there are Yellowfin Tuna in the same size range as we just mentioned, but there is the possibility of Sailfish, Dorado and Marlin here as well. Cubera Snappers are always in the structure for sure, but right now, there is plenty of action from Cabo Corrientes to El Morro to Corbetena.

From shore to El Banco, fifty miles out we see the water temperatures and currents doing exactly what we want to see at this time of the year. This is an indication that the currents are running a little closer in to shore and hitting El Banco head on this year. Unlike the last couple of years when we were looking for Yellowfin we were looking outside of El Banco. This meant a lot of would be Marlin Fisherman decided to go golfing instead of dealing with a day in excess of twelve hours. This year with the recent hurricane activities hanging close to the shore south of PV, when these storm tracks head out to sea the Hurricanes seem to dissipate quickly once they hit 175 miles or so out  to sea. To me this says cooler water is out there. For those who may remember these things, warm water will build the strength of hurricanes and cool water will tear them down. Now when we you see this happen as it has twice now in the last couple of months, it means there is cooler water out there. So again warm water / currents are hitting Corbetena and El Banco dead on, not like the last three years. This in turn keeps the billfish and game fish closer in to shore and that makes it better for all of us, fisherman and fishing companies. This is exciting stuff and for those of us who pay attention to this sort of stuff it is an early indication of how the currents are going so lets hope this continues into August!

If you are looking for Dorado then you have a moving target. These gold and blue beauties have been hanging out in  some serious numbers near Guyavitos in the 20 to 45 lb range anywhere from two to seven miles from shore. They are thick and taking bait. Dorado are also at the Marietta Islands and around Punta Mita, but they will be in the 25lb range at most for the moment. We should be seeing more Dorado in the area, especially at this time of the year. This should change shortly… stay tuned.

Rose Lentz Big Dorado for the papers

Rose Lentz Big Dorado for the papers

For those looking for Rooster fish we have seen the numbers hovering in the not too abundant arena. But that is not to say you won’t have a strike by this quill headed demon! The Marietta Islands near the reefs are still producing some Rooster fish. The area around Punta Mita is also showing some improved signs of life with Rooster fish around Anclote the reef. I would not make a  special trip for Roosters if I were you, but if you’re in the area targeting Dorado, you may have some luck so run a silver diamond jig just in case!

Inside the bay it is still a great value for your fishing dollar. Some days it is actually better fishing in the bay than at the deep water locations. Magnifico (31 ft  Bertram Classic) went out the other day to El Banco and found the fishing better in the bay on the way back in. In fact seven miles out of the Marina there were herds of Yellowfin Footballs in the 20 to 30lb range. It looked like a giant boiling pot of water as the birds were diving and the tuna jumping! So keep an eye on the bay, Near Yelapa to Chimo and points close in to the north there are small, very small Black Marlin and Small Sailfish to be had. Surprising, yes, impossible, of course not. Anything in the bay is possible right now with the perfect water and bait conditions we presently have.

Magnifico 31 ft. Bertram Classic, Best Boat in the Marina

Magnifico 31 ft. Bertram Classic, Best Boat in the Marina

In fact there is so much bait in the water, if you draw a line from Punta Mita to El Banco, there is so much bait in the water that it looks like just one boil after another! So all the building blocks are in place, we just need the players to get here so the game can begin in Ernest!

Quickie Report! Trash Line Returns with Seasonal Rains, Dorado, Rooster Fish & More! Fish Pictures!

As we enter the Rainy season here in tropical Puerto Vallarta we are all looking forward to the Trash Line we get in the bay as a result of the seasonal rains washing all sorts of organic materials and matter down the mountain sides. This  in turn forms a line or a ribbon of stuff that looks like leaves, dirt, just crap in general that will stretch for as much as miles in any direction. This is a good thing for summer fishing in the bay amigos…

Dorado on the Trash Line

Dorado on the Trash Line

Now this cat and mouse game has been going on forever and the larger fish do wind up getting some smaller fish for lunch for sure. But this is how it all works in nature and who are we to judge. But we can use this information to make our fishing days on the water more productive!

Now introduce a three inch silver diamond trolled or cast just a foot or on the clean side of the trash line and you will have arm burning action on light tackle.

Rooster Fish on the Trash Line, Say AhhHHhHHhH

Rooster Fish on the Trash Line, Say AhhHHhHHhH

The Trash line is in the bay everyday once the rains start in ernest. These trash lines can go out for miles and miles and are not always centered in the bay. But for the most part this is where you will find this trash line in the bay. This means short days will be productive  for those on a short budget or just want to head out for smaller gamefish. Either way it works all around.

Dorado, Mahi Mahi or Dolphin, it all taste the same amigos!

Dorado, Mahi Mahi or Dolphin, it all taste the same amigos!

One more reminder, fishing in the rain is a good thing. When the rain drops hit the water surface, from a fish point of view it looks like bait falling back into the water after jumping from the water for a brief escape from harms way. But what goes up must come down. So the rain excites fish like Dorado and Yellowfin Tuna into a frenzy. So the next time you think you want to wait until the rain is gone, it may be a good idea to think that one over again….

I attached a few pictures of Trash Line types of fish you will come across when fishing on the trash line.

So now you know why the Trash Line is Your Friend…..

Spring Marches into summer as Sailfish and Dorado Move into PV’s Fishing Grounds!

Spring Marches into summer as Sailfish and Dorado Move into PV’s Fishing Grounds!

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle

Sitting in my chair sometimes can be a little frustrating when it comes to a popular subject like Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta. Naturally we want to put a positive spin on things and point out what is good and try to stay away from anything negative. Normally we are in winter when we try to keep the visiting anglers spirits up. But we are moving into summer, spring is rapidly disappearing as we begin to feel the summer heat and humidity in and around the Bay of Banderas. With the summer heat and barely bare able humidity for the locals, this is when those world class gamefish of Sailfish, Marlin, Dorado and of course Yellowfin Tuna set up house at El Banco or Corbetena.  Looking at the Calendar you may think it’s July with the Available species at your finger tips, but it is still June which means it is early for this sort of fishing here in PV. So we’re happy with what we have for the time being and the fishing is great as long as you have fuel money and remember it’s still early season fishing. If you keep yourself with that state of mind, you will have a wonderful time fishing this month. The beautiful thing is you don’t have to head out for ten hours to catch some nice game fish. If you are looking for larger fish, then your day will be a little longer, but worth the effort.

Yellowfin Tuna Footballs at El Banco with Michelle Crosby on Animal House

Yellowfin Tuna Footballs at El Banco with Michelle Crosby on Animal House

This week we have seen the Sailfish moving into their primary summer hang-outs, off Punta Mita, Cabo Corrientes, El Morro and the Marietta Islands.  With plenty of bait in the water in the form of Bonito and Skip Jack Tuna, they are having a field day. The water has been very, very blue, almost Cancun blue so the visibility in the water is great for these hungry gamefish for sure. For the coming weeks and months we will be talking about these reliable Billfish in the 8 hr range for the most part. But Sailfish are not limited to closer fishing destinations, you will find them anywhere there is bait and blue water.

Yellowfin Tuna are still heavy in the area, but they are moving or I should say thinning out a little in the bay. The  last few weeks a four hour day fishing off Yelapa or Chimo was a no brainer and it was actually better fishing here than at the deep water locations. Well that is changing now as we see the numbers of Yellowfin Tuna in the 10 to 30 lb range moving around the bay out to the point of Cabo Corrientes where ten miles off the light house you can still hit Black Marlin in the smaller range. Yellowfin Tuna can run up to 100 lbs on rare instances and of course there are Sailfish as we mentioned earlier. Last week we were changing lures every fifteen minutes, now we are seeing simple old fashioned plugs like Cedar Plugs work. I gave some painted plugs of purple to Capt. Tory off Bella Del Mar the other day which he said worked great. Of course he lost one of the two I gave him, so we restocked the boat and they’re out there now giving them a work out. Don’t be afraid to switch your rigs if they aren’t working in 20 minutes or so. Anything is possible and the possibilities change every day. Keep your Mexican ears open on the radio as well, many times they captains are sharing what is working in different areas and this can be a help to you as well. That is if you understand Spanish, so have the crew keep an open ear.

Dorado have been on the slim to none side lately. Punta Mita is showing some signs of life out there with Dorado or Mahi Mahi five to ten miles off the point right up to the rocks off the point. Corbetena has also seen more of these gold and blue beauties move in as well. For now we are still on the low side of what we would be normally seeing when it comes to Dorado here, stay tuned, this will improve as the weeks move by and we enter July….

There has been Black Marlin in the area between Cabo Corrientes and Corbetena, but not at the Rock, strange indeed. There have been some Black Marlin at El Banco, but it is still early for Marlin as we all know, so anything here is a blessing.

The Summer savior, Sierra Mackerels are picking up in number and they will be a day saver for those looking for short days and lots of light tackle action. Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna, Needle fish and more will keep the bay happening. When the rains start in earnest, we will see the trash line form where Dorado and Rooster fish love to feed on the organic materials that flow into the bay. Snook will be doing the same thing at the river mouths.

Here in Puerto Vallarta we have seen many evenings that are threatening rain, but so far the seasonal rains have not started. This is something the locals look and hope for since it will for one thing make the area fresh for a while until the sun steams things up again. But more importantly with the rains the area explodes with fish and the rain water hitting the surface looks like small bait fish hitting the surface. It drives them nutz, but this is when it rains.

Yellowfin Tuna Invade El Banco, Puerto Vallarta Fishing Just Got Good!

Yellowfin Tuna Invade El Banco, Puerto Vallarta Fishing Just Got Good!

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle

Normally as we enter June we don’t expect much in the way of Tuna Fishing, but then again we only think we can predict what is going to happen around Puerto Vallarta and the world famous fishing grounds we are known for. Famous or not, we never really know what we’re going to get out there. So I guess fishing is like a box of chocolates, you never really know what you’re going to get until you sink your teeth into it! Right now we are sinking our teeth into Yellowfin Tuna, nothing considered monsters or Cows for sure, but big enough to be worth your while and fuel dollar to head out to El Banco! Now that I’ve got your panties wet, the Yellowfin are the primary species in any of the fishing grounds right now! So now what are you going to do? Summer is here and it´s time to put your money where your finned fantasy lies. Stay tuned!

Yellowfin Tuna At El Banco, They are everywhere, Use Lures and live bait!

Yellowfin Tuna At El Banco, They are everywhere, Use Lures and live bait!

Let’s start with the real news. For the last couple of weeks we’ve had bait, perfect water temperatures, clear green water, and nobody heading out to the fishing grounds due to the seasonal slump that normally comes in May and early June. But we are moving out of that period now and we have Yellowfin Tuna coming out of our ears at El Banco! That’s right folks, El Banco has come to life with good sized fish in the 40 to 80 lb range. Plentiful, hungry, aggressive, all those words apply to what is happening out there right now. As normal when the Yellowfin Tuna invade El Banco, the abundant bait is less abundant as they stuff themselves. Right now if you rigged your car keys with a hook, you would be catching fish as fast as you could boat them. Now this is some straight up news amigos and this may not last for long as these Yellowfin Tuna have a tendency to move in, and then move out. But for now, they are here and hanging around the high spots. But if for some reason you’re a few miles off the peaks, no worries, there are Yellowfin everywhere. One strange thing is you won’t see diving birds indicating where the fish are! So don´t be fooled, they are there and they are looking for a free meal, plastic, wood or living, they will hit anything you put in front of them for sure, so you don’t need much more than a pole and a shinny hook! Lures, Cedar plugs, it is all working so just get your butt out there! And do it now! For the record, the water is BLUE, 85 degrees with smooth seas.

Something I have not mentioned lately is that Marlin are trickling into the area. Again off El Banco there have been some Striped Marlin in the 250 lb range and some Sailfish sightings with very few being boated! This is just the beginning so be patient.

Corbeteña, if you are at this moment looking for Yellowfin at Corbeteña, forget it. Not there and for some reason the conditions are perfect for every sportfish we have there as well. So until things start firing there, don’t waste your time, money or fuel here. Of course we have Cubera Snappers, and other smaller fish, but nothing I would be hunting for at this moment… stay tuned, this could change before you finish reading this report!

The Marietta Islands after a winter of nonstop action has slowed down. There are still Rooster fish, but not abundant. There are lots of Jack Crevalls, but they will be moving out shortly, frankly I am still surprised they are in the bay with water temperature climbing by the day. Bonito, Skippies (small skip jack tuna), Needle fish or False Marlin as they are called are picking up in numbers. A weird looking tubular fish, they fight very well and are perfect for kids in the bay or at the Islands. For now a day will produce smaller gamefish, perfect for light tackle days.  Now when the Sailfish move-in with larger numbers the Marietta Islands will have Sailfishas well, so save those pennies and dimes for a few weeks more and we should see some changes. Or that is what my crystal ball shows, but it’s a little hard to see around the cracks and duct tape so don’t hold me to this!

First mate Fleco, Me (Stan Gabruk), and Capt. Tori, 6 hrs in the Bay

First mate Fleco, Me (Stan Gabruk), and Capt. Tori, 6 hrs in the Bay

Off Punta Mita, a place I haven’t spoken much of in the last few months, but there are Sailfish off the point about seven miles. The numbers have been increasing, very few heading out for Sailfish right now, but this will change shortly since an 8 hour day will get you some Billfish! Live bait is king and they are taking baits if you come across one. So good luck and send me a picture of what you caught!

Inside the bay is still alive with some great light tackle action. Skippies or Skip Jack Tuna have been all over the southern end of the bay from Yelapa to the tip of Cabo Corrientes. Magnifico the other day was boating 40 lb Yellowfin Tuna like crazy.  Jack Crevalls, Needle fish, Bonito and when the rains start shortly you´ll have the trash line to work as well. So hang in there, the field is ready for all the players to arrive.

Just a reminder, the Marina Vallarta is empty, yet it is still the ¨Other Malicon or Boardwalk¨ in Vallarta. With 15 restaurants and tons of shopping you can find that little something you just have to give _____ insert name… Don’t forget to visit El Faro Bar or the Light House Bar depending on if you speak Spanish or English. It is atop the light house on the boardwalk in the village in Marina Vallarta. With appetizers and a great drink menu they can order Italian food from my favorite restaurant in Marina Vallarta, Dante Ristorante. So tell Teresa in the El Faro Bar that Stan from Master Baiter’s said to come by and check out a sunset in the most romantic view and bar in Puerto Vallarta. You´ll be glad you did…

Puerto Vallarta Fishing Just Got Strange, Plenty of Bait, Marlin in the Bay?

Puerto Vallarta Fishing Just Got Strange, Plenty of Bait, Marlin in the Bay?

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle

It’s an amazing thing out there right now, nothing is as you would hope for and yet we are ass still positive about the upcoming season. The water temperatures are right, the water is either clear green or blue if you are out far enough. Bait is not an issue, plenty of bait for sure, which is always a good thing! The stage is set, now all we need are the players. That is not to say there are no fish, but if you are heading out to the deep water locations of Corbeteña and El Banco, your fuel dollars can be better spent right now.

Lets touch bases on the deep, blue water locations of El Banco and Corbeteña. What you have to look forward to is blue water about 28 miles out from Marina Vallarta. You will see lots of bait in the water, but you won’t find any fish. My suggestion on Corbeteña is to head out to the drop, about 15 miles or so west of the rock and see what may be there. There has been the occasional Dorado and Striped Marlin Hook-up, but not enough to get me to open my wallet for ever increasing fuel prices! The Same goes for El Banco, you may find something if you head out far enough, but GuerroAzteca headed out for a two day trip and found nothing but nothing to interested in the baits they were offering. So for the present, steer clear of these normally hot summer locations.

Black Marlin at Cabo Corrientes?? You Bet.... Closer in than you might think!

Black Marlin at Cabo Corrientes?? You Bet.... Closer in than you might think!

North, quite a ways north is Guyavitos and they have fish, probably. Sailfish and Striped Marlin have been hanging out about 20 miles or so off shore. Dorado are also in the area and the ones that have been boated are of good size in the 30 to 40ish pound range. You will spend the whole day looking for fish in this area, but if you are hungry for billfish, then this is probably you r best bet right now….

Punta Mita is a little slow right now, but some of these ¨wise guy¨ captains have been setting up buoys of coconut palm leaves in the Punta Mita Area closer in. So if you are not one of the privileged few to know the locations, run the sounder in the usual locations and you will know where to find them. Bait fish and diving birds that don’t move is a strong indication of what is going on there.

The Marietta Islands are less than spectacular right now, again with the clear green water which is loaded with bait in the form of Skip Jack Tuna and Bonito. Rooster Fish are still here in diminishing numbers, but the few that have been boated are in the 40 lb range. But be patient, they won’t be jumping in the boat amigo!  Still for the buck, I would consider this location if you´re flush with fuel cash… There have been a few Dorado here as well, small, but encouraging for sure. Stay tuned….

699 lb Black Marlin, June 6, 2006.... This is the pattern Early to Mid June Yearly

699 lb Black Marlin, June 6, 2006.... This is the pattern Early to Mid June Yearly

Strange enough, the place to be right now is in the bay if you are looking for some decent action. No kidding, Jack Crevalls, Skippies (Skip Jack Tuna) in the 20lb range,  Bonito about the same size. Snappers around the rocks and soon with the seasonal rains on the way, there will be Robalo going crazy near the river mouths as all that organic food like leaves, bugs, seeds, roll down the mountains directly into the fish food chain! Off Yelapa there has been so much bait and the water is perfect temperature that a Black Marlin, 150 lbs only, was boated about twelve miles off the beach. Strange stuff indeed, but I guess it just shows fish are where you find them!

Further south in the bay, Cabo Corrientes specifically is really a great place to head out to with some light tackle.  Skip Jack Tuna a little larger in the 40 lb range are there taking baits like nutz!  Magnifico boated a  Black Ma rlin  and then yesterday hit a 100 lb Plus Yellow Fin Tuna. So this area is firing right now. Head out to Chimo and drop anything you want, they will hit it lure wise. Lures are working better than live bait for this brief moment in time. Yellow, the Mexican flag (green, white & red), Rapallas, Blue, Daisy Chains, you name it, give it a try on light tackle. You´ll be glad you did. It would not surprise me much if you found Sailfish in the area and maybe some Marlin if you head out a little ways. Of course this all depends on how thick your wallet is!  A ten hour day will show some results. With some luck you may find Sailfish there as well….

As we enter June the Marlin normally, notice I say normally…. Come in. We get a week of big Billfish like Blue or Black Marlin mix in the deep water locations. Could be the first, second or even third week, but it has been a pattern now for the last few years and hopefully we can count on this to hold true. Cross your fingers, toes and whatever else you can cross on your body, stay away from crossing your eyes, we wouldn´t want to get anything stuck now would we??

Very few boats heading out in the mornings gives us a pretty thin thread to base a fishing report. But Magnifico has been heading out to the areas I just mentioned and as one of the finest boats in the Marina Vallarta, everyone will agree in the know, if they don´t catch fish, there are no fish to be had. Now they have been coming in with fish, but it has been work. No worries, it´s late May and things will start to pick up again hopefully in Mid June. It´s just a matter of time before we see larger Yellowfin Tuna turn up along with their running mates of Black and Blue Marlin.

With the Bonito and especially the Skip Jack Tuna out there, it is just a matter of time before we see desired results of big fish moving into the area. Let’s hope it’s sooner than later.

I know I write a lot about how you need to be careful with cab drivers. But I had this gentleman come in today, a regular reader, tell me a story of how he left 20 pesos with a cab driver who promised to bring him change in the morning. Ordinarilly this sort of situation would wind up with this trusting sole never seeing his change. You see if a cab driver does not have change, you don’t legally have to pay the guy and frankly I wouldn’t have given this guy the extra trust. But I just wanted to balance out the comments, there are good people who are trust worthy out there… I love Mexico!

Puerto Vallarta Fishing Stagnates Slightly as Summer Slowly Rolls in

Puerto Vallarta Fishing Stagnates Slightly as Summer Slowly Rolls in

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter’s Sportfishing and Tackle

I have been a little reluctant to write this fishing report since what was working well has suddenly come to a screeching halt. This is not exactly unexpected, but it still isn´t something we can be happy about. Water temperatures are hovering in the 78 degree range with changing currents. As a result the water has turned a mercy-clear brown at the Marietta Islands and will probably be spreading to El Banco and Corbeteña. May is a transition month and the winter fish are moving out as the summer fish are rolling in slowly. With tourism down, I guess that if this is going to happen, it is a good thing it is happening now. Now this is not to say there are no fish to be had…. Stay tuned!

For the last several months the Marietta Islands have been the place to be. As we all know nothing stays the same forever and the fishing has fallen off a little lately. The last few days an eight hour trip to the Marietta‘s has still been productive, but not like a few weeks ago. One change in the area is that Bonito are moving in, the first sign that summer is creeping up on us. Jack Crevallsare becoming less abundant and what we were seeing in the bay is thinning out. Nothing strange here, again, the seasons are changing.

Sailfish At Corbeteña

Sailfish At Corbeteña

There are still Dorado north of Punta Mita, but you may find them smaller than you would hope for at 15 to 25 lbs. May is right on time for these fish, but when they move in like they seem to be, then larger Dorado can spring up on you in a heartbeat. So be positive, be equipped and give it a chance. If you don´t see any Dorado, then head to Anclote to see if there are still any Rooster Fish in the area. With a little luck you´ll find some light tackle action. Use Google Eyes for live bait or Diamond Jigs before you jump into color, lures that is.

Inside the bay the Skip Jack Tuna have returned around the Yelapa to the point of Cabo Corrientes. Sierra Mackerals are a thing of the past these days as water temperatures increase. Jack Crevalls are dropping in numbers quickly as we see Needle fish begin to take their place. Yes folks, it´s May, the transition month. Bonito are moving in with the Skippies as well. To have these 20lb game fish in the area is a big draw for Billfish. Inside the bay, these are great fish for those looking for some arm burning act ion on light tackle. Fishing on the fly is perfect around the rocks near Los Arcos. The shallows and  rock reefs in Nuevo Vallarta is a place where Skippies will hang out on occasion, so if on a short day, this may be an area to remember as everyone heads south!

El Banco has been quiet. With tourism down once again we are having a hard time getting a feel for what is happening there. Normally what happens at Corbeteña will happen sooner or later at El Banco.

Now Corbeteña on the other hand is opening it’s sleepy eyes as Skip Jack Tuna of 20 to 30 lbs reappear in their summer playground. Naturally the Sailfish and Striped Marlin there are happy to see them as well. Google Eyes for live bait have been working well, but lures are doing well also. Petrileros are on top of the list with purple combinations being a good second choice. Don´t be afraid to mix colors up when trolling. They are fickle creatures and you may find something different will catch their eyes, so be creative amigos. The Sailfish are small in the 50 to 70 lb range and the Striped Marlin are only in the 125 to 175 lb range. So have fun and remember to release these ¨Babies¨ to live and play another day!

People are always asking me why some boats are price one way and others are priced another way. When looking for a fishing boat, remember it all comes down to what you want to pay, and what you expect for the money. If you are one of those guys who thinks a fishing boat is a fishing boat, then you’re right. If you are one of those types who want a great and experienced captain, first mate and excellent working boat, then you are right as well… Here in Puerto Vallarta there are times when you can catch fish on your car keys. In those times you don’t need anything special, even electronics are a waste if you are surface trolling and hitting bait balls with diving birds. A cheap boat can catch fish just as well as an expensive boat in those cases. The difference is when the fishing is not like fishing in a barrel, then is when you might expect to pay for a better level of professionalism. Many times it can come down to the color of the lure you are running. Other times you can run a silver diamond jig and come back in looking like a king. But when it comes to deep water fishing, you might want to know where the ridges and valleys are. Without Electronics, you have no clue where they are exactly. If you are at El Banco, many a time I have only caught fish directly over the high spot! Twenty feet off the spots and forget it, no fish. Or what do you do when the fish, Yellow Tuna in particular,     when they go deep how do you know what depth to set your down rigger? Fast boats are also going to cost more than a slower boat. Now if you are heading into the bay, a slow boat to China will be to your liking. But fast boats, boats that actually use fuel as it goes up in price, well you´ll have to pay a little more for those. Remember, you are paying for time with your line in the water, not heading out and back from the fishing grounds. If you are looking at a cheap boat that needs to find a different captain every time it heads out, then they will be an economy boat that may catch fish and you´ll hopefully have fun. But there are those who want an experienced Captain who has a track record of catching fish when POSERS are telling how good they are, yet are ill-equipped to the challenge, lacking  in skill and knowledge , with a low level of equipment and tackle. But then again, this will cost you more money. So how do you find a boat that is a happy balance between price and quality?  Well when you figure that one out, let me know. Boats don´t have to be pretty, but appearance is always a sign of maintenance. Your captain doesn’t have to speak English, but communication is a good thing. You don´t have to get a boat that provides bait, but you´ll have to pay for it anyway on the way out. You don’t have to head out on an insured boat and there are many that are not, but what if something happens? It all comes down to price vs. expectations. Me, I want fish, I know nothing is free and I also know that if everyone is in one price range, the cheapest guy wins almost all the time for those looking to go fishing on a slim budget. More expensive boats with better captains and clients who are willing to pay for this level of world class fishing, will find the extra expense is always worth it if the difference means not catching fish. So how do you pick a boat?

Well that is about it for now, until next time, don´t forget to kiss your fish……

Sailfish, Striped Marlin Finally Find Puerto Vallarta Fishing Grounds!

Sailfish, Striped Marlin Finally Find Puerto Vallarta Fishing Grounds!

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle

Finally, I have something to write about, Sailfish and Striped Marlin have finally made an appearance in Puerto Vallarta fishing Grounds. Finally we have a reason to head out to Corbeteña and actually have fish that are ready and anxious to attack a Google Eye!

OK, first things first, the water temperatures are in the 76 to 78 degree mark and have increased rapidly in the last week. The humidity (79%) in the air is thick and the temperatures are only about 81. We are on the verge of an early rainy season, yet we are late for Sailfish by about a month and half. From this point forward we will see some rapid changes in air temperatures, water temperatures and water clarity. With the current changes and the soon to come seasonal rains there may be some dirty water issues, like we all have learned to expect. But for now the water is a kinda clear brown / green color. Not blue, but clear enough to see your bait! With plenty of Google Eyes on hand you will catch the early season billfish off Corbeteña. In fact 7 miles off the Rock you´ll find Sails and Stripers! Just find your way out there and you´ll catch fish right now! If you are looking for Blue water by the way it is about 100 miles out. This is good news even if it is a little on the far side.

Sailfish and Striped Marlin at Corbeteña

Sailfish and Striped Marlin at Corbeteña

El Banco is a different story, nothing but a few Jack Crevalls out there for the moment. No real reports coming in from this area, but one thing is for sure, this condition will not remain the same for much longer. Keep an eye on my articles and blog (www.masterbaiters.wordpress.com) to keep up with the latest and greatest.. Things may change rapidly in the next few months!

Off Sayulita we are finally seeing some Dorado, that’s right I said Dorado, but keep calm they´re very, very small of six to nine kilos or under 15 pounds…. But again we all know this will improve quickly!

Update May 11:  Suddenly Dorado have appeared around the point and at Sayulita. These beauties are running anywhere from 30 to 45lbs and it was a real surprise to see Dorado turn up in this size range since we have seen nothing of size to speak of. 8 hr day will get you several species these days with more coming…..

Skip Jack Tuna have turned back up in the bay near Yelapa! Now when the Skippies return, this is the first sign the water temperatures have changed direction and as an indication, this is a signal we are on the door steps of summer! YeHa!! Lots of Jack Crevalls as well I the area, but this will change because these are cooler water fish which means they’re probably uncomfortable as it is right now. But when there is plenty of bait in the area, why leave? If you are around Los Arcos, the two large rocks in the bay past Conches Chinas, there are larger schools feeding on the surface, so a short day can be productive with small Tuna! This is bait for larger Yellowfin Tuna, so that can’t be bad!

If you are still looking for Large Rooster fish (30-70 lbs) and Snappers (25 – 40 lbs) then the Marietta Islands

El Morro, the same. For what seems like forever, the fishing in these two locations has been saving the day for fisherman for the last few month s and frankly if there weren’t any fish in these areas I would have had almost nothing to write about. I know my articles and blog have been a broken record, but this is changing and I couldn’t be happier. It won’t be long now before I turn into a broken record talking about Sailfish and Skip Jack Tuna hanging around the area. The question is what is going to happen to the Rooster Fish. We know they like warmer water and tolerate cooler water when there is plenty of bait!

It looks like we are about two weeks away from having some major billfish action at the usual places. When the Stripers show up, they like the water a little cooler than Blue and Black Marlin. So the Stripers will probably continue their trek to Cabo where the water is cooler and more to the Stripers liking!

With tourism in it’s slowest time of the year we are slow to be sure. High Season for tourism is gone, we will get the summer travelers who melt in the sun and humidity. Quickie Report: Water Temperatures Rocket, Sailfish, Striped Marlin Sightings, Fishing High Season is coming fast!

 Rooster Fish at Litibu

Rooster Fish at Litibu

I don´t normally write something on my blog if there is nothing happening fishing wise, but I do like to let all thirty of you know when conditions are changing and what we think, hope would be a better word, might be a possibility, maybe….. you get the point.

The last few days the humidity has spiked to where the air temperatures in Puerto Vallarta have remained in the normal range (81 Degrees), the humidity shot up to 79% with a high pressure center sitting right over us , which means the 81 degrees felt like 94 degrees as per the weather channel! It was shocking to say the least how this just sprung up like this, the humidity that is. You may say ¨What does this mean to me¨?  Well every year as summer marches in you can feel the curtain of humidity envelop your body as you walk in the sun. May if the beginning of the heat and the humidity. For most people this is called low season when it comes to tourism. But in reality, we´re talking about fishing here and while the seasonal tourist leave before they melt, we of course know this is the sign we´ve been looking for.  For better or for worse, the seasonal changes are beginning now!

Water temperatures have jumped up to 79 degrees, four degrees warmer in just three days. This means the currents are changing and we are glad to see this. With the warm currents we will find the Sailfish and Marlin return shortly. In fact there have been several sightings near Guyavitos of Sailfish, Striped Marlin and now Dorado! YeHa! There is plenty of bait in the water, the conditions are perfect as they presently are for Billfish return. That‘s the positive news, but there is a down side to currents changing. And that would be the dirty water. You see the mountains here in the area are Adobe clay. When it rains in the summer this adobe silt works its way down to the bay via streams and rivers. This will eventually settle on the bottom of the bay and other areas near the bay. When the currents clash it creates swirling situations that basically mix it all up. Now this is a unwelcome sight or condition, but it is necessary since this is an early sign that the currents have changed in earnest!

Once again what does this mean to us as fisherman, well let’s hope it means more fish, the return of Dorado in larger numbers and the possibility of Yellowfin Footballs coming into the area. Now my crystal ball is broken, and the duct tape I have holding it together gets in the way, but this is what came through so let’s see what happens….

On the present conditions it is still all about Rooster Fish and Snappers at either Litibu, which is north of Punta Mita or the area around El Morro or the Marietta Islands. The temperature changes are a neutral condition to them…. No Sailfish or Marlin boated yet that I know of and with very few boats leaving to go fishing in the morning it is even more difficult to say what is exactly happening. Short days in the bay are always producing fish, but nothing the magazine reader would be interested in. Yet smaller kids and adults looking for a smaller game fish can still have a great time in four to six hours as well.

OK, that is it for now… remember, this is a quickie….  Report that is!  Hahahaa….

Big Snappers, Larger Rooster Fish hitting Large Rapallas!

Big Snappers, Larger Rooster Fish hitting Large Rapallas!

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle

My desk top Weather Channel icon tells me today that it is 81degrees, Humidity over 70%, Smooth seas, and cool breezes in the evening. Puerto Vallarta (PV) is perfect weather for us Human types right now, but the calendar tells us that we are now moving into tourisms slow season. Many of the hotels will scale back employees, close down others for the summer and go into a holding pattern.  Gone or going are the family types who want to just go out in the bay for a short day, see some whales and catch Moby Dick! The Month of May is one of the worst for businesses in PV. Even the Mexican Nationals desert this jewel of a city. So much for people, now comes High Season for Fishing! As winter lingers on this has to be the longest run of Rooster Fish I have ever seen! For weeks now we have been seeing these Mohawk headed demons at the Marietta Islands and off Sayulita.

Little has changed as late and if you were targeting Rooster fish, you got your wish and fuel money’s worth for sure! The same goes for Pargo or Snappers as well. Plenty of bait, extremely smooth seas, perfect weather, clear green water or blue water farther out. The Roosters at the Marietta Islands and Sayulita are anywhere from 40lbs to 70lbs it just depends on your luck. There are still Grouper, Sierra Mackerals and a few Bonito at the Marietta Islands as well.

Snapper at the gaf, Marietta Islands, Puerto Vallarta

Snapper at the gaf, Marietta Islands, Puerto Vallarta

Snappers have also taken over the playground near both El Morro and the Marietta Islands. From mid-sized to larger anything is possible. The smallest keeper is about 20 lbs up to 45lbs on the Snappers, but larger sizes on the Pargo.

Dorado Sightings ten miles outside of Corbeteña is the first Dorado seen in this area. This is a good sign, but my crystal ball has a crack in it and the duct tape keeps getting in the way. The best I can make out is the water temperatures are warming up daily, ever so slightly. There have been flying fish at El Banco, but they come in quickly and leave quickly. As a favorite food of Marlin and Sailfish you would expect to see some sort of Billfish show up soon. Namely Sailfish… My picture is fading, but Corbeteña is showing some signs of life in the Cubera Snapper department if you are trolling near some structure or bottom fishing.  You can get snappers at the Marietta Islands, so wait for the day something is there to catch… I know it´s like watching a clock. Sailfish are more than a month late, let’s hope this is not an indication of a late summer fishing season. Well the picture has faded….stay tuned!

Snapper On The Gaff

Snapper On The Gaff

With very few people in Marina Vallarta, there are very few fishing boats going out so it is difficult to know what exactly is happening out there. But there have been several short day trips that are great for kids right now. Smaller fish like Jack Crevalls to 30lbs, Snappers, Needle fish and smaller grouper are around the rocks and structure. For winter fishing there are always fish to be had in the bay, but it won’t be Moby Dick no matter what that timeshare OPC’s told you….

Now you can go out there and run live bait which is always a safe way to go. But the inside story on getting a hit is to use Rapallas of larger size, trolled forty to sixty feet. Using a down rigger is not a bad idea. Also if you are in the area where you may think there are flying fish, troll poppers on the surface at a higher speed of six to eight miles an hour skipping the popper on the surface. Silver with pink is working well for colors right now. Yellow and pink are both good colors to run right now. Remember this is our inside secret to keep it to yourself.

All and all we are still watching the clock for the Sailfish to arrive. We won’t see any Marlin until the second to third week of June… that is if they are on time this year. Yellowfin Tuna will start moving into the area surrounding Corbeteña and El Banco come early to late July if all goes according to what is normal and what my fractured crystal ball tells me! Remember early reservations on boats will guarantee you get the quality boat and service from higher end captains and boats. But don’t reserve blindly, make sure you know what the conditions are before you book. I would say to wait until you hear encouraging news on the fishing front before you book fishing trips and hotels. I suggest The Marriott Casa Magma or the Westin Hotels in Marina Vallarta. Located on top of the Village in Marina Vallarta and the tenth best privately owned marina in the world, you are just steps away from the fishing boats and all you will want or need…

That’s about it for now, until next week, don´t forget to kiss your fish!

Abundant Rooster Fish, Pargo and Milk Fish at the Marietta Islands!

Abundant Rooster Fish, Pargo and Milk Fish at the Marietta Islands!

Once again Paradise had another wonderful week when it comes to Tourism and of course fishing in our world famous fishing grounds of Puerto Vallarta. We are seeing some increases in water temperatures which is good for the cause of course, but the currents are swirling and the warm water can be hard to find. If you can find a warm streak, then you‘ve got fish, if not, then best wishes! We’ve been waiting on summer and the larger game fish to arrive which is like watching a clock, it will never move until you look away.  With the warmer water we are starting to see some of the cold water species like Jack Crevalls and Sierra Mackerals, stables for us during the winter, move out. There are still some of them around and some in good size ranges, but this is their last hurrah and will be gone before June arrives! These welcome changes are painfully slow for a guy like me. But this is normal and right on time. With the moves upwards in water temperatures we are seeing some positive signs which mean the larger fish like Sailfish and Striped Marlin will be heading our way soon, but not soon enough for me!

Milk Fish at Marietta Islands on Policonfondido , 8 hr day!

Milk Fish at Marietta Islands on Policonfondido , 8 hr day!

The area north of Punt a Mita, Sayulita to b e exact is still smoking wit h Rooster Fish action and some Dorado are starting to hang out in the area, but no promises amigo. Roosters are anywhere from 30 to 70 lbs and Dorado while s till on the smaller side of 30lbs are still fun to catch and better to eat! Live bait is king, but lures of yellow and black are working well.

One of the early season indicators that summer is on its way in is when the foot ball Yellowfin Tuna show up.  At Corbeteña this week we have seen them arrive. Now they are not worth heading gout 38 miles for, but they will hopefully draw some larger fish into the area looking for a nice free meal!  Sailfish have been seen in the area, again… but none have been boated.

Inside the bay things are less than spectacular, but there are still plenty of Jack Crevalls to keep the visiting Anglers happy.  Snappers and Needle fish are taking up the slack. For now the younger Anglers are doing well in the areas of structure or rocks around the Los Arcos area.

As a whole the fishing is good, but it will get better soon. One thing we are dealing with right now as I mentioned earlier are the swirling currents.  Some days you will find clean green water. Others you´ll find it murky at best. You will have to be flexible and patient, once you find some warm water then anything is possible.  There is plenty of bait in the water, the days are longer and t he conditions are as they should be for this time of the year. From now until the first few weeks of June we will be in a transition period where the conditions and fish will change daily. With Sailfish in the areas of Manzanillo and Barra we know that when the wager clears up the fish will be coming in. Save your fuel dollars when you can get a better bang for your fuel buck or head to the Marietta Islands for a nice 8 hour day. Your time and money will be well spent!   The fishing will turn world class in the next few weeks, until then do whatever it takes to make the little woman happy. Get yourself some extra points and when the fishing gets to a frenzy level again, you’ll have some wiggle room. It won’t hurt to send them to the spa these days either. Just remember, it’s cheaper to keep her!

That’s about it for now, until next week, don´t forget to kiss your fish!

It’s All About Rooster Fish and Red Snappers, We’re Happy to Have Them!

Rooster Fish at the Marietta Islands with Steve Orcutt on Magnifico 4/16/11

It’s still about Rooster Fish and Snappers when it comes to fishing in Puerto Vallarta right now. If you are heading out to the deep water locations of El Banco or Corbeteña, you’d be better off fishing at the Marietta Islands or El Morro. Rooster fish and Snappers have been ranging in the 20 to 70lb range. Those heading out for less than eight hours expecting fish will find very small game fish to choose from at best. Jack Crevalls are being seen less and less, but I did see some today when sailing, should have had a pole with me… But Jacks like cold water, but the water is warming up ever so slightly day by day. So they´re moving out and they have saved many a day fishing for clients and kept my guaranteed charters happy!

First lets get the report out of the way. Like the title says the fishing is mostly about Rooster Fish and Snappers at the Marietta Islands and El Morro, they are taking live bait and lures. Color or size appropriate types make no difference.  The one fact that is messing with peoples day is that most people have this thing in their mind that early morning fishing is best. Well if you are on some lake or stream, this may hold true. But here in Puerto Vallarta the bite is a moving target. We’ve been looking at the early stages of a full moon which normally means the bite is early in the morning. But this is not the case and if you pay attention to one thing in this article it is this: The bite is in the afternoon after 1 O’clock and then again about sunset. So you early morning types are going to find the afternoon better for you if you want to boat fish. At the Marietta Islands there have been recent days when you could see the fish under the boat, but they would not take bait for nothing. When this happens there is a very, very good chance that these fish (Roosters and Snappers) are eating jelly fish! At this time of the year they can be found in several areas of the bay and the Marietta Islands or El Morro are no strangers to these conditions. So every day is not on fire fishing wise and then there are days when you can´t get a bait in the water fast enough. Like always it just depends on what you come across and your lucky stars!  So there is your report amigos. If you are in the bay. Less than 25 miles out of Marina Vallarta, then you are catching smaller gamefish of Snappers, Sierra Mackerals, Jack Crevalls, Snook  and even small Barracudas.

If you do head out to the islands, remember the reef is still being patrolled by the navy and I heard one boat was cited for fishing in a non-fishing / restricted zone. The ticket was $1,500.00 usd equivalent in pesos. Not fun for the captain or the clients.

North of Sayulita there are still smaller Dorado in the area but nothing to get excited about, hand in there they´ll be  getting larger soon and moving into the Marietta Island area hopefully soon. But one never knows! Presently up near San Pancho or San Francisco in English you can boat these blue and gold beauties if you have a strong itch to spend some fuel money!

Just forget heading out to El Banco or Corbeteña until the water warms up enough to warrant the trip. Bottom fishing is alright, but for the money you are still better off at the Marietta Islands.

Bait is not an issue, we have plenty of bait fish in the area and have seen the flying fish move in. I expected to see Sailfish or Striped Marlin to move in but this has not happened. I have gotten to the point where I should stop talking about what is normal and just report what is happening.  But when things or conditions move outside of normal, then you have to ask yourself why or what is different than previous years. Last year was a La Nina Year, so we know we have El Nino and La Nina is out of our hair for at least a few years. That explains what has happened to the fishing here in Puerto Vallarta and Cabo. We are now moving into the summer fishing season where we should shortly see huge fish. I am keeping my eyes open watching water temps, type of fish coming in or of course not coming in! March is normally the month we see Sailfish move into the area, but it’s now mid April and there have been a few sightings, with nothing being boated. So they are late, but not too late.

As I mentioned earlier, is very difficult to know what we can plan for. With Yellowfin Tuna following the currents, El Banco has not been the hot spot for Yellowfin Tuna it normally is in the summer for the last couple of years! El Banco is fifty miles out of Puerto Vallarta. The currents generally favor El Banco and hits this area dead on. This helps the fishing off what I call the Marlin McDonald’s of the sea. With plenty of bait hanging around the deep and not so deep structure there, if the currents are swinging in the El Banco area we will have huge, Monster Yellowfin Tuna.  That goes for Marlin and Sailfish also. But for the record, we get huge Black Marlin, Big Blue Marlin and Sailfish here in the area even if the Yellowfin pass us up…… You will normally see good Yellowfin Tuna Fishing in cabo when the currents are farther west than El Banco, just like the last couple of years!
With few boats at best heading out fishing it is difficult at best to relay information to folks looking for condition and bite information. Master Baiter’s is right there as well with few boats heading out daily. With rising fuel prices and economic conditions night mares are made of, there has been a real down turn in tourism here in Mexico, to be specific Puerto Vallarta!

Remember, the fish don’t care if you show up or not. So if you are going out there go fishing when the bite is happening, not when it is most convenient for you and the family / wife.  That way you can get the biggest bang for your fuel buck. Not hear later how you left before the bite even started! If that is the case, and the bite is not at a convenient time for you and the other reasons (people / tours), then you would be better off golfing with that money.  I see this happen every day and for now it is best to sleep in and catch fish in the afternoon!

As the oldest fishing company in Puerto Vallarta and the only company with any World Recognized Fishing Championships like the WBS Billfishing Series Grand Champions (2000 and 2001) under our belt. Simi Quickie Report: It´s all Red Snappers and Rooster Fish

Rooster Fish like this at the Marietta Islands!

Rooster Fish like this at the Marietta Islands!

Just a quickie report….. We are now moving into the summer fishing season where we see huge fish and I am keeping my eyes open for the time of year, water temps, type of fish coming in or of course not coming in!

March is normally the month we see Sailfish move into the area, but it’s now mid April and there have been a few sightings, but no boatings. So they are late, but  too late.

We normally see Dorado turn up about this time of the year in stronger numbers. This year Dorado are moving into the areas  north of Sayulita. While it seems late, it is better than last  year when the Dorado of any size did not show up until July. And not  in abundant numbers either! In fact  Dorado all last summer was a tough nut to crack… that is if you could find them. Even the commercial buoys we normally invade were slim pickings for sure. Many of the captains blamed the long liners and gill netters for the down turn in Dorado Fishing. But even the long liners were slim when it came to fish.

Right now, as I mentioned earlier, is very difficult to know what we can plan for. With Yellowfin Tuna following the currents, El Banco has not been the hot spot for Yellowfin Tuna it normally is in the Summer! El Banco is  fifty miles out of Puerto Vallarta. The currents generally favor El Banco and hit them dead on.
Bloody Decks and their crew of wise asses have been telling anyone on that bulletin board site how cool they are by going cowboy and fishing a place all the old timers, the same guys I learned from years and years ago, won´t go  because of one big fat reason, you will have your boat confiscated by the prison authorities at the Tres Maria Islands! You see the prison islands or Tres Maria Islands are eighty miles or so there one way from Vallarta. These idiot cowboys started heading up this way and making noises how they had discovered this new ¨frontier¨ for fishing where Monster Yellowfin Tuna in winter waters , the same way several of them take credit for finding El Banco 30 years after the locals were making a living here fishing! Now those big fat blow hards are keeping a low profile as  these cowboys and their boats are being taken in. Several captains have been put in with the prison population but only after their heads have been shaved. I have written several articles on several boats that have had issues with the authorities there for fishing within the 15 mile limit. That’s right folks, there is a 15 mile no fishing zone for those who don’t  have one of those impossible licenses it takes to fish there.  I am not going to mention names and companies, but if you ask Capt. Steve Torres off Ana Maria about his four days in prison and what his cowboy clients had to go through, you´ll find a big mouth who learned how to keep his mouth shut. But he forgot to share these experiences on  Bloody Decks. There have been several boats that Bloody Decks supports (or has a vested interest in) that have been approached like the Maximus who didn’t  have enough fishing licenses, a Bogus permit to fish the islands,  insurance or life preservers. Yet they are very  happy to  take your $1,500.00 dollars as they put you on the illegal fishing boat out of La Cruz Marina! So much for this bulletin board on steroids as being a real source of information as they promote their own agenda here in PV. So the moral of this story is don´t listen to those beating their chest, talk with those that have been here in the Marina for years and ask them what you should be doing. It´s funny, there are several Captains / people that know better on better  quality boats that have been heading out this way to the Tres Maria Islands because if they didn’t go, there were those who would.  They were cautious, but still there…

For now there is decent fishing for those who can  handle a short 8 hr day. Those looking for shorter days are finding themselves hearing reports on the radio of fishing frenzies as they’re hoping to hook into something within the bay ……. There are also those in the Marina and else where who will tell you that Moby Dick in the bay… He isn’t and never will be, so be informed!

I attached a recent picture that represents the size of Snappers and Rooster fish we are seeing …. Some days are better than others and if you are not at the fishing grounds  around 1 O’clock  to about 7:00 pm, you will be hard pressed to catch fish.

Remember, the fish don’t care is you show up or not. So if you are going out there go fishing when the bite is happening, not when it is most convenient for you and the family / wife.  That way you can get the bang for your buck you just paid for. Not hear how you left before the bite even started! If that is the case, and the bite is not at a convenient time  for you and the other reasons (people / tours), then  you would be better off golfing with that money.  I see this happen every day and for now it is best to sleep in and catch fish in the afternoon!

So much for a quickie report…. I will be posting a fishing report in the next day or two…Any thing is possible when it comes to fish… Stay tuned…..

Waiting for Summer, Snappers at El Morro Big Time!

Waiting for Summer, Snappers at El Morro Big Time! Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle

Rooster Fish and Grant Charbonett , Magnifico, Puerto Vallarta

Rooster Fish and Grant Charbonett , Magnifico, Puerto Vallarta

Well spring break has come and gone as we say good bye to the thousands and thousands of young visitors that safely enjoyed Puerto Vallarta. Spring is in the air and summer is around the corner. The water temperatures are inching up daily and the water is clear and green for the most part. We are waiting for the Sailfish to show up and there have been tons of sightings, but no hook-ups I can speak of except the freak occurrence. But the Islands of El Morro and the Marietta Islands are still and luckily for us, the place to be! Snappers, Rooster Fish, Sierra Mackerals and more are the predominant species at the moment, but that is today, it can all change before you finish reading this! For the moment, just say no to Corbeteña and El Banco. The dirty water has moved out and it is clear green water. Not ideal for fishing, but it works as long as the fish can see the bait. There are always Cubera Snappers, Amber Jacks, Rainbow Runners and Jack Crevalls to be had bottom fishing and trolling. But for the most part those coming to Vallarta are not looking to do bottom fishing. In fact they are looking for Yellow Fin Tuna, Sailfish and Marlin, which of course are still out of season. North of Punta Mita, there have been some and I mean some Dorado spotted, even fewer caught. But having said that the ones that are being boated are in the 25 to 40lb range. Good sized and if you are in the area, give it a shot. But don´t make a special trip there unless you´re looking for Rooster Fish. Yes amigos the Rooster fish are gaining in size when you might expect them to fade out. With plenty of bait in the water there is no reason to go looking for greener pastures! 8 hr trips will put you in the thick of things and the conditions are perfect water temperature wise and clear. You will always find Sierra Mackerals there at this time of the year and some other species that are smaller. Head out this direction for the Rooster fish and give the Dorado a shot. Like I said earlier, the Islands are still on fire when it comes to fishing. With Red Snappers taking over El Morro and off the Marietta Islands your blue plate special is waiting to be caught. Snapper are in the 20 to 45lb range (just depends on what is looking at your presentation), Rooster fish are in both locations but seem to be on average larger at El Morro. The upwelling’s and currents around the island favor Rooster Fish pallets with organic ¨stuff¨ being stirred up from the bottom. Experienced Captains know where to go, but watch the water. Upwelling can look like a calm boil where the water is moving but not churning in a circle. Troll around these and anything is possible if you are looking for one of these demons of the ocean!  They´re my favorite fish to catch with the way they attack bait they truly look like something from the depth of the ocean. You´ll also find Jack Crevalls in the 20 to 50lb range, Sierra Mackerals, Cubera snappers on the smaller side of 25lbs but there have been some in the 40lb range. Both Snapper species taste great, so no worries there amigos.

The bay is the bay. There are always fish in the bay. Four and six hour trips can be productive and then again you can come in empty handed. With tourist looking for cheaper boats be sure you have a boat with a fish finder / sounder. If you don´t know where the ridges, reefs and channels are, you will not catch fish.  Saving money on an under equipped boat will cost you the fish you are paying to get. So don´t get scammed by some guy throwing a cheap price at you appealing to your greedy side. There are minimums that you can´t get a round and these cheap boat sellers will tell you whatever you want to hear to sell you that boat. Fresh line, fresh drags, electronics, a series of lures, maintenance, motors, oil and the list goes on.

If you want to catch fish then by all means get the best deal you can get. But don´t step on your trip by not asking the correct questions. When you ask if this boat has electronics, ask them what they mean when they say yes, what electronics exactly they have. You will probably get them to proudly tell you they have a radio and a hand held GPS. If you ask them if they run fluorocarbon leader, they will tell you yes. But you need to ask them how heavy of a leader  they´re running. When they tell you or show you the 400lb s tuff, you might as well be running cable for all it will do you. Line shy fish will see any line over 125lbs. Fluorocarbon leader is designed to be at ten fathoms or about sixty feet down before it is invisible, or as invisible as it will get. Most cheap boats will not have a full time captain or first mate. They will hire the cheapest, not best skilled because they cost  money, captains they can find for the time you will be on the boat  coming in from who knows where. Ask how fast you are going t o be heading out to the fishing grounds. The easiest way to screw clients is to go to the fishing grounds as slow as possible. They will save money, you will lose time with your line in the water, which of course is what you are paying for. Most of these cheap boats are also not insured, ask for proof of insurance or you have none if something happens. The law says here in Mexico that if a person is hurt on your boat or charter that is not insured, the person selling the boat is responsible for t heir lost wages if they cannot work or worse, like having to pay their wages for the rest of their life if they get hurt. Businesses with offices will not put you on a boat you possibly will be hurt on for that reason. These other guys, they will just wait until you go home and will never be able to find them. Also cheap boats are many times a scam that will never show up after you give them a deposit for fishing and tours…. I see this happen every day, I hate having to try and open your mind, but people, at least six groups a week in Marina Vallarta come down to find no boat as they discover that cheap boat was never coming. When you feel like an idiot, you’ll be looking for Master Baiters next time! I get a lot of business like that, so avoid the hassle and the problems that come with greed! As a legitimate business owner, it drives me crazy to have to compete with those who illegally compete with my fishing business and I have never gone after these guys.  The only thing they make money on is tours, so Master Baiter’s is now going into the tour business and we will get you the absolute best prices you can get on Vallarta Adventure tours! As Spring Moves in, Fishing is Up and Down!

The Family Charbonnett with Rooster Fish on Magnifico!

As Spring Moves in, Fishing is Up and Down!

It’s kinda funny how those that are here in Puerto Vallarta during High Season assume this is the best time of the year for fishing here in Puerto Vallarta. While there is never a bad time to go fishing in Puerto Vallarta (PV).  But in fact it is the slowest time for fishing which means the average fish to be caught will be between 15 to 50 pounds. Now if you’re from a place where the fishing is considerably less sizeable, then you’ll have a great time on the water. If you’re a person from a place where you´re used to smaller fresh water fish, then you’ll have great time fishing in the Bay of Banderas. If you are like a few in PV and a fish less than 100 pound won’t grab your interest, then maybe you should wait another month or two before you consider heading out fishing. But be warned, anything can happen at any time, especially at El Banco. So stay tuned as conditions change… You’re best source of information for what is happening on the docks in PV is still this article and my blog…..

The big story this week is the same as it was last week, The Marietta Islands are up one day and down the next. The story of fishing in this area is good and bad. This past week I have sent boats out to see them come in with Rooster fish in the 44 inch range and other larger fish, then the next day come in with nothing. Fishing is fishing we all know that and there is always the chance you will come in with nothing, even with the best captain and best equipped boat. That is why it is important to keep track of the bite times and the bait they are or aren´t taking. The whole game is a moving target where experience and equipment in the right combination will pay off if the fish gods allow it. Those who were up to the challenge this week saw some great pay-offs with large Roosters in the 50 lb range, Snappers in the 35 lb range including Cubera Snappers about the same size. We’ve seen milk fish around the reef which are kinda rare here, but great fighters and can be sizeable at 40lbs. There are also a couple of other fish I can´t even tell you their name, have not seen them here at the islands before, but they fight like demons (see picture).  Live bait works as will lures. Make sure you have some basic lures, diamond jigs, Rapallas, Poppers and some smaller jigs with skirts of Orange, Yellow, Blue and purple in color will do the job.

With few boats heading out to El Banco and Corbeteña, there is little to report. But Sailfish have been sighted but not boated as yet as far as I know. Now that we’ve come into April, it is just a matter of time now before we see this exciting billfish invade the area. Warmer water conditions have drawn them back and other species will follow shortly. Dorado may start moving into the area, but it was July last year before we had the chance to see any that were sizeable. For now, other areas are a better bang for your fuel buck.

Sayulita is still strong, very strong with Rooster Fish in the larger size ranges around the structure. Diamond Jigs and poppers are working well. But there have been long liners out there screwing things up and these guys can be aggressive if you get close to their gill nets or long lines. But this is nothing new.

The Tres Maria Islands have lost their recent popularity as the prison officials have decided to get back to the hard line of enforcing boundary distances. Remember these are prisoners and boats just a short distance off the islands represent a possible threat of escape from the island on conviently placed fishing boats. This area has always been here, yet those who have been around for a while know why we don´t go there. It´s those Cowboy types that want to push the envelope and be reckless with others boats, money and reputation. Be smart and wait for summer when the Yellowfin are at El Banco. This area around the Tres Maria islands is not worth risking your boat and freedom amigos. Just because a few with big ideas are getting fish, it doesn´t mean you have to jump off the cliff with them! Again, this is the reason the old timers shake their heads at those Cowboys as their boats get confiscated.

The bay is still full of Sierra Mackerals and are in different size ranges. If you are near the shore, they are naturally small. Further out, they´re larger and sometimes in the 30 lb range. Large for a Sierra Mackerals! Needle fish, Jack Crevalls, and a series of smaller gamefish are out there. Yet where can be the question. If you hit fish in one place, they probably won´t be there the next day as is the case many times.

3/28/11 UpDate: The currents are acting up again and the water has gotten dirty again as is normal for this time of the year. The Marietta Islands are being patrolled by the navy now and there have been some tickets written, so keep your distance. Snappers have invade El Morro and the Rooster fish in the safe area around the reefs are getting bigger by the day, largest one so far this week is 60 inches and that is five feet long! Water temperatures still hovering in the mid 70’s with plenty of bait in the water. It´s just a matter of time when it all explodes now with summer on its way. Stay tuned for more updates as they´re warranted.

Quickie Report: Very Brief to the Moment.. Spring fishing Up and Down

A friend of mine sent me an email asking what the action was like, he lives in the area so I did not go into much detail, but I realized after wrote him t his brief report, that it said it all with few words so until i finish my latest report, this is what is happening in a nut shell….

Ron , Started seeing some  Roosters of nice size …. 44 inches…    Milk Fish which are strong fighters and in the area which is unusual… Cubera and red snappers, needle fish are moving into the area so the water is warming up… Sailfish off El Banco and they´re right on time….  Gil Netters have surrounded  some areas around the Marietta Islands. It´s funny to hear  commercial fisherman complain about sports fisherman and at times carry guns…vice versa…. but it´s still basically illegal for the both of them to be there fishing in the first place!…..   Dorado near Sayulita but long liners are screwing things up again…. Some Jack Crevalls still …. Fishing is up and down, some days you hit the jack pot , others are tough at best…. Best fishing is still in the 8 hr range, but 4 and 6 hrs has small fish. Bite happening sometimes around 8 right now, but the late day bite is between 12 and 3… Now go get me some pictures to publish amigo!!

Spring Has Sprung, Sailfish Moving In, Water Temps Up!

Spring Has Sprung, Sailfish Moving In, Water Temps Up!
I have to apologize for not posting very many reports during these past weeks as is normal for me, but when things are the same with very little news to report, then those reports sound like a cookie cutter article. It´s no fun to read and no fun to report. But things are moving in the right direction now so you´ll be hearing and seeing more ¨fish porn¨as i LIKE  to call my fish picture gallery postings. But you can rely on at least one article a week with updates as they become pertinent!

As far as I KNOW, I am the only PUBLISHED WRITER (Western Outdoor News  / World Wide Fishing Guide) that reports what the local conditions are as they change. I don´t blow smoke up your butt or mine telling you all how bitchen I am. My job here is to inform and draw attention to Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and to Puerto Vallarta.  You want to hear crowing, it is easy to find on the net!

Now to the report and thanks for reading my humble little fishing blog. if you like it, tell your friends, I have a target of fifty regular readers by the end of the summer.

Cubera Snappers at the Marietta Islands Caught in Policonfondido our panga

Cubera Snappers at the Marietta Islands Caught in Policonfondido our panga

People ask me all the time when the fishing is best in Puerto Vallarta. That is always a moving target because everyone wants a little something different. My standard answer is Mid July to the second week of January. But for some reason people seem to take that as if the fishing is bad any other time. This of course is not the case, but we do know up front that January, February, March and early April are not Billfish months. But we´re in March now, the water is warming up daily, we have seen Sailfish fifty miles out at The Bank or El Banco in Spanish.  There is still plenty of bait in the bay, the water is clearer and bluer every day. Spring is right on time this year with the weather conditions coming in line with expectations and water temperatures moving into the range summer fish prefer! Yes Amigos if you are into fishing, then this is the time of year when things will change for the better. Larger, more abundant gamefish are already here, time to think about your summer fishing trips!

Lots of news this week so lets get this party started! Flash: If you didn’t know from these reports the Marietta Islands are considered protected areas. Those fishing the Marietta islands or the reefs close at hand are basically breaking the law. But like all laws, if there is nobody to enforce them, is it really a law? The answer is yes, it is a law, but when the cat is away….. About once a year the Navy will head out to these islands and the last few days they were enforcing the ¨no fishing zone ¨.  Then, they´re gone and everything goes back to how it was as is the case for now. If you are in the area of the Marietta Islands, there are large Snappers that have been banging on the 30 lb range. Cubera Snappers are up to 40lbs, African Pompano getting less abundant are still in the mid 20’s. Something new is the appearance of larger Needle Fish, Bonito are moving back in and the Jack Crevalls are looking at numbered days since they prefer the cooler water temperatures. Interesting thing, the Rooster Fish are back again, fair sized, but they like structure so they´re at the reefs… same old story. Update 3/22: Rooster Fish (40 lbs plus) have moved in big time into the Marietta Islands and El Morro. African Pompano are back for now in the 25 to 45lb range, Cubera Snappers are now in the 30lb range, there are also Amber Jacks of great size taking bait as well in the 25 to 45lb range (see picture).

Very Nice Sized Amber Jack, Marietta Islands on Policonfondido

Very Nice Sized Amber Jack, Marietta Islands on Policonfondido

The area off Sayulita is still seeing Dorado in the 25 to 40lb range and this should improve. Rooster Fish have been fairly large in the 35lb size range. Snappers on the rocks and structure. African Pompano still there, but not too many and that will change shortly to nothing as the water continues to warm up. This should all improve shortly so stay tuned…

The bay is still full of Jack Crevalls, Needle Fish, Sierra Mackerals, Snappers closer in and a lot of other possibilities if you are interested in a four to six hour trip. Not real large, but you´ll always find action in the Bay of Banderas. So those on a budget, you can still find affordable boats on a vacation budget. Make sure you check my blog for the latest and greatest information.

Corbeteña and El Banco, for now just forget those locations. El Banco is starting to see some Sailfish as they move down from up north. In the next week or two these Sailfish will be setting up house. If you are in the area, Cubera Snappers, Amber Jacks and Rainbow runners are still out there. But most people are not looking to jig or bottom fish.  No Marlin or Tuna to speak of. The Tres Maria islands have been slow. I should say those fishing this location have been staying the legal distance from the Islands, which are a Mexican Prison. Matter what you hear about these islands stay away from them. Those pushing the envelope have been arrested lately and all those bloody decks guys don´t seem to report this fact! So don’t be stupid!

Listen, if you´re in Puerto Vallarta and you´ve been burned by some OPC / Agent / Promoter from the timeshare guys, Vacation ownership is the same animal, then I hate to say this, but you set yourself up to get screwed. With the season being slow, even for High Season as it is now, those OPC’s or Promoters as they like to call themselves are ripping people off left and right. If you decide to go fishing, purchase a tour, or buy anything else from some guy who has no office, no business license, or way to contact them if you need to, then run away from this person. It is illegal for ¨Promoters¨ to sell you anything! But they can give you items, trips, tours, fishing trips for free if you take some of your precious vacation time and attend a ¨vacation ownership¨ presentation. Those that let greed take the driver’s seat are finding they will not be able to find that agent who sold them the Vallarta Adventures tour is nowhere to be found when they discover they got screwed out of their money when the tour company doesn´t have a clue as to who you are. There have been on average of six to ten people a week showing up at the docks in the morning waiting for a fishing boat that is not coming. Vallarta Adventures has had a rash of ¨Promoters¨ stealing deposits in their name as are other tour companies. Please, Please, Please protect yourself by dealing with agents that have hard walls around the office or place of business. Make sure they have a business license, not just some plastic chairs in some open space with a bunch of tour posters scattered around. Master Baiter’s is no going into the tour business and we will get you the absolute best prices you can get on Vallarta Adventure tours! If you go fishing with us, we will get you all the tours you want with discounts that Vallarta Adventures won’t let me advertise. Larger groups will be very happy with the money you´ll save. Lets face it, fishing and tours are expensive.
