Tropical Storm, Soon to be Hurricane Jova Update (10 8 2011), Hurricane Irwin Enters the Picture

Ok, it still looks like we here on the west coast of Mexico need to believe this Tropical Storm is going to turn into a Hurricane sometime today, but it seems to be taking it´s sweet  time in doing so.

All the models I am interested in still shows  the Hurricane coming towards  the Bay of Banderas which of course is where Puerto Vallarta  is.

If you follow my blog, and you have a boat here in Puerto Vallarta  it is important to remember there are things like storm surges that  will raise the level of the water we normally deal with in the Marinas. Ever wonder why those concrete pillars are so high, this is why, so docks don´t break free or come un-hooked and then play bumper boats in hundred mile an hour winds. So if you have a boat and you believe there may be an issue here, it is time to act… You can decide what that means in your case. But in any case, PV is going to get hit with some bad weather. Possible two or god forbid three hurricanes.

Hurricane Jova is the primary threat, it is behind Irwin and Irwin is not moving for nothing. Jova is behind it, running into it, which of course is why Jova is moving erratically. T he pressure systems seem to be showing the two hurricanes turning from Sea and moving towards the coast. There is also another tropical depression nobody is talking about but is sitting quietly, like a lingering tumor you know nothing of as yet and for now we will just  be aware it is there….

OK, so here´s t he beef amigos……

Remember you can subscribe to these  articles I write and get notices and information on what is happening on the docks and in the fishing grounds of Puerto Vallarta. It does not cost a dime and as far as I can see, I am the only  person with this sort of daily or weekly information coming out of Puerto Vallarta.  For my weekly fishing reports, not found here at this location go to my web page  http://www.masterbaiters.com.mx for up to date information without much horn blowing… Hahahaaa…..

OK, look for the next update on the Hurricane situation tomorrow…..

Tropical Storm, Possible Hurricane Jova Sets Its Sights on Puerto Vallarta ( 10/7/11-Day 01)

It seems that every year we have some sort of Hurricane Activity that will threaten a tournament or even more important events like the Pan American Games scheduled to start Oct. 14th to the 30th.The Bisbee´s Fishing Tournament is in two weeks as well….. Bad Timing…

At this moment we have a Tropical Depression that turned into a tropical storm on its way to becoming a Hurricane.

But presently it is still only a Tropical Storm by the name of Jova!  Jova has winds at 55mph to gust  of 70mph which is on the edge of Hurricane Speed. It is also only moving 8 mph in the direction of Puerto Vallarta. Now this can all change rapidly. But the thing that gets my attention is the other Hurricane out there, Hurricane Irwin . The only time we see a real threat to Puerto Vallarta is when there are two hurricanes in tandum, the one on the ¨¨inside´ is always held in towards the mainland. Jova is the inward hurricane locked on an inside track.

This will screw with the fishing and the Marinas of Banderas Bay.

Not much we can do except watch and plan. Those of you in the area pay attention to this site and we´ll see how this all goes..Stay Tuned!

Yellowfin Tuna, Black Marlin, Dorado, Sailfish, Lets go Fishing Amigos, PV has it all!

Yellowfin Tuna, Black Marlin, Dorado, Sailfish, Lets go Fishing Amigos, PV has it all!

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle

For the past several years the Yellowfin Tuna fishing has been less than what we have come to expect from many, many previous years. It used to be there were 250 lb Yellowfin at El Banco and Corbeteña all the time come September in Puerto Vallarta´s fishing grounds. But the last few years we saw the effects of large scale commercial fishing from Mazatlan and the Japanese. These days of Production ships (Seiners) scouring El Banco and Corbeteña have disappeared with hard times and low fishing counts. They essentially put themselves out of business. Now Two years later we are seeing the return of large Yellowfin Tuna within 60 miles of Marina Vallarta. With Marlin and Yellowfin as running mates where you have one, you will normally find the other which is good  news for the fisherman looking to check off another item from his ¨ bucket list¨. Just like days gone by, Puerto Vallarta is once more the place to be for Monster Yellowfin Tuna. Summer is getting on and the best is yet to come, the only thing missing at the fishing grounds is YOU!

Black Marlin 300lbs on Magnifico at Corbeteña

Black Marlin 300lbs on Magnifico at Corbeteña

Like I mentioned, it´s like we´re turning the clock back the way fish are behaving lately. Take inside the bay for instance. Years and years ago it really was not unusual for Marlin to come into the bay. Many people forget for some reason that Marlin love Dorado and will chase them down. Now in the bay near Los Animas on the south end are seeing smaller Marlin chasing down these nice sized Dorado so there have been some real surprises when those fishing with light tackle hook into a good sized Black Marlin. Dorado are not a fish you hear about used for trolling, that is because they die quickly when trolled. But dead Dorado trolled can still work if you have Marlin in the area.

In front of Los Arcos, not far from Marina Vallarta at all, Capt. Cesar took his family fishing and the Dorado pictures are a result of that fishing trip… Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna, Snook at the river mouths. It is really a happening place in the bay right now. If you follow the trash line from this area out to El Morro you can get Sailfish as well. Imagine catching all of this in less than six hours in the bay.

Moving out to the points, Punta Mita is on automatic. Sailfish, Dorado, Roosters near Sayulita, the reefs are alive at Anclote and many are still targeting this area as their first choice heading out in the morning. There is no way you can go wrong with an eight hour day in this area.

The Marietta Islands have fish, they always have fish. But when they have the same fish in close, why head out there? Well for one reason Sailfish love this area and the area between Corbeteña and the Marietta Islands have been ignored making this area a untouched opportunity. If you are heading out past the Marietta Islands drop a few baits and see what is happening, may just surprise you with some Black Marlin and closer in sizeable Yellowfin Tuna, wouldn`t be the first time this happened!

Dorado Everywhere including Los Arcos where this was caught by Capt. Cesar

Dorado Everywhere including Los Arcos where this was caught by Capt. Cesar

The real deal this past week continues to be Corbeteña. I mean the Rock is on fire and with no crowds you can linger and let the bite happen instead of trying to hurry things before some other boat moves in to your ¨space¨ trying to get your fish! You name it, Marlin in the 300 to 700lb range with possibilities of larger, much larger at this time of the year. Yellowfin Tuna anywhere from 60 to over 250lbs. Magnifico boated a Black Marlin and just when the Marlin started jumping less than thirty feet from the boat, all of a sudden Yellowfin of 250 lbs were hurling themselves from the water to the point it looked like they were flying Volkswagens! So Buckwheat, you ever catch a fish bigger than your car!! It could happen amigos! Large sailfish, even the Dorado here are in the 35 to 50 lbs. I mean you could not ask for better conditions. With deep blue water and perfect water temperatures of 84 Degrees fantasies can come true RIGHT NOW!  Here´s a secret, if you are not running Google Eyes, smaller Sardines or Bonito you will not be catching anything. Plastics stopped working this week, you`ve been informed now use this information wisely grasshopper!

Sailfish like this one at Punta Mita make 8 hr trips worth while!

Sailfish like this one at Punta Mita make 8 hr trips worth while!

El Banco, this place has been dead, dead, dead… But there is now some signs of life, nothing spectacular but still a weak pulse of sorts. Yellowfin of 60 to 80 lbs have turned up in the Green Water out there. Why it is green water, your guess is as good as mine. But if you have bullet Bonito baits, small babies, The Yellowfin will hit it hard. But if you are running any other bait, forget about it, you will never know there was a fish around. No Marlin, No Sailfish and no Dorado. If all you are going to get is smaller, fickle Yellowfin why spend the extra fuel cost on a more distant location.

So here we go again, another week with perfect conditions, plenty of bait, blue water and large amounts of Trophy Game Fish! Uncrowded fishing grounds, cheap hotel prices, and over 12 pesos to the dollar means Puerto Vallarta is a bargain.

Remember mid November this year will be when the 56th Annual Pez Vella and Marlin tournament will be happening. So make your mind up to participate. You can get all the information you need at: www.fishvallarta.com .

Well that is the latest and greatest for now. Stay tuned and watch my blog for on the deck and breaking news and even some fish porn (safe for your 12 yr old) pictures of naked fish!

Dorado Invade Puerto Vallarta´s Fishing Grounds, Uncrowded Perfect Conditions Hold True!

Dorado Invade Puerto Vallarta´s Fishing Grounds, Uncrowded Perfect Conditions Hold True!

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle

When summer or High Season for fishing in Puerto Vallarta comes anything is not only possible, but probable. It seems that every year for the last three yea s we have seen the arrival in mass on Dorado later and later in the fishing season.  Last year it was July before the Dorado massed in number, this year it´s early September. Now there have been Dorado in our fishing grounds, but the numbers were less than impressive. That has all changed now and Dorado are essentially on tap at all the fishing grounds where you would expect to see them. From Yelapa to Corbeteña, you will find something sizeable and edible for the dinner table, and I am not talking about your boot amigo!

Monster Dorado at Corbeteña

Monster Dorado at Corbeteña

With PV moving into high gear as the season progresses nicely, Dorado are the story this week. So let’s just jump to the subject. Everywhere from Yelapa in the bay to Corbeteña thirty five miles out from Marina Vallarta, you will find Dorado for the dinner table amigos. Nothing special here to know, all you need to do is have some poppers handy, some Google Eyes on hand and you can come in with fish, a lot of fish , within reason of course and with the regulations in mind amigos! But there is a lot more than just Dorado in the bay for those looking for some affordable fun or you want to head out for Moby Dick, no matter what you are looking for, this is the time of year to find it!

Corbeteña has been the place to be for the last three weeks or so. With every Trophy Fish Puerto Vallarta has to offer with Black Marlin lagging a little. So what do you want, Blue Marlin to 600 lbs, Yellowfin Tuna averaging 175 lbs. with Monsters in the area. Dorado now are in the 40 to 50 lb range and hungry. Sailfish are here as well and getting more and more abundant by the day.  Clean, clear and blue water in the 84 degree area is just what the fishing gods ordered. Those heading out looking for Tuna need to remember to keep an eye on the moon phase. Full moons are for fishing early or late bites. But mid day will most likely be disappointing. For some reason we are not seeing any issue with the moon phase with Marlin or Sails. Or any other species or trophy game fish at the rock. The really nice thing is that the Rock is deserted. If you see five boats out there it would be considered crowded! No worries of overcrowding chasing fish down or out.

Yellowfin Tuna, 70lbs at Corbeteña

Yellowfin Tuna, 70lbs at Corbeteña

El Banco, just say no to El Banco until somebody comes in with some fish. A couple of boats headed out to the high spots, got a couple of bites, no hook-ups. Don´t know what the deal with El Banco is, but then again do any of us really know anything in the world of Deep Sea Fishing. Just keep your ears open and your fuel tank full, these conditions here cannot last much longer amigos.

Not many heading out to the Marietta Islands this past week once more. Seems those heading out are going in other directions. But there are always Skip Jack Tuna, Bonito, Rooster Fish; Needle fish (False Marlin), Snappers, Dorado (now) and the list goes on. For the fuel dollar Punta Mita is probably a better idea, for this moment anyway….

Punta Mita is a Dorado Machine right now. It really doesn`t matter what you are running for bait, they will hit it harder than my wife used to hit her Nordstrom’s Credit Card at their annual sale! Dorado from 20 to 35 lbs, Sailfish in the 80 to 100 lb range and a fair shot at a Rooster Fish near Sayulita makes this area perfect for those looking for a shorter day of 8 hrs and a pay off in your limit on Dorado! For those of you wondering where these gold and blue beauties have been, well we know where they are now! So get off your duffs and take advantage of this before things change… and they always change amigos.

For anyone hearing there are no fish in the bay from promoters trying to get you to spend more money, walk away from these guys. The Trash line is only out to the Yelapa area with the rains being a little sparse for the last few weeks means the bay is accomadating. This means Dorado, Skippies (Skip Jack Tuna), Football Tuna, even some small Sailfish are just at the south end of the bay waiting for you to put something in front of them!! They will hit just about anything, so you don´t need to be a rigging genius, just flip a popper, diamond jig, Rapalla, hell use your car keys with a hook, it will all work well. For the few times when the bay is like fishing in a barrel, this is where we are now. For those out there looking at some dirty water, it may be bad for swimming or snorkeling, but the fish and many of us also know that this dirty water many, many times can be from a few inches to a few feet thick. Not hard to overcome. I suggest running a planer about two to three feed down, run from the clear side of the t rash line into the dirty water and see if you get a hit.

So there you have it, the latest and the greatest when it comes to fishing here in Puerto Vallarta. The fishing is great, plenty of fish or all species. Perfect water conditions, hungry fish, uncrowded, I mean what more can you ask for… well free fuel would be nice, but highly unlikely this fantasy will ever happen… Ha Ha Ha…. For those with the time, the money and the inclination Puerto Vallarta fishing is coming into its own right now. The only thing missing is you!

Until next time, don`t forget to kiss your fish!

Update, illegal Master Baiter’s Closes, but web page still up for now

Update, illegal Master Baiter’s Closes, but web page still up for now

For many, there has been questions about Master Baiter´s and now there are finally some answers I can give you to clear up the confusion.

First, I have control of the trade marks now for Master Baiter´s. I always did, but was challenged by the woman who had a franchise to u s and sold clothing with Master Baiter´s logo on it…. One day when I told Magda Pierda that I now had the trade marks in my name since my brother had abandoned the store and left me with all  his debt.

Magda Piedra told me to go screw myself and that she was going to use MY LEGAL TRADE MARK if I liked it or not…. My brother had the rights to the web site, so he essentially gave her the web site I had rescued. This is why the other MBaiters was rated higher than my http://www.masterbaiters.com.mx site.

When I discovered she was telling clients that she was in fact ME, this is when the issue started. Magda Piedra filed papers with IMPI the trade mark arm of the mexican govt and then the shit began. She had essentially lied to the courts and the courts found in her favor making it look like I was this rich gringos guy trying to push a poor Mexican Female out of business. When I appealed with my attorney the judgement was given to me, Stan Gabruk who legally and rightfully owns the trade mark.

Stan Gabruk in front of Master Baiter´s shop on the boardwalk in Marina Vallarta

Stan Gabruk in front of Master Baiter´s shop on the boardwalk in Marina Vallarta

Once it became obvious that she had lost the trade marks, she closed her down town store down and left for Cancun. She is still there with her husband Sasha who happens to be working at the Buena Ventura Hotel…

Under Mexican Law, she is in deep problems, she first lied to the court, which is serious and we proved it. She then put up a web page meant to fool people into thinking they were indeed me… She slandered my company  the whole way and she is now on the run. The web page is not yet closed down, I am trying to get the page and have it all forwarded to my web site so it does not matter which site you go to, they come to me…..

Our Origional Design, Nostalgic and still a big seller

Our Origional Design, Nostalgic and still a big seller

The long and short of it is that my brother John Gabruk is not involved with the company on any level now and will never be a representative of this company again.  The Master Baiter´s reputation has been restored and the company is in the same situation as the rest of the city as we struggle to get through some tough times as the  American press tells the public that it is dangerous to come to Mexico. This of course is a BIG FAT LIE, but fear works and the Obama administration through the liberal press is attacking Mexico to keep your tourism dollars at home by putting the fear of god into those thinking or Mexico for a vacation spot… but this is another story…

Magda is now responsible for 60% of every peso she made using my trade marks. She is also liable under the courts for damages, which can be six times the amount of the money she made, plus paying the outrageous legal fees I have for this fiasco.

So there you go folks, you will have to wait for the book to get the whole story, but for now there is only one Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle in Puerto Vallarta and that is in Marina Vallarta amigos… The web page is still up, we have to go through the legal process again, but this is a no brainer now and we will be marching down these legal paths as fast as Mexican Law can move…..

To those Bloody Decks guys that still spew lies on the site, Master Baiter´s is still the premier fishing company in Puerto Vallarta. The only company with the balls to offer  a 30% Money Back Guarantee if you come in with no game fish on full priced charters! Master Baiter´s is now and always has been willing to take the chance with you that you could come in sin fish! If we return the money, if you came back with no fish, you only pay for the cost of operation amigos. Nobody who you read about or who is blowing smoke up each others backside has the balls to do this and never will! So F-Ck YoU bLoOdY dIcKs…. when it comes to Vallarta you all are just little liars who think you actually have some sort of lock on the fishing market. For the record I was banned from Bloody Decks after I threatened to hit them with a law suit after this Drew Guy, a prominent figure on the PV side said I was stealing deposits… You never  heard of the issues being taken care of, that would go against their plan.

I took over the company in the thick of this mess and turned it around. I still have great boats with English-speaking captains working for  me. So stay tuned for up coming notices and keep an eye on my web page http://www.masterbaiters.com.mx for updates on what the real deal is on Puerto Vallarta.

Three years ago there were like 25 owner operated fishing companies in PV, today there are like 5, 2 of which are setting fishing trip prices below their cost. Clients come in to us and want to compare prices, I tell them that the price they are quoting me is impossible and less than what it cost for the boat to operate. These greedy clients then go back the CHEAP provider, give him half the money down for the fishing trip (which should be a clue) and then the morning of the trip, no boat, no agent and when they look for this person, he is gone like a ghost. The other people working in that location, they don´t have a clue as to where this cockroach is, what would you expect. These clients then come in and tell me how they got screwed , after I told them what the real deal was. I tried to tell them and others of the situation, but it sounds like I am cutting down the competition. When it comes to reputable companies either brokering or owner operators, I have no problem. When the local govt does not police the timeshare industry or pirates roaming the Marina, then business is doomed as we are now…..

So to sum things up, Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle is still standing and still providing superior service to past and future clients. You can find my Facebook page under the name MasterBaiter Stan for now. I have over 3,000 friends who are interested in the game of fishing from a professional perspective and amateurs alike. It is my goal to make my FBook site a real social networking site where you can type in a question and someone will get an answer to you…. so hit me up amigos…..Facebook: MasterBaiter Stan … I will be looking to hear from you.

Remember, if you are not talking with Stan Gabruk personally, you are not dealing with Master Baiter´s. If you come to Marina Vallarta and ask for Master Baiter`s,   who ever you are talking with will tell you I am dead, out of business or  point you in the wrong direction. This is competition in Mexico for you….

Now that I am at the point where I can put this legal battle behind me, I will be looking for another shop in Marina Vallarta where I will get back into Tackle, Tours, Clothing and of course fishing. Feel free to call or contact me on any subject about Puerto Vallarta…

Remember, At master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle, We Won´t Jerk You Around!

Until Next  Time, this is Stan Gabruk welcoming your questions and business…….. And Don´t Forget to Kiss Your Fish!

Puerto Vallarta Fishing is Explosive, This is PV At its Best!

Puerto Vallarta Fishing is Explosive, This is PV At its Best!

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle

Right now it´s like fishing in a bucket, you name the fish you are targeting and I will tell you how to get to them. I know that makes me sound like a genius, but in reality any idiot with a fishing pole and a boat can come in these days with something you can be proud of.  Dead locations like the Marietta Islands have come to life. Areas that were slow at best have picked up this week with Sailfish, Dorado and Rooster fish. You want big fish for a trophy? You want smaller fish the kids can catch and not spend too much time on the water under an Equator Sun? Or how about heading out to El Banco where Yellowfin Tuna in the 80 to 200 lb range and are as thick as ants, a direct quote from Capt. Cesar of Magnifico about fishing this week? No matter what you are looking for when it comes to World Class Sportfishing, we have it in Spades! Fishing just turned into Catching. The only thing missing now is YOU!

Rooster Fish at Punt Mita, Capt Tory, 59inch Rooster fish, 8 hrs

Rooster Fish at Punt Mita, Capt Tory, 59inch Rooster fish, 8 hrs

Every week I look at what is happening in Marina Vallarta and see the results of different fishing boats here in Puerto Vallarta´s fishing grounds. When we hit this time of the year we don´t have to look too far to see something impressive fish wise.  Yellowfin Tuna are on the docks every afternoon, Along with Sailfish, Dorado, even Rooster Fish. If you are one of those who ignored the B.S. the press is spewing in North America, then you are one of the very few who are here in PV to enjoy next to perfect conditions. To hammer this home, the fishing is now better than anything I have seen in the last three years. We all know what the situation is in up north across the border. But the fish don´t know anything about that and are going about their daily business as normal, which of course means chasing bait balls and growing in size!!

One location that has been less than spectacular is El Banco ( or The Bank in English). All of a sudden Yellowfin Tuna have moved into the area and you can expect to hook into one of these Yellowfin Beauties over and over again. Multiple hook-ups are a no brainer, so don´t run too many lines or it will be to your detriment amigo. 80 to 200 lb Yellowfin, Black Marlin from 200 to 600 lbs, even Dorado up to 50 lbs. Sailfish, Cubera Snappers, you name it. They are attacking anything, you don´t even need bait, they`ll hit a shinny hook. So don´t worry what type of bait or how you present it, they don´t care, they will take any bait that looks like something they would like! Start at the high spots, then head southwest about four miles and you are in the right place to catch that finned fantasy!

Corbeteña is still smoking hot amigos.  Yellowfin Tuna are here as well, but not quite as big as El Banco in the 30 to 100 lb range. Now we all know these fish move and this could change tomorrow so check the locations to see what news is coming in before you make a fuel decision. I prefer Corbeteña simply for its flexibility in species and closeness to other spots like El Morro and the Marietta Islands. With plenty of Skippies in the area bait is not a problem. Large Sailfish are thick right now, you have Blue and Black Marlin to 600 lbs, Dorado larger than 35lbs, Yellowfin Tuna as we just mentioned. Cubera Snappers, I mean the place is on fire! Don´t wait, get your butts out there now.

El Morro, another place I have not mentioned in a while has Sailfish, Dorado, Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna, and the list goes on. You can cookie cutter the same for the Marietta Islands. With a little luck you will see some Rooster fish, but nothing you can predict.

Punta Mita has gotten even better after a slow start to the season. Six miles off the point there are Sailfish everywhere. No secrets on the baits, just get something in front of them, they`ll take it.  Dorado is getting more abundant in what is normally a heaven for Dorado. Capt. Tory of Bella Del Mar even came in with a 59 inch Rooster Fish, one of the biggest I have ever seen, but not quite a record. Close and full of fish is a money saving proposition for those who want to stay married. A super panga will put you and three of your friends out for eight hours, cheaper than golf in PV for sure.

Graham Landrith, Carlo Dominquez, and Jack Pardo came in with this nice Sailfish off Punta Mita

Sailfish off Punta Mita, Graham Landrith, Carlo Dominquez,, 8 hrs on Bella Del Mar

Inside the bay we always have challenges to deal with come summer time. People don´t understand that the water coming down from the hills is one thing that may look unsightly, but it is like a vitamin pill for the bay with nutrients. The trash line is a place I have written about again and again. The trash line can make your four hour day feel like an eight hour day with the amount of action right now. Find a trash line in the bay and you will find Dorado to 25 lbs, Bonito, and a host of other players.  This is like a McDonalds for these fish, fast food and well worth the price. This is a great option for those looking for something they can eat and still keep things on the cheap….

Water conditions couldn´t be more perfect. Once you get out past the dirty water that we have in the bay, it gets Deep and dark blue. Water temperatures are hovering in the perfect range (84 to 86 degrees), nothing in the 90 degree range like we have seen in the last few freaky years. Plenty of bait everywhere makes it easy to make bait for your tuna tubes. So conditions could not be better amigos.

OK, Tourism is down, way, way down. If you can get past the regurgitated stories of how drug cartels are taking over Mexico and listen to those who live in the real Mexico, not Juarez, then you will have the fishing grounds all to yourself. There are very few boats heading out in the morning. It´s always good to compare prices, but make sure when you are comparing boats, you are comparing apples to apples. Better boats will never be cheap. You will never get more than you pay for.  Be careful that you are getting or wind up expecting something completely different than that twenty year old picture you were shown. You may wind up disappointed when you walk up to this slow boat from China!!

Jack Crevalls and the boys, same day, same place

Jack Crevalls and the boys, same day, same place

So conditions are about as good as you will get in summer if you are interested in Big Game or Deep Sea fishing in Puerto Vallarta. Sport fishing companies are doing what they can to hold the line on prices. But as in the states and the rest of the world fuel prices have increased dramatically as well here in Mexico. But losing money is no way to stay in business so I suggest making late summer reservations as soon as possible and lock in the better prices before everyone raises prices, including myself.  That is if you are coming down to do some High Season Fishing!

For those of you thinking of entering our local tournaments from Barra to Manzanillo, Master Baiter’s Captains are the best in Puerto Vallarta with many being multi-tournament winners. We keep our prices down as much as possible for tournaments because we like to be in the action too! So if saving some money and not paying double the regular price of a charter per day appeals to you, then contact me about the tournament you are interested in and we will fix you up with tried and true captains, boats and crews with fresh line, top notch equipment and tackle and of course English speaking, professional crews of course! Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish, Cubera Snappers, Corbeteña Explodes!

Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish, Cubera Snappers, Corbeteña Explodes!

Written by Stan Gabruk, owner Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle

We wait all year for August to bring with it Monster Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish and more. Those that have the money, the time and the inclination will find everything they are looking for when it comes to Trophy Gamefish here in Puerto Vallarta´s world famous fishing grounds. For the last three years we have been stuck with unusual weather conditions due to El Nino and the following year, last year, buy El Nina. Extreme water temperature fluctuations have subsided finally this year. As a result we are seeing places like Corbeteña, one of the hot spots for sure, explode with what serious Deep Sea or Sports fisherman are looking for. If you were asked to describe the perfect conditions you would hope to experience while going after huge Game Fish, then this is the time to be here in Puerto Vallarta! The only thing missing at our fishing grounds is you! High season for fishing has taken a great leap forward this week, so hang tight, the fishing just got great!

Cubera Snapper at Corbeteña

Cubera Snapper at Corbeteña

This week we have seen sleepy Corbeteña wake up and Roar!  Thirty five miles out from Marina Vallarta is Corbeteña, also referred to as the rock. With a rock in the middle, deep Chanels and volcanic structure Corbeteña is the most versatile fishing site we have in Puerto Vallarta. We have been seeing large numbers of Yellowfin Tuna in the 25 to 200lb range for weeks now, but getting them to take your bait was not easy. Changing baits every twenty minutes hoping to tease these elusive Yellowfin Tuna was work and no two baits would work twice in a row. Frustrating for sure, but this has changed. One good thing about fishing, it won´t be bad for long. My glass is always half full when it comes to fishing! Right now Yellowfin are finally taking Skippies. Skippies refer to Skip Jack Tuna or small Yellowfin Tuna and right now that   is about all they want. Now for some reason Dead bait (Skippies) are working well, in fact to be exact, fresh dead bullet Skippies of about five pounds and dead Google Eyes are your best option. Now lures are working also, but if you come across a boil a surface popper or surface Iron like a diamond jig will all work. So try those first before you go to kites and other methods of getting Yellowfin Tuna to come!

There is also larger Black and Blue Marlin hitting baits, but not exactly hitting every bait. Lots of Black Marlin strikes, but few being boated for some reason, we´ll blame the angler here. Once they are on the line, it is normally slack that is the reason they get away. So remember, tight lines are a common term, but a line with slack in it will result in spit hooks! And who goes out to lose Moby Dick? So keep the pressure on amigos, it will make the difference. Oh, Marlin are in the 450 t o 650 lb. range right now and will gradually increase in size as we sink deeper into the summer season. Stay tuned!

Sailfish, yes I said Sailfish are getting more abundant by the day. Corbeteña is full of them and they are running in the 95 to about 120lb range, large for Sailfish for sure! They are a lot late, but we`ll count our blessings and be glad we have them around. Same goes for bait with them, as with the Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna.

An unexpected surprise is the abundance of Cubera Snappers in the 60 to 80lb range. Now they love the volcanic structure around Corbeteña but will school and attack surface baits. They fight like a Sailfish, but taste much, much better. You bring some of that fish to Victors Café Te Cuba in Marina Vallarta, tell them Master Baiter´s Stan sent you and sit back,  You will have a meal cooked four or five different ways fresh off the boat . It doesn’t get any better than that amigos! Me, I would rather have Cubera Snapper for dinner, Sails, they need to be released for sure!

Yellowfin Tuna Monsters on High Maintenance

Noticeably absent is Dorado, why, who knows. Fish come and they go, but for now they are not hanging around the Rock. Now this will change twenty minutes after this article is written, but that is fishing for you. Keep your ears on and it won´t be but a few days and it will all change for the better on these species. If you are looking for these great tasting fish, I suggest in the bay and the 20 to 30 pounders if you are lucky enough to find them. Look for floating logs or anything smaller fish can hide and you will find Dorado… this will change soon so stay tuned.

The Marietta islands are being ignored. With Corbeteña, Punta Mita and the bay firing on all cylinders, there is little need to take a chance when there are some hot locations you don´t have to guess about. It all comes down to the fuel dollar and what you are willing to spend to find that finned fantasy of a life time! Decisions, decisions, but don´t ask the wife what you should spend your fuel money on, she`ll tell you a new purse for her!! Been there, done that, got the T-shirt!

I know I just spent some time discussing Corbeteña, but no mention of El Banco. The reason for that is I have no reports from El Banco! It may be every bit as good as Corbeteña, but it is farther out by 15 miles or so and with the cost of fuel getting more expensive by the day, 15 miles in and then double that for a round trip, you just saved yourself some dinero amigo! Always a concern in these days of shrinking fun money…. Or if you prefer, disposable income.

Another area I have not talked much about is the point off Punta Mita!  Normally by this time of the year this location is a Sailfish machine. Well it has been anything but a machine up until now, but this area has exploded as well. Sailfish are about seven miles off the point and they are abundant. For the guy with 8 hrs to spend, this is a perfect place to target! Same deal with bait, dead Skippies and Google eyes, as well as a few lures will get them striking all over the place. Just remember to release the babies, I don`t need to see any juvenile Sailfish or Marlin on the docks just for a picture, do that out there and release the babies. In case you have not heard diminishing populations of fish are not the result of the Sport fisherman, but we need to do our part and that starts with caring. That means when the captain kills the billfish, even if he knows you want to release the fish, then don´t tip him. He is coming in and planning on selling your fish to make ends meet which means you just subsidized his income and paid for his business day! Remember, it is illegal for sport fishing companies to sell fish commercially.

Sayulita and Guyavitos are seeing Rooster fish, but not in huge numbers. For those in the La Cruz marina or on the beaches in the Punta Mita area, it may be worth your time and effort.

Inside the bay it is still Football season as in Football Yellowfin Tuna to 40lbs. Some days they are around the trash line, other days they are chasing bait around the bay. And still others are in the shallows or near structure like rock jetties. Bonito, Needle fish, Skip Jack Tuna and Dorado are in the bay as well. Anywhere between Cabo Corrientes and Punta Mita is alive with action so listen to the radio on the way out in the morning.

I know this article is on the positive side, but I have been waiting for conditions like this since February! Right now you will find blue water just three miles off the point of Punta Mita all the way to the deep water fishing grounds of Punta Mita and Corbeteña. I mean deep, deep blue! Water temperatures are great if not perfect at 86 degrees. When it rains in the morning or while fishing, the Yellowfin Tuna have been coming up to enjoy the ¨sweet¨ water and freshness of the cooler water on the surface. The rain hitting the water always gets fish excited. You see they think it is bait fish returning back into the water after trying to leap to safety! So they like the freshness, the temperature and they like to be fooled! Casting a surface popper will drive them Crazy to get to your bait. So keep this information handy and to yourself amigo. Rain is the fisherman’s friend so don`t let little things like rain keep you from boating that bucket list fish you always dreamed about!

So conditions are about as good as you will get in summer if you are interested in Big Game or Deep Sea fishing in Puerto Vallarta. Prices on charter boats are doing their best to hold even with the raising fuel cost like in the states. But losing money is no way to stay in business so I suggest making late summer reservations as soon as possible and lock in the better prices before everyone raises prices, including myself.

Master Baiter’s is starting a new fishing program for those  who want to go fishing when in Puerto Vallarta, but find it hard to squeeze it in when it comes time to make sure they are all having fun. So what my plan is, is to take payments and apply this money to your fishing trip when you come down, when ever that is. Here is the concept, Fishing is expensive and getting more expensive every day with fuel, maintenance cost, salaries and the list goes on. What I am in the process of now is setting up an investment account where I will deposit your money, in your name, and when you do come down, whatever amount you have in your account will go towards your fishing trip. Send a little, send a lot, don´t send anything. But whatever you send forward by week or month, this money is there so you don ´t have to take the hit to your vacation budget for taking a fishing trip. This way you don`t have to feel guilty if the family doesn´t get that tour in or your wifey doesn´t get that new outfit. This way they get what they want and you as the responsible ¨provider¨ can still go fishing and not even notice the money is gone. So smart planning will always make your life easier…  If there is excess money in an account, you can always pull it out or pay it forward to the next trip. Kinda like a lay-away plan for fishing. If you are interested in something of this nature, feel free to contact me at: www.catchfish@masterbaiters.com.mx and we`ll fix you up…..
