Marlin, Tuna, Dorado, Thank You El Nino

Marlin, Tuna, Dorado, Thank You El Nino

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

I know this is a strange title, but it´s accurate and appropriate. While El Nino will present problems for fishing come September, for now we´re seeing summer species in the dead of winter. Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Rooster fish, Snappers, Jack Crevalls and the incredible list just goes on. Unusually warm water temperatures will remain with us until summer, this means that out of season species will be available to those who will never be here in the heat of summer. This is a genuine opportunity to boat a bucket list fish and still be comfortable. For those with the time, money and frankly the luck to be here in Puerto Vallarta, you have a chance to experience world class fishing in the best possible conditions. If this doesn´t get your heart beating you better change the battery in your pace maker!02 14 2014 Tom Robinson, Guanatuna, 80 lb Amber Jack on gaff 600 pxls wText

Before I get started, no matter where you head out to, you will catch your fill of fish. Bait is abundant to the tenth power. Water temperatures are still running in the early summer ranges of 79 to 81 degrees (No kidding). And the water conditions of Blue / Blue water are just like summer at the deep water locations. For those in the know, you will never find conditions like this in late February unless El Nino is pushing the currents.

As mentioned last week, the area between the Marietta Islands to Corbeteña, then over to El Banco (The Golden Triangle) has turned into a fish producing machine. It´s incredible, just off the Marietta Islands we´re seeing everything! Rooster fish are running in the 35 to 50 lb plus range and they´re taking anything shiny. Baits, lures, your car keys, put a hook on it and throw it in, it´s so easy it´s almost scary. Dorado, yes I said Dorado in the 25 to 40 lb range. Bonito running 30 to 45 lbs, Cubera Snappers and Amber Jacks in excess of 50 lbs (jig baits for larger fish). Black Marlin in the 300 lb plus range, Blue Marlin in the 250 lb range and Striped Marlin in the 200 lb range. If you´re not saying ¨WoW¨ by now, you should be. For your fuel dollar this is the best bet. Throw in the Whales and the ability to do some snorkeling on Magnifico and you have a ¨full Meal Deal¨ that comes with your day on the water.02 26 2014 Ferguson Group, Magnifico, 8 hrs, 50 lb Rooster 600 Pxls

Corbeteña has blue squared water conditions. Perfect water temps and plenty of bait. The results of these unusually perfect fishing conditions are Black Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado to 50 lbs, Bonito, Jack Crevalls of course, large Cubera Snappers, Amber Jacks, Rainbow Runners and the list goes on. Well worth your fuel dollar, but Corbeteña is in the Golden Triangle so it´s part of the mix. Can´t say enough good things about Corbeteña right now.

The same pretty much goes for El Banco, All species of Marlin, Dorado at 50 plus pounds, Sailfish, Jack Crevalls of course and Yellowfin Tuna running with Spinner Dolphin the YF tuna are in the 80 to 120 lb range like last week. Now before you get all excited and head to the high spots the YF Tuna have not exactly been taking baits for the few days we ran into them this last week. It´s strange to see 80 plus Yellowfin Tuna run with Spinner Dolphin like this, although it is a welcome surprise. This will last only a few days at most, so hang in there and check back later. Bait is amazing, a swath of ten square blocks of Skip Jack Tuna (Skippies) will blow your mind as you see these world class fish just slashing through this WalMart Sized bait ball! The Tuna by the way are 16 to 20 miles north of El Banco to be more specific.

Inside the bay, four or six hours is perfect for the person who has time on his mind and doesn´t want to be on the water all day. For you we´ve got some serious arm burning action. Jack Crevalls (of course), bonito, Skip Jack Tuna, Needle fish, Sierra Mackerals and the list is never ending. You´ll have a great day and four hours is just perfect for the younglings.10 04 2013 Shannon Trahan, Magnifico, 001a

We do have one small problem I am sure you can appreciate. That problem is the bait you run needs to be larger than three inches or the bait will take your bait! No kidding, you need to run at least six inch baits to get larger fish or the bait fish will eat your bait. It´s an interesting problem we can live with! As far as baits to run, again lures larger than three inches in length. Google Eyes, Rangers, Poppers, Skippies, these fish will hit just about anything presented to them. It reminds me of my ex wife and the shoe sale at Nordstroms, these fish are in a frenzy and they can´t get enough of what you have to offer amigo, so get out there!

Bait Disappears, Whales Return, Lures Working!

Bait Disappears, Whales Return, Lures Working!

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

Every year at the beginning of December we see the Whales return to spawn as the bait runs for the hills. If that´s not bad enough, the Spinner Dolphin are in the area and instead of hanging out with Football Sized Tuna, they´re eating football sized tuna. So your bait, which is hard enough to make is not safe from the Spìnners! Seems like a problem. But the fish are still here, hungry for anything that mimics a bait. For you guys with those hundred dollar lures that promise to work so well, now´s your chance to put them to the test, if you´re not afraid of losing that ¨oh so pretty lure¨! Blue, silver and purple combinations are knocking them dead out there. What you don´t know this week will hurt your chances amigo, what you do know will make your day!06 17 2011 Michelle Stewart Crosby with Yellowfin Tuna, El Banco, Animal House, 12hr day 003 RedPIx 480

First, small fish all over the bay, especially where ever the Whales aren´t.  Now I love the Whales like everyone else until they chase the bait out and we´re left lacking for their presence. I know, I sound like my ex-wife and we can´t have that. Mucho Bonito around the bay, water temps are still perfect so anything is possible and available. Closer to shore is not a bad thing as late, structure is your friend. Snappers, Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna, Small Grouper, and the list goes on. Snook is still at the river mouths and Dorado, while sparse are sprinkled throughout the bay. For the fly fishing guy, we´ve got perfect sized fish for a 8 wt. Great days for kids at four hours or less with our special…. Sailfish, 10-6-10

The Marietta Islands have kinda churned to not exactly a halt, but it´s not exactly pumping out fish like we´re used to. Again, the Whales are a convenient excuse so we´ll blame them. Still, Sailfish are thick and available closer to El Morro toward the golden triangle. Marlin are not exactly abundant, but there are hook-ups every day in this area as well. Dorado is in the 25 to 35 lb size range. Skip Jack Tuna to 35 lbs, Bonito to 30 lbs, Snappers to 35 lbs, it´s like a 35 pound club out there! Still with the time and fuel dollar… Just keep your ears on for news of improvement and then jump on it.11 30 2011 4 hrs No

The REAL action this week was at Corbeteña. Water Temperatures are perfect 82 degrees, the water has never been bluer, calm seas, it´s just perfect except for one thing, THE SPINNERS! Now Spinner Dolphin are normally our friends since they hang with fifty pounder Tuna. But when they´re on the smaller side, they have no problem eating their smaller brethren!  Now these are Einstein fish. They know exactly how far up your bait to eat and not get hooked! When there is little bait to speak of, this will drive you crazy and while it seems kinda cool in the beginning. It´s not so cool when you have no more bait and the wrong color on your lures… if they work at all. We´re seeing some action though, the fishing is good, not fantastic, but somewhere in between good and great. If it´s action you want, Marlin in the 400 to 700 lb range are in the area, not abundant, but you´ll have a shot. Sailfish, they´re on tap everywhere and will be until the water gets cold. Yellowfin Tuna in the 80 to 125 lb range are also in the area, but you´ll have to use  your lucky charms on some days. Still, heading northwest from the rock out to as far as fifteen miles, you´ll find tuna. That is if you´re a mind to do such a thing like I would. Wahoo in the 120 lb range have been in the area with several reports of these monsters boated. Remember, their mouth is like a Ginsu Knife and will cut through wire leaders, imagine what they do to mono? So if you´re lucky and trolling a little fast, you´ve got a nice shot. Dorado, Yes we have Dorado amigo and they´re running in the 50 to 65 lb range for the moment, cross your fingers this continues. All and all, if you´re looking for fish go to Corbeteña. El Banco, Wahoo, Marlin, Sailfish, same here at Corbeteña and closer. A better choice for now. Oh, the bite…. You´ll start seeing more hits about 9 to 12 in the day… The late bite is like 3 in the afternoon right now. Put that in your back brain pocket.

Great Fishing, Perfect Conditions, It´s Fish City

Great Fishing, Perfect Conditions, It´s Fish City

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

Once more I am happy to report that the fishing is outstanding, the conditions are perfect, air temperatures are dropping by the day, Plenty of bait, Water temps cooperating and I just can´t say enough positive things about fishing here in the Bay of Banderas for the time being. 11 11 2013 Nathan Howard , 8 hrs, Pecositas super panga

Corbeteña, located thirty five miles out from Marina Vallarta has once again performed as its reputation suggest. Yellowfin Tuna are still in the area running anywhere from 60 to over 200 lbs. Maybe larger, it´s been known to happen. Sailfish are taking over all the fishing grounds right now, it´s their season. Dorado, of course, in the 45 to 65 lb range. Black Marlin are still running in the 500 to 750 lb range, but a touch more abundant this week. Same story for Blue Marlin seems to be an even mix. Wahoo are thinning as well and they´re not the largest, but with plenty of bait and clean blue water, they may hang for a while. Running in the 60 lb range, they´re the best tasting fish in the ocean amigo.

El Banco is seeing Cubera Snappers in the 65 lb range, Sailfish in the 80 to 100 lb range and Yellowfin Tuna, a little larger in the 80 lb and up range are eight miles north of the High Spots amigo. Finally something I can write about here at El Banco. Known as the place for World Record Fish, El Banco this year has been kinda taking it easy. For now Black and Blue Marlin are here as well. Dorado in the 45 lb range, with the possibility of hooking into Moby Dick. For my money though, Corbeteña is closer, cheaper on fuel, same fish, same conditions, but hey, that was yesterday… things could have changed.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Marietta Islands are a carbon copy of last week. Sailfish, Dorado in the smaller size ranges, Snapper in the 30 lb range. Rooster fish are getting kinda sparse, but still a shot for the light tackle guys with a hankering for arm burning action on the light! Punta Mita, just down the way a bit is still producing larger numbers of Dorado than anywhere else this week. Sailfish are taking over the whole area as is normal for this time of the year, and that is why we´re going to have the 58th Annual Pez Vela Tournament coming up this week as you are reading this article. Check the local news for details or the web site at: FishVallarta.com. Signup is the 13th, tournament begins the next morning at 7 a.m. and you must be back by five O´clock if they go with the normal finish times. Many boats are still available for the tournament if you need one in a hurry!

Inside the bay is the normal fare, smaller fish around the rocks and structure. In the bay you´ll find Dorado, Needle fish, Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna. Sailfish are tournament winning sizes at La Cruz. Why they are hanging out here for weeks now is a mystery, but still, they´re reliable. River Mouths are alive, for the local who wants great dinner catch, then Robalo is Snook which means a tasty white meat fish. Snappers are to be had as well in schools, but not too plentiful for some reason.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Water Temperatures are still the issue they have been all year, but it seems like there may be some changes in currents as we see the fish we like to see coming back in more abundant numbers as we enter the ending stretch of fishing’s high season. Bait, plenty, no worries anywhere. The bite is running about 9 in the morning and a little later in the afternoon for now, but keep an eye on the moon phases if you´re targeting Tuna. For some reason it changes their bite, but Marlin and other billfish will not be affected for the most part… the bite is the most important factor for them.

High Season Brings 200 lb Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo!

High Season Brings 200 lb Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo!

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

All year long we wait for High Season. We know the tourist are back and we know we´ll see more people coming to Puerto Vallarta by the day. This time of the year we see the days grow shorter and cooler. Yet the water temperatures will take weeks and weeks before they begin to drop. For now, conditions could not be better and when fish are abundant, you have a recipe for success. But first you have to be on the water to take advantage of our world class fishing in the Bay of Banderas!Monster Yellowfin Tuna Jeff Illingsworth

Well, I am happy to say I could have almost used last weeks fishing report as this weeks model. More tropical disturbances, rain is tapering off and the fishing is picking up again as we are into the tournament season. Cabo has calmed down from the tournament frenzy as the locals prepare and study for the 85th Pez Vela Fishing Tournament Nov. 13th thru 16th. It´s a real happening for Vallarta and always done up well by the Club de Pesca organization. The premier fishing club in the Puerto Vallarta area will once again host this shin-dig in Marina Vallarta. For more details visit the web site at FishVallarta.com.  Boats are available but you better get on the stick if you want to compete. Black Marlin Corbeteña wCapt Kawi

Corbeteña is still working it´s magic with smaller Wahoo in the 40 lb range all over the place. Remember to use wire leader, or you´ll lose another one of those expensive lures! Live bait is almost never used on Wahoo, they attack a bait, bite it in half and then come back for the pieces. It freaks the fish out when a half bait keeps moving behind a boat! So lures are always used on Wahoo, with wire leaders! I have personally seen one of these Wahoo´s chew through a stainless hook… granted it was a lot rusty, but still, a hook? Best tasting fish out there, these are referred to as Ono in Hawaii if you are more familiar with that name. Sailfish, Dorado in the 45 lb range, Marlin of the Black Variety mostly, but Blue Marlin are sprinkled in. But Yellowfin Tuna are beginning to pick up in size and density. You can expect to see then running from 80 to 150 lbs with the occasional 200 lb beauty just waiting for you to show up! Plenty of bait in the area, no problems making bait. Water Tempes are still warm at 85 degrees, but for now Tuna are not too deep and taking surface trolled Google Eyes. Kites are working well also, but for now the extra trouble associated managing a kite, just troll, you´ll have the same results.

El Banco is showing stronger signs of Black and Blue Marlin with ranges in the 450 lb to 700 lb range, but mostly under 500 lbs. Sailfish as well along with Cubera Snappers and a few smaller Yellowfin Tuna, but for the record, fish move and YF Tuna love the high spots. So keep an open mind.

Marietta Island and El Morro, same story as last week. Sails in the 80 lb club, Rooster fish are still around the reefs in the 35 to 60 lb range. Needle fish, Snappers to 40 lbs, Dorado around 30 lbs and the list goes on. Well worth an eight hour day.

Punta Mita, what can I say, Dorado, Sails, more Dorado, it´s a machine. Frankly is you´re looking for more variety I´d be heading out to the Marietta Islands. Still, 100 lb Sailfish and 40lb Dorado are not chopped liver by any stretch. Trash line is soon a thing of the past as the rains subside, so get out there already! They are not going anywhere for the next few minutes anyway.11 16 2013 Dorado Mariettas

The bay is still a thing of beauty. River mouths are alive with Snook, Yelapa is still looking at 35 to 60 lb Yellowfin Tuna. Sailfish are in love with La Cruz this year. Dorado, Snapper in the bay and soon we´ll see the Whales and these fish will think they´re lunch. So get at them before things change. Short days, nice weather. It´s a real luxury to explore the bay and see what it has to offer. You really have not seen PV until you have seen it from the ocean, in a wor, spectacular .
