Welcome to Fish City, Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish and More!

Finally, it’s fish city at Corbeteña and El Banco. Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado and yes even Yellowfin Tuna amigos. Things have changed, water conditions are close to perfect, the moon phase is in full cooperation and there is plenty of bait in the deep, blue water locations. We´ve also seen more tourism or people due to the incredible vacation deals to Mexico. If you´re not here in Mexico, it´s time you thought about coming down!

The past week El Banco has been hot and cold when it comes to the Yellowfin Tuna. Some days they´re in the 60 lb range, others they´re in the 100 lb range. Then there are those days when someone will boat a 200 to 300 lb Yellowfin Tuna. This is just enough to make people think they´re out there and ready for action. But don´t be too excited amigo, fishing is still fishing and anything can happen. If you´re dead set on Yellowfin Tuna Monsters, you may come back disappointed. But if you´re looking for some serious Game Fish, then there should be no complaints. Marlin between 300 and 650 lbs has been happening daily. Sailfish and large Dorado are hitting live bait and lures alike.  With Blue water conditions and perfect water temperatures El Banco is still your best option if you´re looking for a possible world record fish! They´re out there, where are you? For now, there is no reason to pinch those precious  fuel dollars now!

Corbeteña, the other popular deep water locations is alive with action as well. Cubera Snappers have been coming up In the 45 to 65 lb range. Sailfish are very large and getting more abundant by the day in the 80 to 100 inch length range. Amberjacks and Rainbow runners have been in and out for some reason. But Yellowfin have been mostly in and ranging from 60 to 200 lbs, it just depends on what you come across amigos . Surface trolling has been working, but down riggers are still suggested, just in case! When it comes to Yellowfin Tuna, Kites are still your best option, so don´t forget it or forsake it! Chum never hurts, but if you live in Vallarta, most boats won´t chum for nothing. Mixed reviews on dead bait chum, no squids, that´s another story. When Yellowfin are in the area and you can´t get them to pay attention to your baits, try squid chum and you´ll probably have different results.

El Morro and the Marietta Islands have exploded this week again with more Sailfish, smaller Dorado, Rooster fish and several other species just waiting to get to your bait! Trolling, casting and drifting are the best way to go this week. It has actually turned into a no-brainer, all you need to do is find a way out there and you´ll discover what I am talking about. For those of you on a budget, 8 hr days are relatively cheap and very productive. Pictured are my Fish ¨N¨ Chicks picture of a group of ladies who like to fish. They went to El Morro, hooked into two Sailfish, released one. Then got Mahi, Bonito and assorted other smaller fish. It was a great day, it was only 8 hrs and everyone came back with big smiles and tired arms!

Those  interested in bay fishing will be happy to hear that the area out near Punta Mita and north a bit are producing very nice sized Dorado or Mahi in the 40 lb range. And not just one or two, yesterday I had a boat come in with at least four in this size range. The same boat went to the same area the day before and couldn´t get any attention paid to baits, lures or prayers! Just another example how in a heartbeat things can change. Other species are available as well like Snappers, Bonito, Needle fish and more, but they´re not Dorado. Six hour day will put you on these Golden green and blue beauties!

Water Temperatures are staying in line with normal and there is plenty of bait at the fishing grounds. So far we´re seeing a late season, but a season none the less. Those coming to Puerto Vallarta fishing grounds will be happy to know the primary locations are still for the most part percolating with action and waiting for you to arrive. We expect these conditions not to carry us into November when we have the Pez Vela Tournament. There should be plenty of fish for all of us until January when the seasons once again change.

Remember, if you have any questions or suggestions you can reach me at: www.MasterBaiters.com.mx or CatchFish@MasterBaiters.com.mx

That’s it for now, Until Next Week, don´t forget to kiss your fish!

Don’t Give Up on Yellowfin Tuna, the Season is Not Over Yet!

This is in the range of normal for PV when it comes Yellowfin Tuna

This is in the range of normal for PV when it comes Yellowfin Tuna

Don’t Give Up on Yellowfin Tuna, the Season is Not Over Yet!

Normally Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta is a no brainer, especially at this time of the year. Normally we see Yellowfin Tuna in the 200 to 300 lb range at this time of the year, but this year is one of those special years called El Nino. Most people hear the name El Nino all the time, but in reality have no clue what it really means. Yes they know the weather is going to be a little weird and this is a normal thing. No global warming causing this, but it will get blamed for this. As the currents from the equator change and water temperatures all over the world fluctuate, this affects not only fishing, but weather patterns around the globe. Now this year we´re seeing the Yellowfin follow the currents way north to California and beyond. Four years ago, when we had the last El Nino, they were catching Sailfish off the state of Washington, I’m serious about that, made the national news it was so strange. I haven´t heard anything that strange as yet so far this year, but I am sure something like this will come out in the news.

Now you may be asking ¨How does this affect the fishing in Puerto Vallarta¨?  Well, the biggest indication El Nino is here, is again the weather. One example how it affects the fishing here in PV is the water temperatures. Get used to this, I will be talking a length about this condition in the coming months. When water temperatures get over 88 degrees, the Yellowfin find this too warm. So they head out of the warm water, or go deep in areas where there is live bait. This is why a downrigger is so important. For the same reason you need a fish finder, and thermal layer indicator on your electronics. With this information, you can make sure you don’t lose your downrigger sinker and make sure you’re in a comfortable temperature for the species you’re trolling for. When the water temperatures are up, this is the only way you´ll find a Yellowfin Tuna, otherwise they’re like Elvis and have left the building!

Now the last couple of weeks, we´ve seen some drastic changes in the water temperatures. Last week I told you how they water at Corbeteña was like 82 degrees. I was called a liar by a few who live in Marina Vallarta, but everyone now knows this is the case. Most days you´ll find the water temps in the 82 to 86 degrees range. This is perfect for Sailfish, Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi and more. So it´s been a mystery why there haven’t been any Trophy fish to speak of in the deep water locations of El Banco and Corbeteña. I´ll tell you, it had me pulling my hair out trying to figure out what to tell customers. You don’t want to step on their dreams, but on the other hand you don’t want to build unrealistic expectations for clients either. They will just come back mad and never trust you again. While on the other hand, Pocco down the Malicon will tell people whatever they want to hear to sell a charter. Last week I had a guy come in the shop and quote a below operation cost price to me and said this guy told him he could boat Moby Dick in a six hour day. I told the guy the truth, just to find him going out the next day with my lying competition. You can guess the results. Getting back to the subject, it’s difficult at best right now to put a real positive face on the fishing scene in Vallarta right now.

Having said all that, this week we´re seeing another change for the better. This week we´ve seen some 300 lb Yellowfin Tuna boated at El Banco. For the most part the Yellowfin have been in the 100 pound range. Right now we´re real happy to have any Yellowfin at our World famous fishing grounds. But there are other species at The Bank as well. Black and Blue Marlin are and have been coming back into the area and this is a good sign indeed. Last week I mentioned that there were some flying fish here at El Banco. I was expecting this to draw in the Pelagic or billfish, but it didn´t. Now trolling live bait on the surface and running a down rigger will cover your bases and give you the best chance at a Gamefish you´re going to get. Sailfish and Mahi are here as well, so if you´ve been saving your pennies for fuel, now would be a good time to shake the piggy bank!

Corbeteña also has lots of bait in the water, just like last week. Only now there are fish in the area to grab their attention. Now I don’t want to make it sound like you’re fishing in a barrel, but you are fishing in one of the best locations in Mexico for fishing. Not every boat is coming in with fish, but every boat I sent out this week to El Banco and Corbeteña came back with fish. This sail fish with James Calvert is just one example this week of the better conditions. With blue water conditions and perfect sea conditions, those lucky anglers who are here in Vallarta right now will enjoy uncrowded fishing grounds like twenty years ago. Something you probably won’t see here ever again. Those not afraid of the crap they smear all over NBC News and CNN and come to SAFE Mexico will enjoy the trip of a lifetime, I guarantee it. For some reason the press has a stiffie for Mexico and will smear this country from afar for some agenda only they know of. But if you have any real questions about what is going on in every corner of Mexico, go to www.thetruthaboutMexico.com …. It´s all in English from people who have recently visited the country and in their own words spell out what the deal really is in Mexico. If swine flu or H1N1 is your concern, The States are more dangerous than Mexico ever was and the USA never closed the schools or other densely populated areas for ten days like Mexico. So don´t be afraid, be cautious and take all this doom and gloom with a grain of salt. If PV was infested or dangerous, I´d say it was….. Stay tuned.

If you’re looking for a shorter day, yet still want to catch some nice light tackle game fish, the bay is the best bang for your buck right now. El Morro and the Marietta Islands are alive with smaller game fish, but plentiful. Jack Crevalls, Rooster fish, Snappers, Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna and more are waiting for you to temp them with something. Even a lure, in fact, this past week, many times lures worked better than live bait. So you need to remember to run everything you´ve got in the lure bag as well as live bait. Vary the presentation with skirts off that goggle eyes nose of different colors, chum, and pray. None of it hurts and by trying something that you know won´t work, just may! This day is well worth the time and easier on the vacation wallet!

Inside the bay things have been the Luke warm conditions that have prevailed for the last month. With no rain, there is no Trash Line in the bay. The smaller game fish love to feed off the seeds, leaves, bugs and organic materials that go with this trash line. Although that is not to say there are no fish in the bay, which would be silly…. Out near Cabo Corrientes or south towards Chimo, Skip Jack Tuna have been bringing in larger game fish. Now Some Sails are roaming the bay, but this is like getting lightening to strike where you tell it to. Not likely, but who knows, maybe you´ve got the power amigo. Lots so snappers in the shallow areas with structure, Bonito, Skips, Needle fish, Mackerals, and the list goes on. If you’re looking for a short day with some action, this is what the doctor ordered!

It looks like the back half of fishing high season will pick up and find more fish in the area for the visiting and local anglers alike. With the blue water and better water temps I expect the fishing to continue to improve. With the great prices being offered to tourist, we´ve already seen a slight increase in the number of charter boats heading out in the morning. Everyone in Marina Vallarta is optimistic about the upcoming tournaments with the fish returning and ever so slight daily improvements.

Now remember, you can always fire me an email and ask me anything that comes to mind about Mexico or Puerto Vallarta, doesn’t have to be about fishing, Restaurants, banking, medical stuff, even questions about how the water is clean and very drinkable in Puerto Vallarta are more than welcome. It´s about building community and not so much about promoting my business. I am well known, so I am truly interested in your well being and getting the straight truth to you without an agenda. Can’t say that about many in Puerto Vallarta, so don´t be afraid to ask, answers are free……

Well, that’s enough for this week, until next time, don’t forget to kiss your fish….

Fishing Report for Sept. 20, 2009 for Master Baiter’s Sportfishing and Tackle

Written by: Stan Gabruk.

The web Site Bloody Decks is the Joke of the Industry and Here´s Why

The web Site Bloody Decks is the Joke of the Big Game Charter Industry and Here´s Why:  A few years back, a well known captain here in Puerto Vallarta came across a couple of ¨Skaters¨ and the conversation came up on how there was very little information about fishing coming out of Puerto Vallarta (PV). The idea of Bloody Decks came up and a generic fishing report or forum format was used. People were allowed to post fishing reports for their area for free. Now it started with Puerto Vallarta and spread out to other  areas like Southern California, Florida, Hawaii and other locations less exotic. Not really a bad idea and it could generate revenue for the charter companies who post their reports. Simple Idea, but for one thing,  It never took into account the quality of the person who would be posting these reports. On top of that, the forums were open to comments from the ¨Peanut Gallery¨. Most people are reserved and don´t go to extremes with language, photos of half naked chicks and blatant attacks on those who post articles. I don´t mean just some, I mean everyone that posted a fishing report about Vallarta! Now a few years later, Bloody Decks has its own tournaments, quite a following and it is still a low classed, low rent site that promotes the Puerto Vallarta Taliban! That’s right, post an article and if you spell a word wrong,  you´re the dumbest idiot on the planet. And this all comes from guys who never made it on a campus of a college, let alone attend! Now I don´t know about the other places Bloody Decks post articles about, but I do know that Puerto Vallarta was the main reason the site was put up. So I thought I´d post some articles of clients day fishing with the company I own. If  you don’t know by now, I own Master Baiter’s Sportfishing and Tackle® in Puerto Vallarta. We´re one of the oldest Fishing companies in PV and we´re world famous. Sounds impressive, but don´t be too impressed, there aren’t that many companies with a name like ours, so it gets us a lot of attention. Both positive and negative…. So, getting back to the subject, I start posting nice and brief articles on the site about clients’ catches from the day or day before. Immediately after I posted my first article, the Taliban came after me. How dare I post an article on the Taliban’s site. Didn´t I know I wasn´t welcome, being the owner of Master Baiter´s and all, was I nuts? Then came the Slanderous comments. One guy,  his  name will remain anonymous, accused me and my company of embezzling peoples money and that my money back guarantee on our fishing trips was a scam,  I never paid anyone on the guarantee. In fact, this guy went on to say that was why he started his fishing company so people would be able to fish with a reputable company and not be scammed at Master Baiter´s… No kidding, they even went beyond that. In fact they started a smear campaign, all 12 of the Taliban, most of which live in Canada, did everything they could to get me off that site, which I was having fun with. But that all came to a halt when the site banned me from posting clean, informative and accurate articles. Of course the Taliban didn´t like the idea that I ignored their comments and threatened legal action against the site for allowing slanderous statements and out and out lies about me and my company. After some thought and reflection, I came to understand that the general public (their readers) didn´t go to bloody decks for information that was accurate. They were going to the site because of the Trash Talk, Half Naked women, swearing and lying…. The non-stop attacks on visiting anglers who wanted to post an article on their fishing trips has all but stopped unless you´re a ¨friend of the taliban¨.   I remember this one guy posted an article that did sound like it was stretching some facts a little. But nothing outside of acceptable embellishments. After all we are all fisherman and the fish will just continue to get larger as time goes by in our memories. If you ever caught a large fish, you know this…. Anyway, the Taliban jumped on this guy’s article and called him everything under the sun using all the four letter words in Devils dictionary. Shortly afterwards I noticed that there weren´t any locals except the 12 Taliban that posted articles about Puerto Vallarta. Then I noticed that the Taliban spent so much time blowing smoke up each others asses that they stopped writing about fishing and started writing about the whore they boinked on the boat the night before. Something that I wouldn´t want my son or daughter reading about for sure.  The one thing I really ¨love¨ about Bloody Decks and their Taliban, when they speak or write of a day on the water, of course they´re super men. They are so busy patting themselves on the back, that they don´t have the desire or  energy left to maintain their boats! That´s right folks, they have horrible boats, they provide bad service and they´ve been known to scam clients out of money owed them and much, much worse. I tell you this from clients that used to fish with these guys and now fish with Master Baiter´s! You see, I see everything from my Marina View point. Boats coming in, going out, not leaving the docks, you name it. I know the boats that are broken, need maintenance, are being repossed or are scamming clients who think they went to El Banco, but in reality went half way there, slowly…. If you think I hate Bloody Decks, you´ve got that right. The reason I really don´t like the site  is if it wasn´t for Bloody Decks, these low rent Fishing charter companies would be out of business. That´s right folks, the only marketing these Taliban boats do is this free stuff because that is the sort of people they are. If you´re looking for a fishing boat and you want a decent boat, there are many sites that are reputable and charge companies for the privilege for posting their articles. So you’ll know right off the bat that you can at least trust these folks. I don´t care where you´re going, you can trust the companies posted on sites like Western Out Door News, Mexfish.com, World Wide Fishing Guide to name a few. You won´t find swear word, Naked chicks, or a Taliban waiting to ambush you for posting an innocent article about your day. For the record, I know several people involved in this level of Sportfishing that used to post articles, then stopped for the same reasons I just listed. People who are not strangers to publications like Marlin Mag, ESPN and Fox Sports to name a few. None of which give Bloody Decks any credibility at all. So be aware and know what you´re getting when you read Bloody Decks. Don’t let your kids read this stuff, it will fry their brains. And remember this, when these guys start pointing fingers all the way from Canada,  you´ve always got at least three pointing back at you. If the only way you can drum up business is by cutting some vacationing angler off at the Knees so you can look like an expert, iy only makes you look stupid. If the only guy talking you up, is you, then you have nothing going for yourself. Only when others say you´ve got something going for you, is when you can start to think you’re doing something right. If you’re looking for a charter, anywhere in the world, I will help you find the guys you can rely on and trust. If they´re off Bloody Decks, beware, they’re a bunch of liars that prey on those who think the site is cool, therefore they must be cool also. After all, they said they are!! My name is Stan Gabruk, Owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle® in Puerto Vallarta. We´ve been in business since 2000 and we´re world Famous. Master Baiter´s is a two time WBS Billfishing series World Champions for malin in 2000 and 2001. Nobody on Bloody Decks can come close to making a claim even close to that. You can read my weekly articles on my web site: http://www.MasterBaiters.com.mx or at World Wide Fishing Guide, Western Outdoor News, Marlin Mag online or my blog at: http://www.masterbaiters.wordpress.com/ . So Bloody Decks, put that in your pipe and smoke it! OH, I also now have a biweekly program on http://www.Bandaresnews.com on fishing in Puerto Vallarta Called ¨Vallarta Fishing Experience¨ where we promote the Puerto Vallarta Yacht and Charter Association (PVYAFCA.com). The Taliban has started a barrage on the company trying to kill my articles. But it’s like this, nobody goes after the number two guy. So if the only way they can get any attention in this world is to be haters and tear others down, it doesn´t give them much time to pat themselves on their own backs….. I guess I should thank these guys for the compliment. In any case, I won´t stop what I have been doing for years and years now. And maybe when Bloody Decks actually gets these guys some business, maybe they will clean their act up and try to put a professional face out there instead of some foul mouthed fat whore on their site and focus on their money maker, fishing in Puerto Vallarta…… Stay tuned!

There are more species of fish in Puerto Vallarta Fishing Grounds, Cubera Snappers are One Example!

Sept 13 09 Ken Sutula, Sirena, Corbeteña, Giant Pargo 90 inch 003 RedPIx

65 lb Cubera Snapper, Ken Sutula, Lucky Dog!

65 lb Cubera Snapper, Ken Sutula, Lucky Dog!

This fish is a little heavy for Ken to lift, Is that a problem?

This fish is a little heavy for Ken to lift, Is that a problem?

There are more than Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin in Puerto Vallarta Fishing grounds amigos! One example are these photos of Cubera Snapper. Now this is a 65 lb snapper. It taped out at 90 pounds using some formula Ken Sutla used. Who knows what the formula was, but the scale used said 65 lbs, so 65 it is! Sorry Ken……

Like I always say, Corbeteña is the most versitile location for fishing we have in Puerto Vallarta. With the island or Rock as we call it, the deep troughs that surrond the island and the rocky bottom with structure will hole the interest of most species these famous fishing grounds have to offer.

Pictured here is a friend of mine, Yes his name is Ken Sutula, who on Sirena (not a Master Baiter’s boat for the record) using a down rigger of about 60 feet got this nice Red Scaled beauty. Now Ken is just under six feet tall, so these will give you an idea of how big this fish really is. Imagine that there are those people who will turn their nose up at these fish because that is bottom fishing and of course they, who ever ¨they¨ are, won´t lower themselves to bottom fishing. OK, I don´t understand that logic, but there you are.

For those who like fish pictures, here are a few nice ones to rev up that imagination of yours and hopefully get you here to Puerto Vallarta in the near future……

Enjoy the photos and remember, a bad day fishing in Puerto Vallarta is still better than the best day at work!

Conditions Improve As Water Temperatures Drop to Normal Levels Ever since El Nino raised its ugly head

_07_01 RedPixConditions Improve As Water Temperatures Drop to Normal Levels Ever since El Nino raised its ugly head, we´ve been talking about how warmer water temperatures may sound like a good thing, but in reality can really wrench things up. Like I’ve written about now for weeks, the water temperatures when in extreme levels will drive Yellowfin either down deep or out of the area. Now we´ve been seen signs of Yellowfin at Corbeteña and El Banco, this is more than what we had been seeing. We’re all thankful for that, although in the smaller ranges of 60 to 100 lbs, right now we´re not complaining.

Many people don’t know that water temperatures will actually drive weather patterns and create good and bad conditions. Here in Puerto Vallarta we are experiencing a real lack of rain, which is keeping everyone very warm indeed. Now that may sound like a good thing, but when it comes to fishing we all look for the ¨Trash Line¨ in and out of the bay. This is organic stuff that washes down the local hills and mountains into the bay. The trash is things like leaves, seeds, sticks, all sorts of stuff that fish love. So with a lack of a Trash Line, especially in the bay, it forces us to look fish were ever we have a hunch or rumor about. Along with that lack of rain comes warmer water temperatures in the bay. This makes things uncomfortable in the bay as well for smaller game fish. This drives them in closer to shore and that is a great thing for those who like to fly fish or Surf Fish. So remember, you don´t have to be on a boat to get some great action.

When we talk about conditions at Corbeteña, we always know there are fish there, no matter what! But, last week with 90 something degree water temps, nothing was there. Now the water temperatures the other day when I went out, were in the lower 80’s. Low to upper 80’s are considered perfect for Yellowfin Tuna, Black Marlin and Dorado. Sails can handle warmer and lower temperatures more easily it seems than other bill fish. So with this good news, there have been several Yellowfin Tuna boated in the last week, but most under 100 lbs. I know, I talk like that is a small fish, but my normal Monster clients are looking for the 200 lb plus sizes. Me, any Yellowfin I hook into makes my day amigo. I love ‘em a little smaller. Less work and better tasting to my taste buds. Cubera Snapper and lots of Rainbow runners, See photo. El Banco is hot and cold, literally. The water temps here at El Banco have fluctuated but are now hovering in the mid 80’s and the Black Marlin are liking this. With plenty of bait fish, mostly Bonito, you would expect the action to pick up. Mahi in the 45 lb range, small for El Banco, but perfect bait for Sails and Marlin, are hanging out at the high spots. Those are areas where spikes dart up from the ocean bottom to Stalactite type formations just 60 ft. below the surface of the water. Now those spikes are perfect places for smaller game fish, which of course bring in larger game fish, which is turn gets us to spend a bunch of money hoping to boat Moby Dick! Now Moby is not out there, but his cousin is! If you hit El Banco and for some reason don´t see the action I´m talking of, head towards Corbeteña and run some baits across the ridges and troughs. There are always fish in this area and it is many times ignored in favor of a fast trip to the rock. So take a few minutes and troll this area, you may wind up with new GPS locations. Like I said earlier, I hit Corbeteña this week hoping to tap into those Yellowfin, but none were there to be found. Plenty of natural bait, but all we saw were Sails and Blue Marlin who weren´t taking the baits. We had some bonito get bill whapped, but no takers! So we resorted to some bottom fishing and wound up with a couple of Rainbow Runners and a fish that looks like a Jack Crevall, but are called ¨Ojo de perra¨. The English translation is the ¨Eye of the Bitch, so that is what you see in the picture. They say it´s good tasting, I sent some home with a friend, we’ll let him be a guinea pig for me … stay tuned. The area around Litibu and the islands off Punta Mita seem to be staying consistent. Dorado, Roosters and some small sails are continually being boated in these locations and are a great value for those looking for action on a short day! Being September we know we´re not going to have that many people in Marina Vallarta. But this is exactly when the Angler interested in boating a world class gamefish should be here. With the deals on airfares and hotels, if you could swing a trip to Puerto Vallarta Sportfishing sites, it would be money well spent. Deserted Fishing Grounds and improving conditions create a great opportunity to get that finned fantasy and save a few dollars. With the peso weak compared to the dollar, come on down and find out for yourself that all that crap on CNN about Mexico is about as wrong as it can get! I’d love to see your smiling faces as you come back with a fish and a story you´ll never get tired of telling! Well, that’s it for this week, until next time, don’t forget to kiss your fish….

Because people are looking for deals, yet still want to hit the better fishing grounds, we at Master Baiter´s ® have started a Shared Boat Fishing Party for $250.00 usd per person. You´ll head out to Corbeteña with a well equipped boat and a ¨real¨ shot at boating that finned fantasy you came to Mexico for. You can contact me for more information at CatchFish@MasterBaiters.com.mx You can also be my Facebook Friend at: MasterBaitersPV@gmail.com and see my Fish Pic of the day. I also have a blog that is linked so if you´re interested in the daily happenings around Marina Vallarta and the fishing scene, connect with me and you´ll be informed and armed when it comes time to go fishing! It’s real time information and those in the area of Marina Vallarta will find it useful. I also post weather conditions like Hurricanes etc. I am doing everything you can do including Twitter (MasterBaiters) and I also have a new fishing program where I do a show called Vallarta Fishing Experience (http://www.banderasnews.com/sfproductions/vallarta-fishing-experience.htm). We promote the Puerto Vallarta Yacht and Fishing Charter Association (PVYAFCA) in an effort to direct people to boats of better quality. We Still Guarantee Your Catch or 30% of your money back. We are the only company I KNOW OF that does this anywhere! Only on specific company boats (company boats only in Marina Vallarta Store on the boardwalk). If you ask, we are also giving free hour fishing with every charter (except 12 hr charters) and a free T-shirt to who ever catches the biggest fish! That’s about a $125.00 usd value. Take advantage of this insider offer for reading my articles. Master Baiter´s now has a host of sites and features you can check out or become involved in. Puerto Vallarta Sportfishing, Every Hurricane Has A Yellowfin Tuna Silver Lining !

Puerto Vallarta Sportfishing, Every Hurricane Has A Yellowfin Tuna Silver Lining

It looks like things are loosening up at the fishing grounds after weeks of no rain, no bait and very few Yellowfin to speak of due to all sorts of things. But there have been some signs of life at Corbeteña, El Banco and the Marietta Islands. We´ve had a hurricane, rain, and the reappearance of the trash line. So there is reason to be a little excited about the possibilities at least for the next few days! Even if it all sounds a little scarey!

Now Hurricane Jemena is passing Puerto Vallarta and is a category five Hurricane. Now that is a major Hurricane and it´s a slow mover on its way to Cabo. Now Cabo Looks safe, but the Silver Lining in Hurricanes is the fact that fish will get pushed away from the storm and this means fish to the anglers lucky enough to be able to take advantage of this situation. Now you don´t want to be out there just after the storm, but wait a day and you could have some spectacular memories! Now this is common knowledge, so I´m not sharing any secrets with you. As long as you’re outside its path, then hurricanes can be the Anglers friend. It will bring fish to the surface, and rain cooled water these days has a strong appeal. For some reason, unknown to me, they like the ¨sweet, fresh water¨ conditions, which of course bring them to the surface.

Now, like I mentioned earlier, El Banco and Corbeteña have loosened up and people are coming in with fish. Marlin (350 lbs +), Sailfish (35 – 50 + lbs) and yes, even Yellowfin Tuna. They´ve been hanging in the 60 lbs to 125 lbs. range.  Kinda small for this time of the year, but still very welcome for those looking for the blue plate special. Now the tournament a couple of weeks ago produced 245 lb Yellowfin Tuna Winner, but I haven´t seen anything that large since. But again, being an El Nino year, we´ll be happy for what we see or get. At both Corbeteña and El Banco, Marlin and larger Dorado have been taking baits as well. You still need a down rigger and a kite, along with all the color you can find for your lures. Try everything and if you find the right combination, then you´re in the fish! Come Wednesday, the fishing should be great and hopefully will last like a hurricane hangover!

Now we all know that Corbeteña is special to me. Flexible, lots of natural structure and possibilities when it comes to different species, mix in a little bait and you´ve got a day you may never forget. With the deep troughs just around the ¨Rock¨ there are Yellowfin Tuna, possible very large in the 100 lb plus range. You´ve always got Cubera Snapper or Dog tooth Pargo up to 60 lbgs or larger. Sailfish have been known to take over the place and of course on any given day, Mahi in the larger ranges up to and over 50 lbs. is always a strong possibility! Yep, I love Corbeteña. If this location isn´t working, head towards El Banco on a slow troll using a down rigger at 100 or more feet down and anything is possible. El Nino is not the death of fishing, it´s an opportunity to open your mind, think out of the box and try new and varied things. Skirts on the nose of a Google eye is always a good trick. Hey, give it a shot, nothing is carved in stone when it comes to this level of fishing!

El Morro is still it´s predictable self. Rooster fish, Needle fish, Jack Crevalls, smaller Mahi and the list goes on. Still a great close in location for getting nice game fish.

The Marietta Islands have seen many Sailfish this past week, but not too many strikes. I don’t´know if it was the bait presentation or just being temperamental. But the last day or so this has changed with sails in the 80 inch or longer range. Now that we´re coming into Sailfish season in PV, they´ll be more and more abundant as we come closer to November. Now November is special around here because at the end of the month we have the 54th Pez Vela Tourneo. Or in English, The 54th Sailfish Tournament. It´s a big deal and a lot of fun! If you´re interested in participating, I have a bunch of boats that are reasonably priced, we don´t double the cost of the boats like most do. This year Master Baiter´s will have our newest boat, the Guerro Azteca, a 48 ft. 2009 Viking that is nothing short of Spectacular. It´s also no more than three weeks old!  Not to mention it´s also kinda on the pricy side. But a 1.5 Million Dollar beauty like this is not going to go cheap. This boat will get you to El Banco, fifty miles out, in ninety minutes! Not the two hour plus trip on a ¨fast¨ boat. So those of you interested in ¨line in the water time¨ should love this. After all, you´re paying to fish, not a boat ride! Now if you´re interested in an overnight trip (we are one of the few companies that offer this option), you can enjoy the luxury of an air conditioned cabin, on a superior boat, with a world class captain. If this sounds good to you, then this is the boat for you. Naturally not everyone will be able to afford this jewel of the sea, it´s not meant for everyone. If you´re not in that market, no worries amigos, we´ve got six Sportfishing boats and a couple of yachts to work with. So no worries, we´ve got something for every budget…

Inside the bay, the rains have helped a lot! The trash line has returned and the clean water side is still it´s productive self. Toss a Rapalla or diamond jig just a foot or so in the clean water side and you´ll be surprised what happens. Smaller Mahi, Roosters, Bonito, Snappers, Needle fish and more will be in the area feeding on the organic matter and smaller fish. So if you decide to make it a short day on the water, then why not look for this trash line and you too could come in with a smile that won´t leave your face. With Fajita Bananas or Victors restaurants there to cook your catch, the fun doesn´t have to end. Nothing better than fresh from the fishing grounds sea food! Even a guy like me can never get enough of this!

One little secret this past week is the area just before Punta Mita called Litibu has exploded with Rooster Fish in the 30 lb range, Dorado in the same size range, Snappers, Jack Crevalls and the list goes on. Now you may ask why it´s better in this area and not farther out. Well friends the water in the bay is just a little cooler now and with the seasonal rains picking up, the closer in to shore, the cooler the water for some reason. Maybe it´s the cool rains, maybe it´s the extra oxygen in the water, maybe it’s the availability of bait. But whatever the reason is, there are fish to be had there. Casting, trolling, drifting, it´s working closer in, so this is the secret this week. Save your money and hit the in-shore areas.

One thing that Puerto Vallarta has been without is regulations. Nobody in PV to enforce the laws means that nobody follows the laws. If you can pay your way out of having to have a fishing license, operating papers called Matriculas or insurance and safety equipment on board, you can sell your charters cheaper than those afraid to operate that way. For years this is how thing have been, corruption knows no boundaries amigos. But it looks like all that is going to change. I was talking with the govt. organization that controls the fishing licenses in Mexico and they tell me soon they´ll have an office in Marina Vallara to purchase your licenses. So no internet B.S. and less hassle purchasing a license. Now this is supposed to happen in the near future, but when exactly, I don´t know. With the recent discovery that a Sportfishing charter Game Fish can generate up to ten thousand dollars per fish, the Mexican Govt. has seen the light amigos. In Cabo to go out and come back in, without being checked these days for licenses and appropriate papers is very rare indeed! You see there is a fortune in fines also! About a year ago I was writing on how the local authorities there were handing out copies of the fishing regulations to everyone. This was their way of letting people know that the laws will be enforced, so here they are. Now, fishing regulations are being enforced in Cabo. The same is about to happen here in PV amigos. So make sure you´re up in the regulations. If you´re not, then contact me I´ll fire you off a copy of a pamphlet I scanned some time back. So you´ll know it’s illegal to filet your fish at sea. No matter how fresh you´re trying to keep your fish! This activity will get you a stiff fine if they can´t tell how many of which species you came in with. That´s right, you can get busted for that one! As things seem to go, you´ll be the first one who´s made an example of. You wouldn´t want to be the guy who gets caught, trust me! So be smart, be careful and be safe. It doesn´t hurt to be smart either! You’ve been warned. Come November and the Pez Vela Tournament, I’d expect licenses to be checked closely! Stay tuned…..

If you don´t already know, I have begun doing a online fishing program on Bandaresnews (dot) com called the Vallarta Fishing Experience (PVYAFCA) and it´s a kick in the pants to do. My first show was about the 3rd Annual Marlin and Tuna Tournament held in La Cruz Marina this year. It was fun and the winning fish were big, worthy of a tournament of this caliber. You can tune in and check it out every other week. But I´ll also have video fishing reports so you can see the boats daily catch, if they´re not filleted at sea. Now the program is not about Master Baiter’s, but I do get my opportunities to promote us and other reputable companies / captains! The fourth and firth of September is the Ujena Bikini Jam Tournament, I´ll be doing a program with the models this Thursday on Mikes Fishing charters and it should be interesting. I just wish I was young enough to interest some of these girls. But I´ve come to know several of them, so I think I´ll invite my ¨friends¨ in bikinis along for the show. It´s tough work, but somebody has to do it… It´s all fun, so check it out and hopefully we´ll do this for years to come.

Because people are looking for deals, yet still want to hit the better fishing grounds, at Master Baiter´s ® we have started a Shared Boat Fishing Party for $250.00 usd per person.
