You know it´s funny, we wait for this short period of time between the beginning of November to the end of December when our world class fishing grounds go into high gear. For now El Banco is sporting Monster Yellowfin tuna well over 200 lbs to close to 300 lbs and possibly even larger. Marlin and Dorado at Corbeteña, Sailfish at the Marietta Islands and the point off Punta Mita. To say this is the time of year to be in Puerto Vallarta looking to boat a bucket list fish would be an understatement.  This level of fishing is hard to find anywhere in the world. To find it here and now in PV is just your good luck. The only question is: Will you take advantage of this perfect opportunity? Life and time wait for no man, maybe you should stop delaying your life and put some ¨living in your life¨. After all, isn´t that what a vacation is all about? If you live in PV, then it´s definitely time you got on the water and experience at least one time in your life the thrill of World Class Sportfishing!

11 18 2014 10 hrs Corbeteña Sailfish Magnifico 01 MBTextThe buzz this week has all been about how El Banco has come to life, after years of waiting for the ¨dead¨ to rise again from the grave, this week it happened. With abundant bait in the area, load your tuna tubes up, set some lines and get ready for the ride of a lifetime. Heading six to seven miles north to northwest from the high spots will put you on 200 to 250 lb or larger Yellowfin Tuna. They´re hitting live bait, Skippies (Skip Jack Tuna) and making bait in the area is not hard. Trolling is working fine, but kites are always a plus and will insure a full fish box (it better be a big one). You also have Black Marlin, Sailfish and Dorado in the area. But to be up front, it´s mostly Tuna City out there so you’ve been informed, now make a decision amigo.

11 20 2014 Ken sutula y Robert 225 lb YFTuna MBTextYou would think that with El Banco full of YF Tuna that Corbeteña would be following … but this week the Rock has been slow at best. Yes there are fish to be had, but it seems it was a lot of work to get a strike from a Marlin or any other fish for that matter. Hopefully this is over with Striped Marlin and larger Dorado moving in the area. Sailfish in the mid to large ranges or 80 to 100 lbs, Black Marlin are small running in the 250 to 425 lb range. Blue Marlin are naturally smaller, but they`re running smaller than we like or anywhere from 150 lbs to 350 lbs. Dorado are looking good anywhere from 35 to 60 lbs and picking up in numbers. Wahoo in the 50 lb range if you´re lucky enough to hook one in the corner of their mouth. Cubera Snappers are still for the bottom fishing guys but they´re in the 50 to 65 lb range so don´t be afraid to do some ¨jigging¨ for the dinner table. Corbeteña is a happening area and will continue to be so for the next eight weeks or so. Marlin and Sailfish don´t appease a hunger for Yellowfin Tuna. In the next week or so we should see YF Tuna filter over from El Banco, I think, I´ve been wrong before, just ask my ex-wife!

The Marietta Islands are finally showing signs of life with Sailfish moving in, Dorado in the 35 lb range and up. Maybe a Rooster fish, but don’t hold your breath. Naturally there are plenty of Bonito, Skip jack Tuna and who knows Moby Dick may be just a few miles off the islands. If you´re in the area of Punta Mita, you can troll between the point and the Islands to maximize your chances. The Point of Punta Mita has produced nicely for the entire summer and now is no different. Sailfish, Dorado and a little farther out you have a shot at Stripers or Striped Marlin in normal language. Eight hour trips will not disappoint so get out there already!11 16 2014 Tyler Mathewson 11 yrs 03, Coco Loco super panga 400 pxls MBText

The bay is just perfect. For the guy (or gal) looking for a short day and lots of action on smaller fish, maybe not that small, then the bay is for you. Smaller Dorado to 35 lbs, Bonito to 35 lbs, Skip jacks in

there same size range, Jack Crevalls, Sailfish in the north part of the bay and Football Tuna around Yelapa. Yep, you´ve got options and all of them end up with you catching fish.

As far as conditions go, the water is perfect but we´re seeing water temperatures fluctuations between deep water, mid distance and in the bay. For the most part water temps are in the 81 to 84 range, we will start seeing Striped Marlin as water temps will srtart to dip in a few weeks. Live bait is king this week and there´s plenty of it. Flying fish all around the bay are always a welcome sight. Most of them are in the six inch size range, Google Eyes, Skip Jack Tuna and Bonito. Blue water, smooth seas, temperate climate, it all adds up to supreior and comforatble conditions for the heat sensitive types.

There you go, fishing in paradise doesn´t get much better, that is unless the fish jump in your boat, but if that fish has a ¨bill¨ on its face, duck!

Yellowfin Tuna at El Banco, Sailfish & Marlin Increase

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

11 01 2014 Bill y Wendy No 4 , Magnifico, Group Fish MBTextWe all know that predicting what will happen in the world or Sportfishing is almost impossible. Now we can tell you what happened yesterday and what we ¨think¨ will happen tomorrow, but in the end we´re just throwing out a best guess when targeting gamefish. The only thing that balances out fishing predictions is if it happened ¨there¨ yesterday, it could still be happening ¨there¨ today. Of course you´re always disappointed when you visit yesterdays spot and your targeted fantasy fish is nowhere to be found. What is exciting is when you catch a species that you didn´t expect and right now that´s Yellowfin Tuna. That´s right, I used the ¨YF¨word, but it´s far from automatic amigos, but the chance is there!
11 01 2014 Hewett and Reiner party MBTextAnyone who knows fishing in PV knows that if you want big, world class fishing, you have to be at either Corbeteña or El Banco (or anywhere in between), both are our famous deep water, deep sea star fishing grounds. Especially at this time of the year when anything impossible can become possible as screaming reels announce ¨Fish On¨. As mentioned earlier El Banco has shown ¨some¨ signs of life in the form of Yellowfin tuna in the 100 to 150 lb range. So you have a chance, how much of a chance you may ask? Well if you`re in the area the chances improve. Black and Blue Marlin, mostly Blue Marlin are also around the area running anywhere from 350 lbs to over 800, just depends on your luck. And for the present Dorado in the 35 lb range are moving into the area as well. With Rainbow runners, Cubera Snappers and Sailfish, there isn´t many species you don´t have a shot at right now! Oh, if targeting Yellowfin, make sure you´re using a kite, keep that between us!
11 01 2014 Yellowfin Tuna 60lbs off El BancoCorbeteña is about the same, Yellowfin Tuna have arrived and the numbers are picking up by the minute. Still the Sailfish, Marlin, Dorado and Snappers  should also catch your attention. Corbeteña is a little cheaper trip, a little closer and for my money, may be a better choice for the next ten minutes or so.  Decisions, Decesions!
If you´re around the Marietta Islands there is finally some signs of life with some, I said some Rooster fish in the area, tons of Bonito 20 to 45 lbs, Needle fish in the 40 lb range. Maybe a slight shot at Dorado. But Sailfish are close to El Morro and I see no reason why they´re not closer to the Marietta Islands, but there you are. Heading out towards Corbeteña trolling, Blue Marlin have been hanging out around the area, so being in the area is the first requirement amigo! Now if you´re in the area off the point off Punta Mita, you´re still boating Sailfish and Dorado, nothing new since it´s been like this all summer. If you´re looking at only 8 hrs, then these two places will get you some arm burning action.

11 02 2014 Mike Profita Party, Guanatuna II, 8 hrs MBTextInside the bay is great with massive amounts of Bonito, Skip jack Tuna to 50 lbs around Yelapa still, Needle fish, Jack Crevalls are here as well and they´re primarily a winter fish. Sailfish are still being boated by the lucky few in the bay, to me this is unusual, but lately it´s been kinda normal.. go figure.
So you pretty much can´t lose when it comes to fishing for the time being. Water temps are slightly cooler, but not cold. Northern water temps around California are dropping quickly so we´re expecting to see Yellowfin Tuna numbers pick up for the late season, same for Dorado. With this being an El Nino year, our fish have been vacationing in Southern California so we´ll welcome them back with open arms and a gaff. Blue water and smooth seas have been the norm, but we´re always on the watch for late season Hurricanes. The full moon will be on us soon, so be aware and have some fun. One last thing, some days it seems that Dorado are only taking lures, so have some blue, silver and pink lures at the ready. Live bait is plentiful with bullet Bonito, Google Eyes, Flying fish and the list of course goes on. For the moment the bite is happening around 11:00 a.m. , so getting to the fishing grounds too early will not help  your situation. But again, the full moon is just a few days from now and the Yellowfin especially will be using the moon light to full advantage stuffing themselves with abundant bait.  Another piece of  useable ¨reel time¨ fishing information that can make a difference in your fishing safari amigo!

233648W5_NL_smNewsletter Extra:
Many of you find I post these same articles in the local news papers and the busiest web pages in PV.  They post my articles a little late and that´s the reason I send these ¨Reel Time¨ fishing reports to the locals. This is information you will be glad you have if you´re heading fishing in the next couple of days…  Hurricane Vance is marching north and will be well outside of Puerto Vallarta, so don’t panic. But it will pass us and this could put some rough seas on us as well as some stormy weather. Now the mountains that surround PV protects us and we´re happy for that! But the track is looking like Cabo will be at the end of it´s track. There is a low pressure front coming down from the north which could push the system inward.  For now we´re seeing calm seas and blue water.  It may also be nothing, but then again, it´s something to keep an eye on if scheduled for a fishing charter in the next few days. Below I show some information as to it´s tracking and systems that are working.

Nov. 4th Update: Magnifico went to Corbeteña, it was smooth seas in the morning, but in the after noon the wind and rain picked up, got windy and the sea´s picked up in size and frequency. But now Hurrican Vance will make landfall before 10:00 a.m. Wednesday Morning, so the storm is on a fast track to the mainland! I have boats scheduled to head out tomorrow morning, Wednesday, keep your fingers crossed.

11 02 2014 John Curcio, MiJenny, Marietta Islands 400 pxls MbTextWhales:  Normally Whales don´t show up until December, but we´re already seeing Whales moving into the area.  Magnifico spotted two today, one with a baby already! This means we need to be watchful for whales just under the surface, fast boats can easily hit a Whale, I´ve done it, it´s not pretty!  Also remember if you´re chasing whales around the bay

As we march into tourisms high season, fishing is still at peak performance with perfect conditions all over our world famous fishing grounds of Corbeteña and El Banco. Blue water, plenty of bait varieties and enough fish to support weekly local tournaments and sport fisherman alike. It´s simple, get on a boat, get to the Marietta Islands, drop baits and lures, head towards Corbeteña or El Banco and get ready for the action to begin amigo. It´s summer fishing in paradise and it´s time for you to get your share!

Once again this week we´ve seen no rain as the rainy and Hurricane season comes to an end. This of course means the Trash Line is mostly a thing of the past, but that doesn´t mean there isn´t great fishing around the bay of Banderas. Bonito are still all over the bay running 25 to 35 lbs, perfect bait size for Sailfish and Marlin. Jack Crevalls, a winter species is still in the bay in nice numbers. Yellowfin Tuna Footballs around Yelapa, Sailfish around La Cruz to Punta Mita, with 20 lb Dorado all over the bay. For the visiting Angler who is looking to catch something for the dinner table, then you´re in luck amigo. Give yourself a six hour trip to make sure you get a chance to find that arm burning action. Remember, fish move and they have most likely changed location from the day before, so give yourself some ¨looking time¨ unless of course they know you´re coming, then that´s another thing!

The area around the Marietta Islands have been on the slow or dead side now for weeks, but this doesn´t mean these normally reliable fishing grounds can`t spring to action. Sailfish and Dorado can be in the area, but they´ve been mostly out of the area towards the deep water locations. El Morro has had Sailfish action and is more reliable, but once you´re in the area, drop baits and start trolling outwards from the bay. The farther you move out from the island area the more likely you´ll boat a Sailfish, Blue Marlin or Dorado in the 25 to 35 lb range. Any day now we´ll see this area explode with action again, but that day is not today amigo, other areas are more attractive for now and I wouldn´t spend much time here unless you see bait balls in the area.

Punta Mita is all about Sailfish and if you can find any floating trash or logs, then you´ll be in Dorado City. The area around Sayulita seems to be a recent hangout out. No guarantees, but if you´re heading to the Marietta Islands, then take a few minutes and try out the point.

As is normal in Summer the best fishing grounds are either El Banco or Corbeteña. It´s been like that forever and this week is no different. Marlin anywhere from 250 to 800 lbs are possible, Black or Blue, they`re both hanging out. Sailfish are all tournament winners, Cubera Snappers to 60 lbs for the bottom fishing types. Yellowfin Tuna are not exactly on tap, but there have been some strange incidents where 100 lb Yellowfin have been boated. For the most part Yellowfin Tuna will be between 25 and 40 lbs around the High Spots in El Banco or at Corbeteña. No promises you´ll boat a nice Yellowfin tuna, but you have a ¨chance¨. Ten hour trips are what the doctor is ordering these days to Corbeteña, El Banco is a little farther and the possibilities of a thousand pound Marlin is always there. If you´re fishing and you want it world class, then you need to be in these two areas.

10 26 2014 f Puerto Vallarra Magnifico Sunset 600 pxls

With perfect blue water, plenty of Flying fish, Skippies, Goggle Eyes and bullet Bonito, there is no shortage of choices for the local species. Now that we´re out of the worst of Hurricane Season there is no reason to believe the fishing will take a turn for the worse until after the New Year´s Holiday season. So make your vacation plans to go fishing now, we´ll be waiting to hear from you.

It seems that we can fall into a pattern here in Puerto Vallarta where it seems like my weekly fishing report will sound much like the week before and this week is going to be the same. But it´s not like that is bad news when the fishing is great and there are plenty of fish to be had. Every Species we´re famous for in PV is here, working its ¨tail¨ off and chasing bait. Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado but forget larger Yellowfin Tuna. But you´ll have to get out of the bay to get your targeted ¨finned fantasy¨. We´re also smack in the middle of tournament season, and why would you schedule a tournament in anytime other than Fishings High Season?

Let’s start with the bay, our famous Bay of Banderas. First say good-bye to the Trash Line. The seasonal rains have all but come to an end as is normal as we enter the early weeks of October, but by mid October the threats of Hurricanes may not be gone, but they´re pretty much done for the year. So we don´t get the extra little attraction of easy fishing, but that doesn´t mean the fishing is any worse. Bonito to 35 lbs, Jack Crevalls to 40 lbs, Yellowfin Footballs around Yelapa and yes, even Sailfish in the bay! Four hour fishing trips will produce, but six hours is better since you may need to spend some time and fuel looking for finned pay load.10 15 2014 Black Marlin, 225 lbs, MBText

Once you´re at the mouth of the bay, the possibilities step up a notch. Anywhere from El Morro to Punta Mita is a wide open watery field of Sailfish and Dorado. With tons of Flying fish and ¨Bullet Bonito¨, a favorite bait for Marlin and Sailfish you can´t go wrong. Dropping lines as you exit the bay in any direction will produce arm burning action. Sailfish are a touch smaller this week in the 30 to 35 kilo range or about 80 lbs in average. Not exactly tournament winners, but they´ll be in the hunt. Dorado, anywhere from 20 to 35 lbs if lucky. It´s not exactly Dorado City out there, but when you´ve hooked-up and you´re in the battle, the only thing that matters then is boating that gold and blue dinner special.

10 14 2014 Brian Canadian, El Morro, wMBText

As you troll out from the islands, anything is possible and probable. The farther out you troll the more likely you´ll run into a Black or Blue marlin anywhere from 225 to 550 lbs. If you´re at El Banco, they´re bigger. Dorado in the 25 to 40 lbs are possible, at El Banco they´re bigger. It seems that the fish have spread out and you can now find just about any fish you wish, except Tuna, but then again that´s not exactly correct. There have been a few YF Tuna in the 100 lb range boated, but don´t hold your breath. So it all comes down to how lucky you are. . .  ¨Feeling Lucky¨ dude (in my best Clint Eastwood)? If you hit Corbeteña right now, there is no way you won´t hit some billfish looking to ¨hook-up¨. Enough Said, just get on the water and enjoy some of the best fishing grounds in the whole world.

10 14 2014 Brian Canadian, Corbeteña Dorado, MBText 600 pxlsSo there you have it in a nut shell, great fishing is not only a state of mind, it´s sore arms the next day. Fishing is mostly about the conditions and conditions are as good as they can get! Water temperatures are a perfect 84 degrees with perfect blue water. Clean, clear and high visibility blue water, combined with preferred baits like Flying fish, Bullet Bonito, 25 lb Skippies (Skip Jack Tuna), Google Eyes, and who knows what else is on the fish menu, but it´s all good! The bite is happening right now (as this article is being written) from 8:30a.m. to just after 1:00p.m.. Plan your day accordingly. If you´re looking to run lures, and you should run at least one, make sure it´s a pink and yellow combo or a petrelaro or something with purple in it (Marlin are diggin the purple right now). So there you are, I can´t believe I got this report finished with so few words, my publisher will love me this week!10 17 2014 Marina Vallarta Sunset, 715 a.m.

One thing for sure, when it comes to fishing what happened yesterday is no guarantee it will happen again tomorrow. Fishing is Fishing and as long as fishing is fishing, then it´s going to be fishing, which is the reason we don´t call it catching (I bet you re-read that a couple of times). Those who jumped on a boat last week expecting Yellowfin Tuna at Corbeteña for the most part came in empty handed. The sixty pounders turned into twenty five pounders, which may seem negative, but these smaller Yellowfin Tuna are perfect bait size and that is what the Marlin are chasing. Dorado are still happening at will and of course as you´d expect Sailfish have taken over. Even if the Tuna are on the sparse side, the fishing is still world class here in Puerto Vallarta.

10 14 2014 Brian Canadian, El Morro, wMBText

Sailfish at Corbeteña, MasterBaiters.com.mx

There has been some definite weirdness going on this past week. Sailfish have moved farther off shore, so for the moment hanging around El Morro is not the place to be for Sails. But if you head over to the Punta Mita Point you´ll find all the Sailfish you could hope to find. Dorado are also in the area anywhere from 20 to 35 lbs. And if you have the inkling to head out a little, you will find Blue Marlin, not bad if you ask me.

Corbeteña Master Baiter´s Billboard

The Rock at Corbeteña, MasterBaiters.com.mx

Those heading to the deep water fishing grounds of El Banco and Corbeteña will find this is where the Sailfish have moved in mass. The Yellowfin Tuna as mentioned earlier are now in the bait sized range, which of course is disappointing for those looking for Monster Tuna. On the other hand, Marlin love this sized ¨bait¨ and as a result it has drawn in more Blue and Black Marlin into the area. Those heading to El Banco will see even larger Marlin and could run into the 750 lb range, up from the 250 to 550 lb range of last week. There have been sighting of larger Yellowfin Tuna around the high spots, but the hook-ups spit the hook, so no pictures, no Tuna. Dorado anywhere from 25 to 55 lbs, Cubera Snappers to 65 lbs for the bottom fishing guys with the occasional and unexpected Wahoo in the 40 to 60 lb range. Most don´t target Wahoo (known as Ono in Hawaii) since you need to run wire leader. You see Wahoo have teeth like a Ginsu Knife and will cut through your line like butter. Most boated Wahoo here in PV is done by accident, the fish will somehow hook themselves in the corner of their mouth which means if this is you, you got lucky.  For now if you´re looking to target larger fish then you´ll be heading out to Corbeteña or El Banco, good luck amigo.

The Marietta Islands and El Morro are less than exciting right now. You have a slight shot at Dorado, but the Bonito and jack Crevalls, maybe some Snappers. All and all, nothing in the area for the moment that will grab your attention.

Inside the bay with the lack of the Seasonal Rains (as rainy season comes to an end) we are not getting that beautiful trash line. Still, there are small Dorado in the 15 lb range, Bonito everywhere, Yellowfin Tuna Footballs around the Yelapa area again, possible Sailfish in the La Cruz Area (who knows why) and a wealth of possibilities around the structure and rocks. If you´re lucky enough to be around the river mouths, you still have a shot at nice Snook (Robalo in Spanish). They´re great tasting and for the person looking for a short day where you come in with something for the dinner table, then do as the locals do. They don´t have to be huge to be fun and dinner table worthy!

Dorado with different markings at Corbeteña, MasterBaiters.com.mx

Dorado with different markings at Corbeteña, MasterBaiters.com.mx

One last thing, remember the female Dorado are all full of eggs. If you keep the females, then you´re just hurting the future of fishing in the area. When it comes to Sailfish, or any Billfish, there is no reason to bring in six for pictures. If you´re captain kills the Sailfish and Marlin, don´t tip them. If you are fishing inside the Tres Maria Islands, anywhere inside the twelve mile limit, even if you are on a paid charter boat, you´re a POACHER. It´s time we started thinking conservation in Mexico for future generations and for ourselves as we are ultimately responsible for the actions of the crews we´re paying for (subsidizing actually). If your crew keeps killing Billfish and you told them not to, they won´t listen to you. You see, you just took $150 usd out of their pocket for every Sailfish from fish markets. Now this is illegal, Charter boats are not commercial fishing operations, but when nobody enforces the regulations, then there are no regulations. Have fun, but be aware, you have the power of the tip and your return business.

It´s funny, the first day of October was like a cosmic fish cornucopia and out came massive amounts of Sailfish, Black Marlin, Dorado and yes Yellowfin Tuna in the 60 lb range. The water is a perfect blue, bait is abundant, the Trash Line is doing its magic and the bite is on. It´s Prime time for fishing amigos and if you ever doubted that Puerto Vallarta was a world class fishing area, all you have to do is get on the water and let the humidity melt those doubts as you down another beer, YeHa!

There are presently fish everywhere, pick a spot, take a shot. If you decide to start in the bay, you´ll find the Trash Line is doing its work and Skip Jack Tuna, small Dorado and a host of other species are lining up to feast on this organic trail mix, it´s an all you can eat fish smorgasbord that washes down the mountains and pours into the bay. Skip Jack tuna in the 15 to 25 lb range are all over the Yelapa area, Sailfish sightings and hook ups are not exactly automatic, but you have a solid chance in a six hour day of hook-ups with one of the finned fantasies. Snook at the river mouths and we even still have Jack Crevalls filling in the list. Short on Doe, not much time to go, then the bay will do the trick ¨fo-Sho¨. . .OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Heading out to the Marietta islands, one mile off the rock of El Morro or so you´ll find a sea full of Sailfish and smaller Dorado in the 25 lb range. It´s that time of the year where the Sailfish populations explode as we lead into the Pez Vela Tournament (Sailfish Fishing Tournament in English). In fact it´s so easy to get a Sailfish strike you´ll get tired of reeling them in. Not unusual to have five Sailfish strikes a day now in this area stretching out to Corbeteña.

Speaking of Corbateña, considered by many to be one of the top fishing grounds in the world with its varied abundant species you can´t go wrong at the rock right now. Starting with Black Marlin in the 250 to 500 lb range, the sizes of these world class gamefish will increase as we move deeper into October. World record sized Sailfish in the 45 kilo or 110 pound range are thick. Yellowfin Tuna in the 50 to 75 lb range are moving in nicely, but the bite with them has been a little weird as they were slow to take baits. Dorado in the average range of 35 lbs with occasional bulls weighing in at over 50 lbs. Cubera Snappers for the bottom fishing guys in the 45 lb range with Rainbow runners possible. Located thirty five miles out from Marina Vallarta, it will take you about two hours to get to the Rock, but once there your chances of boating a world record sized fish is not unthinkable amigos. Take the ten hour day and keep a bucket list memory in your mental hard drive. El Banco, ditto. Just remember if you´re looking for the large, huge fish, El Banco has it´s days. So toss a coin, they´re both on fire, El Banco is showing signs of some larger Black Marlin, so it´s a decision for the your morning discussion and plan development with the Captain!

Punta Mita, all I can say is AH Chihuahua. . It´s turned into Sailfish Central. Dorado are around any floating debris like a log or clump of weeds or even floating refrigerators. If you find a buoy, you hit the jackpot! If you´re around Sayulita and the Anclote Reef, then you´ll find all the arm burning action you could imagine.10 02 2014 Karl & Marlise Vitture 75lbTuna 600 pxls MBText

As far as fishing conditions go, you can´t beat them, water temperatures are in the perfect range of 86 degrees, 84 in the bay. Abundant Skip Jacks, Bonito, Google Eyes and Flying fish or 4 to 8 inches insure that we´ll have fish in the area and frankly I don´t understand why it took so long for these fish to find us again! The water is blue, close to shore it´s dirty as you would expect from the rain but it´s not very far from shore. Yes there seems to be a lot of ¨trash´ in the bay, that just means you go a little slower heading out to the fishing grounds, but this trash is necessary amigo. The bite is anywhere from 8:30 a.m. to after 10:00 am and in the afternoon after 1:00 p.m. and live bait is king, but run a petrelaro lure for the heck of it.

We´ve waited for it, and now we have it. Big fish, perfect conditions, plenty of bait and the weather is holding. Water temperatures are not too hot and they’re not too cold, they´re prefect. If this is your first time visiting or hearing about the fishing in Puerto Vallarta then you´re in for a real experience. Boats are available and waiting for your business, just find Marina Vallarta, walk the boardwalk, enjoy the Yachts and fishing boats, have a nice dinner and tell your friends. Just a word or two about Cabo: It looks like the Bisbee´s Tournament is still on in Cabo, but the relief work continues. The Airport is open now, but the locals and tourism are on their knees. To Help those in need in Cabo you can donate whatever you can to help these folks through the Bisbee´s Fishing Tournament Organizers who for years and years have supported Cabo with a world class fishing tournament. Bisbee´s is a trust worthy organization that will make sure those who need help will get help. Well it´s finally here, High Season for fishing here in Puerto Vallarta which coincides with October 1 which is the official beginning of High Season for tourism in PV as well. The summer is all but over, the kids are back to school, Tourism is picking up as you would expect and the fishing is incredible. Yellowfin Tuna have pulled back a little, less available these days, but the Black Marlin are filling the void. Dorado have moved in at all the fishing grounds and not any too soon. Water Temperatures are perfect, the water is as blue as you could ask for, when it comes to fishing in Vallarta, if you´re lucky enough to be here, then you´re in the right place at the right time amigo. Fishing in Puerto Vallarta is as good as it will get and if you´re a serious fisherman and this doesn´t excite you, then you´re dead!

Those looking for Yellowfin Tuna right now missed the boat from last week when they were circling the Rock and the High Spots. For now it looks like they´re ¨somewhere else¨ but they´ll be back. With bait thinning out in the area with Bonitos and Skippies at the deep water locations the larger fish will be in these areas. That is how the fishing cookie crumbles, but we´ll be ¨baking¨ more shortly… stay tuned.09 26 2014 Shaun Fieldler, Magnifico, Bay Dorado 8 hrs, 650 Pxls MBTxt

Picking a Charter Company, What You Don’t know Will Hurt You

Picking a Charter Company, What You Don’t know Will Hurt You

Written by Stan Gabruk

The following is a Re-Posted article I wrote a while back, but it still applies. With the cost of fuel going up at half a peso a day, or about thirty dollars a month per eight hour trip, things are getting dicy around fishing companies looking to cut corners and sell a product you think you´re getting, until you get on the boat. Review the important facts, some of you will see yourself being ripped off and how it happened. Still some will read this article and think they know how to handle things. Either way, if you are here in Mexico, Florida, Hawaii or Thailand, these priciples appy and are good reading. There is a second part to this article I will post in a few days which with my schedule means next week, or so.. Hahahaa… Anyway, check it out and sorry, no pictures of bad boats, they´d get upset and then maybe I would be dead, not just the rumors my competition puts out there….

Since the year 2000, Master Baiter’s has been in the Sportfishing Charter business. Some call it Deep Sea Fishing, others call it Sportfishing, what ever you choose to call it, it’s expensive and there’s no way around that simple fact of life. I always have potential clients enter my shop on the boardwalk in Marina Vallarta and they naturally ask for prices. When I collect all the information I need from them to make a recommendation, they are seldom happy about the price and that in itself is a deal breaker. Especially for many vacationing Anglers with a “whim” to go fishing for “Moby Dick”. When I do finally figure out the correct or best option for the client, he’s usually grabbing his chest from the heart palpitations he’s experiencing. I can understand that reaction for sure. When you tell a potential client that a ten hour trip on a nice and nicely equipped boat is going to run on average $1,000.00 usd for up to five people (total, not each person), this is normal. After years of this I think it’s finally time to get down in writing why things are the way they are. When you stop and realize that for the same money, you can rent a Jet Ski and pay more for that per hour than you are for a multi-hundred thousand dollar boat! Just to put things in perspective. Lets go into a little more detail on this since it can be a deal breaker.

Start-up and Operating Expenses: First, let’s take a look at the expense of the boat itself. If you’re lucky and you buy a three year old Luhrs Express with fresh engines for example, you’d be lucky to get one of these for $180,000.00 usd (it’s a ball park number so don’t beat me up for this over present market conditions). Now the engines on a Charter Boat that’s going out 15 to 20 times a month (which is a lot) will last three years before you’ll need to start thinking about what the engines remaining life span is. Without getting into this too heavily, I use the accounting / business standard three year return on my investment (ROI) formula for this, as do some others in Marina Vallarta. The boat payment alone, without interest attached for 36 months (3 yrs) is a $6,000.00 usd per month payment alone. Most financing a boat like this will extend the terms so their payment is in the neighborhood of $2,000.00 usd per month for multiple years, with a substantial down payment.  Tack on Fuel, insurance, water, electricity, cleaning products, oil changes, Equipment, salaries, fishing licenses for a year, Line, Lures, Poles, maintenance, Reels, ADVERTISING, more equipment and you start to get a feel for what the upfront expenses are before you ever see a dime in profit. Don’t forget, you’re a startup company so people won’t know of or about you.  With all these expenses and some I didn’t mention, the actual running expenses / cost of the 32 ft. boat will ultimately run approx. $743.00 usd per 12 trip (1/3 to 1/2 being fuel alone, rest being fixed cost). If as an owner you charge $1,000.00 for that trip, the owner saw maybe $257.00 usd over operating expenses in profit. Hit this amount with taxes or Hacienda as they call it here in Mexico, and I’m sure you can see where this is going. I’d also like to emphasize that 15 trips a month is considered a heavy traffic month, so the numbers can go south in a heart beat if demand for your services dry up due to bad economies like in the USA now. Put this all together and you’ve got a dicey situation for the Deep Sea Fishing industry, especially if you’re new in the “neighborhood”. A risky business venture to be sure, yet we get those who want to retire and become Jimmy Buffet Living in Margarita Ville where life is a constant party. Well folks, it doesn’t work like that, it’s not glamorous or a big money maker.

Average time in business for start up charter companies is 2.5 yrs in business or less. That’s how long it usually takes people to figure out they’re not having fun or making any money and most likely both. Hell, they’re not even covering their expenses with low charter months and eventually the money will just dry up and there goes the fantasy. The competition doesn’t help when they sell their boats for less than operating cost, but hey, they got few dollars I their pocket today. They worry about tomorrow when they can’t avoid it any longer.

Charter Services in Florida, Hawaii, and Cabo all price their charters considerably higher which makes Puerto Vallarta the best value for your Sportfishing dollar as things stand now! With Marine Fuel in the $2.40 (conservative) a gallon range, it’s less than half what they’re paying for it in the Caribbean, Hawaii or Florida!

Recently in PV, Many existing charter companies with good reputations are updating their charter boats with newer boats, yet prices are staying stable because of a noticeable slow down in tourism. With all the financial balls people are juggling in North America the budget fisherman has been hit hard. But the growth in popularity of Puerto Vallarta and the sport is off setting the lower levels in tourism. People with money will always have the money they want to do what they want. Big Game Fishing has never been cheap and it never will be. For those with the necessary cash flow, The World has turned its eyes our way and things are changing accordingly…..

One thing to look out for is the guy who says he can take a deposit on a specific boat, he may even have a slip of paper with a number on it, but it doesn’t mean a thing amigo. Last week I placed two different sets of people who gave a person a deposit for a day of fishing, just to find out when it came time to go, the boat was no where to be found. No contact, Nobody. I tried calling the boat that was “chartered” only to find the boat was already booked and confirmed for other people. Those unsuspecting folks were robbed and didn’t find out for three days after they dropped the deposit. Don’t be fooled, Use an established Charter company with an office from which they work from. If you don’t have that, and I don’t mean a mini mart, you’ve got a possible vacation disaster.  So beware of who you’re dealing with…..

About Captains and Crews: They say there is no substitute for experience and here in Puerto Vallarta (PV) truer words were never spoken. Many, if not most of the Captains here grew up on the docks learning from their Fathers and Grand Fathers. There are many third generation charter Captains that know this area better than the back of their hand. The problem is, this is Mexico and most Mexican Captains and crews don’t speak English (all of ours do). This can make communication difficult for the vacationing Angler. So the Captain with good, maybe not great English skills will be favored over the non-English speaking Captains. Now I can more than understand this since a person coming down from Canada or the States will find a comfort factor in being able to communicate with the Captain….. Imagine that. So when a boat owner chooses a Captain, he has to choose from a limited few that may or may not be the best choice available. Coming down to the Marina or reading articles online will help the decision making process but you never know what you’ve got until you’ve been out with one. Many people come to PV year after year going from one company to another looking for the correct combination of ability, quality, comfort factor, and price! Since people are creatures of habit, if they have fun, you’ve got a locked in return client! They’ll come back year after year, since they already like the boat and crew, why change??

Some Captains come in consistently with fish, while others will tell you they’re the best, yet choke when the chips are down. Now we all know fishing is fishing and on any given day you can come in skunked, it happens to the best of us. But as a charter company owner I’m looking for everything, Perfect English, Experience, reliability, a dash of personality and the ability to come in with a full fish box when others are coming back “empty handed”. For those off days when you come back with an empty fish box, we’ve all heard the horror stories, the very least you want is a Captain and Crew that you feel gave it their all. Changed lure color often, tried different things and had the tools necessary for several fishing methods! Not just trolling the six lures they may have.

So how would the general public coming down to Puerto Vallarta know which Captain is best for them? Well amigos, it’s almost impossible to tell if you’re not in the middle of the action. That’s where we come in, making sure we have the best Captains available on our boats so you don’t have to worry about such things. The boat you were on last year may have been great then, but things change rapidly in Marina Vallarta and the captain and crew, hell even the owner may have changed since the last time you went out fishing with them. Everything has changed about that boat, except the name that is. So choose a reputable Fishing Charter Company and you’ll most likely not be disappointed with your day on the water.

Now remember, this article is for the average guy hoping to learn a little something from an insiders view. Again the goal of this article is to share information with the average person so “he” can better understand why things are, the way they are!

Lets Talk Equipment / Tackle:  Sportfishing makes the expense of Golf look like nothing in comparison. When it comes to Big Game or Deep Sea Fishing here in Puerto Vallarta (PV), where it’s very possible to boat a world record fish, you just know it’s going to be expensive. If you compare a rig as I call it, or a fishing pole / reel set-up to that of a bag of golf clubs (about the same cost, balls and all), you could spend between $1,200.00 to $2,000.00 usd dollars in the blink of an eye. Take this number, multiply it by ten to fifteen times and you’ll have a basic idea of the minimum requirements for a professional charter boat when it comes to poles, reels, line and lures. If you’re looking for smaller fish inshore or larger fish at El Banco or Corbetena, you have to have the correct rig for the species targeted and for conditions that day. Mix in hooks, line, Flouro Carbon leader (expensive), gaffs, harnesses, swivels ($15 usd each), Kites, Down Riggers etc. , the list just goes on and on. Nothing is cheap, tack 30% on to the normal USA cost for these items just because you’re buying them in Mexico and you start to see what we’re talking about. You can try sneaking it in, but good luck, they love finding new fishing gear in suitcases as they’re checked in Customs.

Now the Charter Boat that doesn’t have the best equipment and tackle, well this will become obvious when you head out and snap the line ten times in one day on a boat who’s using stressed line….. We all lose fish, but not a bunch in a row from broken line. If this happens it’s old, chaffed, and ready for the trash bin. The Angler spending a thousand dollars for a trip to catch Moby Dick deserves much more than the opportunity to lose a fish on a half full spool of stressed line.

That’s another point, Getting spooled in this day and age is unacceptable and you should never go on a boat that doesn’t have Spectra Backed reels. Especially when you’re looking at Grander Marlin and Monster Yellowfin tuna from June to Mid January! Once you’ve boated or fought a larger billfish or Yellowfin Monster you’ll be glad you had new line. But even then, the life span of the line is between five and ten big fish, especially billfish. The fishing line these days are designed to perform, but not forever. It stretches and gets chaffed by bills, sun, salt and age. Fresh line on full reels is very easy to see and is an indicator for what you could expect on that charter boat. So the next time you’re out choosing a charter, ask to see the equipment if possible. The whole day will depend on the mere fact that the charter boat owner spends fifty dollars to reline a reel so these things won’t happen for the worse constantly. But remember, like I said earlier, breaking line is part of the game, but not ten times in one day! Everyone wants to save a buck or two, but make sure you get what you think you’re paying for, not what your wallet tells you. You’re better off waiting another year and doing it right with the opportunity to have the time of your life….

Let’s talk about the service end of the business: I’ve talked before on how people look for a charter company. First they may check out the internet at home, but many wait until they come down to Puerto Vallarta to get the “feel” of the area. First they talk with the guy who gets their luggage to the taxi at the airport when you first arrive. Then he’ll talk with the taxi driver, Next comes the concierge at the hotel, the waiter in the restaurant, people around the pool and finally he’ll find his way to Marina Vallarta and walk the gauntlet. There are companies in Marina Vallarta that are the flavor of the month. One guy or company which just sprung up this past summer went out of business selling Roasted Chicken and now books really cheap boats out of Los Penas Marina. They’ve got a nice, cheap office with pretty furniture and a nice logo to impress you. Then also got a guy who’s standing on the board walk (or walking the boardwalk) asking you if you need anything from a tour to a fishing charter. Now this guy can’t tell you what kind of baits are working right now, but he’s quick to talk of his twelve boats. Of course he can’t remember the names of but two, but he’s got twelve!

Check out internet travel forum sites about the area or sites like Trip Adviser, World Wide Fishing Guide or Fodor’s travel guide, where slouch companies can’t afford the price of participation. Look for recommendations from travel agencies, articles, travel guides again like Fodor’s, the hotel concierge, but locals that live in the area are always the best. Word of mouth is still the best advertising. Vacationers and travelers in general are always more than willing to share their experiences, mostly bad. I’ve always found that flattering words may go unsaid, but a bad time will get plenty of volume when it’s time to speak of horrible experiences

Service is first and foremost, no matter how much you paid for your day on the water. Naturally lower cost providers should come with lowered expectations.  Having said that, I don’t care if you live in Mexico or on Mars, service is a basic fact of life in any business. Service doesn’t cost the operator or Owner a thin dime more than he’s already spending. It all comes down to getting the most from your people and making sure clients are not only having fun, but are being provided the service they don’t know they need. Do they meet you on time at an agreed to meeting place? Is the boat fueled up with bait and ice, ready to go? Are there any money issues that you’re unaware of until that moment of departure (This happens all the time)? Do you have your contact persons phone number if need be? Do you know your boats name / location? All important stuff that should not be a mystery! Was the crew courteous and pleasant? Do they interact with you? Do they listen to your request? Do they release when informed of this desire or not? Did they tell you they speak English, just to later discover they know ten words of English? This and the list could go on for ever.

All very important things to consider when choosing a charter company…..

Well here we are once again, the end of High Season for tourism and the beginning of High Season for Fishing. As the seasonal visitors head back north it´s the biggest signal the seasons are changing. Soon the fishing fanatics looking for Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Tuna, etc. will descend on PV. We are already seeing signs of Black and Blue Marlin at El Banco. Water temperatures are inching up slightly, bait is more abundant (if that´s possible), the water is clear green and breeding season is all but finished, finally! Yes we´re on track for a wonderful fishing season and it all starts NOW!

We are now reserving the blog page for Daily conditions, interesting special articles, and of course our famous ¨Fish Porn,Safe for Your 12 yr Old¨ …… Stay tuned, but I´ll always link the report, so you´re covered….

Punta Mita Sees Return of Sardines, Rooster Fish, Pompano

Punta Mita Sees Return of Sardines, Rooster Fish, Pompano

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´sSportfishing & TackleOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Every year at about the second week of April winter begins to change into summer. When this happens we call it a ¨Transition period¨. Those involved in the fishing business (Captains, Crews, etc.) know and understand that this is essentially the worst time of year to go fishing. First and foremost is the fact that the local species are just full of eggs keeping their interest anywhere except in taking your bait. Then there´s the annual change of currents as they flip directions now moving south to north. As warm water moves in the sun hangs longer daily in the Tropical Skies of Puerto Vallarta. This churned, swirling water conditions can result in brown, coffee colored water as the sediment on the sea floor inside the bay gets churned up. Typically all at the same time, we have warm currents, cold currents and fish that are not interested in your trolled baits. That´s the bad news, the good news is; that will shortly be behind us. May brings stability, dominant summer currents and of course world class species, Sailfish being the first to arrive in thin numbers. For the last month, I´ve done my best to make this sound as positive as I possibly can and still keep the truth factor firmly in place.

Having said all that, some of the best news this week was the fact that Sardines, which have been in, then out, are in again. Water temperatures are still moderate and on the cool side, but inching their way up to 75 degrees or so on average. Not exactly blue water, but the clear green water we have, getting clearer everyday, is not hindering the fish. Blue water is preferable, green works. Now you may be asking yourself ¨Where¨ is it getting better? One place, the best place, is still off the point of Punta Mita. To be exact, the area around Sayulita and a bit north are just exploding with Rooster fish in the 35 to 60 lb range, Pompano running 45 lbs, Snapper are also taking trolled baits and are running the same general size of 15 to 30 lbs. Sailfish are in the area, but sparse. Dorado, forget about them for now. Eight hour trips are mandatory if you’re looking for any sizeable fish to put on the table. Sorry, that´s just the way it is.04 26 2014 Mi Jenny, 8 hrs, Chema 026

Forget about the deep water locations of El Banco and Corbeteña, same issues, cold water, no fish. Don´t waste your money heading out to these distant locations until you hear word of any action first. For the guys looking for sizeable Trophy Game fish, then you´ll need to bite the bullet when it comes to the fuel budget. Not to mention the sheer time it will take to get there and back on a slow boat conserving fuel so you can actually make it back under power, a biggie for sure. Yellowfin Tuna are about the only players at the Tres Maria Islands, so don´t go expecting anything other than Yellowfin Tuna. The Tres Maria Islands are a fishery, so I have a real issue with those fishing in this area, legal buffer zone or not. Once they fish out the fisheries, like the Seiners are doing now, then we can fold up the fishing industry and sell T-Shirts to tourist… wait, I already do that!

Those looking at short day fishing will still find fun action in the bay with Jack Crevalls, Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna, smaller snappers to 20 lbs max and more Sierra Mackerals than you can count. For younglings or those looking for some fun on the bay with a limited budget, then a super panga on the bay for four to six hours will do you nicely. For now the fishing could be better, but it´s not bad.

For now the latest fishing information for the locals or visiting tourist is key. You need to know when the bite is, mid morning by the way, what the water temperatures are and where the ¨hot¨ spots are. I started to put updates out to my Facebook friends. If you would like to receive my weekly updates, normally about two a week if things change, then send me an email and I´ll put you on my contact list. I will also start a video fishing report shortly, I have done one already, but I´m as exciting as watching paint dry, so we´re working on that as well.04 24 2014 8 hrs, Jeff Payne Mi Jenny 600 pxls So if you want to be informed of the latest and greatest, especially if you have local clients like the travel agents I work with, then this is a free service that is invaluable when you need it. My contact information is at the bottom of this article…  Looking forward to seeing your responses and questions amigos…..

Erratic Water Temps, Mega Bait vs Breeding Season!

Erratic Water Temps, Mega Bait vs Breeding Season!

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

Spring has sprung and love is in the air, or rather water where fishing is concerned. Conditions are challenging with swirling currents, rapidly changing water temperatures and an over abundance of bait. The Seasoned Captains with electronics have the edge with water temperatures fluctuating from 69 degrees to 74 degrees with the warmer water being the better the fishing. This may all sound strange, but for the locals we know what spring means. The fishing is actually fairly good, but again, it´s gonna be work amigo.04 02 2014 Rooster Fish wChema 600Pxls

Short day fishing in the bay is still alive and well with Jack Crevalls in the 30 top 50 lb range and frankly will be found all over the area. Snappers are running 10 to 20 lbs in the area and are taking trolled spinners or Sardines or silver spoon type rigs, larger than smaller. Sierra Mackerals, Skip Jack Tuna and Bonito and a host of others are all possible near the structure. Great fishing for those on a budget or those with kids, you´ll have fun.

The Marietta Islands is / are still running hot and cold, literally with the swirling currents and fickle fish. With breeding season in full swing it´s difficult at times to get these abundant and fickle fish to look at your baits. The warm areas are naturally working better than the chilled streaks, but Jack Crevalls don´t care much about cold and will most likely be in the cooler swirls. Rooster fish are abundant in the 35 to 60 lb range and like the rest of them will ignore your baits one day, then attack anything shinny the next. It all comes down to the bite. So when is the bite you may ask? The bite changes a little daily, so you have to stay on top of this crucial piece of observed information you can only get by being on the water. Right now we´re looking at a mid morning bite and a mid afternoon bite. Sleep in a little, the fish are on a schedule right now. Dorado are in and out. Red Snappers in the 30 lb range are taking baits nicely, Pompano in the 30 lb range, Amber Jacks, Skip Jacks and the list goes on. Again, hit the bite and have varied baits at the ready, they´re all fickle!

At the Punta Mita point, things have changed as well. Sailfish and the Marlin have thinned out and are almost impossible to find with the chilled water conditions. North of Punta Mita, north of San Pancho you have a shot at Sailfish and Dorado in the warm currents sliding down from Mazatlan. Other than that, not much reason to head to the point.04 05 2014 African Pompano, El Duende 600pxls

Those looking for trophy Yellowfin Tuna can find them at the Tres Maria Islands. For the record the islands are a restricted area where a prison is located. It´s also a fishery, which means it´s a breeding area for Yellowfin Tuna. The restricted are ranges from twelve to fifteen miles. This means fishing inside this area is illegal and has legal ramifications. Lately there have been more and more federal agents checking to make sure you respect the boundaries. Having said that 200 lb and larger Yellowfin Tuna are being boated daily and have taking bait with no spring spawning issues. FYI, there are at least five more longer range boats setting up business to head to these prison islands and soon there will be more and more anglers fishing our fisheries. With the Seiners on top of that, it´s just a matter of time now before the Yellowfin Tuna numbers are in the dumper. For what seems so obvious is lost on those raking in the money. It´s a hundred miles one way amigo, if you´re a fanatic, then you´ll be happy to pay in both time and money.

The good and the bad of it all is we´re in a transition period from winter to summer, with spring being just a road bump in between. Water currents will be changing and we may see some dirty water from the bottom sediments being stirred up with the changing currents. We will be looking at the seasonal changes in the next few weeks as we lead into summer fishing. We expect warm water conditions to return shortly and of course the warm water species of Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado. So be patient and at the ready. When things get moving again the fishing will be outstanding, which can be any day.

Warm Water Keeps Dorado, Sails and Rooster fish in PV

Warm Water Keeps Dorado, Sails and Rooster fish in PV

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

As we read the news and watch television reports of how the entire USA and Canada are basically under a blanket of snow or ice, things couldn´t be better in Puerto Vallarta. Warm Weather, delightful tropical breezes in the afternoon and for the fishing enthusiast we have a nice cherry on that cake and it´s called Rooster Fish amigos! Yes we are looking at three weeks straight of very large Rooster fish in the 60 lb range hanging off the Anclote Reef near Sayulita. For now the winter species has a touch of summer in air with Marlin and Sailfish still hanging out in the deep water areas north of Punta Mita. Warm weather, beautiful scenery and world class fishing, what the heck else could you ask for?12 24 2013 Mark Dombowsky, Magnifico, PUnta Mita

To be straight up with my loyal readers, all 54 of you, February is not the best month of the year to be fishing here in Puerto Vallarta, Banderas Bay to be exact. Not that the fishing is lacking, but because most people are looking for Monster fish like Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo to name a few. Now we still have Dorado, Rooster fish and Sailfish if you are in the right location, which is not in the bay amigo. Yes we´re moving into winter fishing which means Jack Crevalls coming out of our ears, billions of Sierra Mackerals that are great tasting, but not large. Snappers are picking up in numbers and size, just depends on where you head out to. Water conditions are the big factor here, cold water fish are here because at seventy something degrees, these fish are cold. As long as you keep this in mind, you´ll have the time of your life on the water with all the action you could ask for. So it all comes down to your expectations mixed with a strong shot of reality. The bottom line is there is a lot of fun to be had in the bay and it won´t cost you an arm and a leg.

For those lucky enough to head out to the deep water locations of Corbeteña and El Banco, well you´re seeing Blue Marlin in the 400 lb range sprinkled throughout the area. Water temps are warm enough at 77 degrees for them to tolerate. With abundant bait what self respecting fish would leave a favorite and abundant meal, a fish McDonalds if you will? Cubera Snappers taking trolled live bait to 70 lbs as well at Corbeteña. Find the spinner Dolphin and you´ll find Football Tuna in the 35 to 50 lb range. Not much else to say about these summer spots for the next few months, but for those looking for Marlin, this is where you want to be.

The point off Punta Mita is still, after three weeks running now the place to be. Rooster fish in the 60 lb and up range are still chasing Sardinas all over the place. A large bull Dorado was boated also in the 45 lb range, but this was not common place then or now. Still, the Dorado are in the 40 lb range and a little less abundant daily, so keep this in mind and get out there asap. Sailfish are taking live and trolled lures with Green and black combinations (petrelaros). Now this is not abundant fishing, which means your captain and crew will be changing baits on a regular basis (15 to 20 minutes). But you´ll find fish out there if you´re patient and positive minded!01 28 2014 Chris Federekson, Bella Del Mar 02 - Copy

El Morro and the Marietta Islands are seeing some strong Pompano action. A great tasting fish, you´ll be able to boat your fill in a few short hours. Snappers are in and out in the 30 lb range. Sierra Mackerals, Jack Crevalls, Amber Jacks, Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna, and even a shot at a Rooster fish in the 30 lb range. So it´s not exactly bad fishing out there!

Inside the bay it´s like fishing in a barrel. If you don´t catch at least one Jack Crevall never use that captain or boat again! Yelapa is seeing some football tuna in the 35 lb range and seems to be setting up house again. Bonito, Sierra Mackerals (good tasting) and a host of other possibilities like Snook or Robalo at the river mouths are always a possibility. Water flows are down and this may affect the number and size of the snook, but if near a river mouth give it a try.

Those heading to the Tres Maria Islands, or the prison islands will find sizeable Yellowfin Tuna. But remember to keep your distance from the islands of 12 miles. Otherwise you may find the Federalies chasing you down. Also when you see those Monster Yellowfin Tuna posted on the various bloody decks post, if you´re inside the limit area or boundaries and you´re catching fish, then you too are a POACHER! No way around it, just because there are some popular boats and web sites boasting the size and amount of Yellowfin they´re catching, they´re POACHING and they know it. You don´t, that´s why I´m here…. So keep your distance, keep your boat and keep out of jail! It all just amazes me how ¨sportfishing companies¨ will kill future fishing populations for today´s illegal rewards. Where can this all lead but to disaster?01 28 2014 Chris Federekson, Bella Del Mar 01 - Copy

Winter Species Begin to Take Over, Water Temsps Favorable, Rooster Fish Return

Winter Species Begin to Take Over, Water Temsps Favorable, Rooster Fish Return

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

This week we´ve seen the beginning of the yearly seasonal change from summer fishing and summer species to winter fishing. The species that will be dominating for the next several months are Jack Crevalls averaging 35 lbs, Sierra Mackerals on 20 lb average, Skip Jack Tuna, Bonito and for the ¨lucky¨  Sailfish will hang year round off the point of Punta Mita. Those looking for Dorado, Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna will soon be out of luck. Frankly it may already be too late in the season for Marlin and Yellowfin tuna of any size.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Water Temperatures have dropped slightly to the 79 degree range. We should be seeing Striped Marlin moving in as they enjoy cooler water temperatures than Black and Blue Marlin. We always know winter fishing is coming as we get about two to three weeks of Striped Marlin as they begin to migrate south to more temperate waters.

The unexpected winter rain storms have faded, the water is blue and fairly warm. Skip Jack tuna have been abundant in the bay along with Sierra Mackerals, Jack Crevalls, Bonito, and a host of other possibilities like grouper, Roballo and of course Needle fish. A four hour trip in the bay is inexpensive, fun and the family won´t go brain dead from the boat ride. 02 10 2012 Snappers on Andele 600Pxls

The Marietta Islands are still luke warm. But we have had 60 lb Rooster fish move back in. Not exactly abundant, you´ll have to do a little work, but they´re out there and with a smidge of luck, you´ll be pleasantly surprised at the strength and power these fish have.

Corbeteña has chilled out a bit, with illegal long liners in the area with their miles long ¨long lines¨ are ruining the Dorado fishing in the area. Still, Dorado are in the 35 to 50 lb range, a change from the 60 pounders of last week. The Wahoo that was around the rock has moved on for now. Sailfish are still in the area, but moving mostly north near Punta Mita. Not much to say about Corbeteña and less to say about El Banco. For now, I suggest eight hour trips to the Marietta Islands. There are plenty of Cubera Snappers over 60 lbs, they´re great tasting and abundant.

Again, if you can find some safe, long line free waters at the point of Punta Mita, Dorado to 35 lbs and Sailfish are still hanging around the area. Not unusual to boat Sailfish all year long off the point, the numbers for the last few days have dwindled. Again, we get this strange change when the seasons change. 10 04 2013 Shannon Trahan, Magnifico, 001a

The Marietta Islands are where you´ll find the Rooster fish and if that was all we had to offer it would be enough. Bonito, Snappers, Jack Crevalls, Needle Fish and more are there waiting for you to show up. So take the family out for a short day and have the time of your life. The whales are here in the bay now along with Manta Rays and the possibility of seeing Whale Shares as well.

Just a brief note, Marina Vallarta is in a state of turmoil as all the boats in Marina Vallarta have been informed that the leases are no longer in effect, five years after they expired. Like any change, nobody is very happy about seeing their dock fees increase to real world pricing. For now my suggestion is and has been to leave Marina Vallarta and let the legal suits settle. Marina Vallarta will be rebuilt. It will be beautiful when all the upgrades have been done, but until then it´s going to be a sticky situation in Marina Vallarta at best.

Dorado Everywhere, Marlin Hanging Around, Water Conditions Perfect in PV

Dorado Everywhere, Marlin Hanging Around, Water Conditions Perfect in PV

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

We have a great report this week folks. The water still green in some areas from the mucked up ocean bottom, but the water is mostly blue and full of fish! Water temperatures are holding nicely at 82 degrees, abundant bait at all the fishing grounds, I mean it´s just great to be fishing in Puerto Vallarta right now. Makes me wonder how anyone could put up with that cold weather up north when it´s just so beautiful here in my corner of Paradise!Jpeg

The Bay of Banderas, our Puerto Vallarta bay is just full of Jack Crevalls from 20 to 45 lbs, Skip Jack Tuna in the 20 to 45 lb range off Yelapa. Bonito, Sierra Mackerals to 30 lbs and that´s just a four hour day of fishing amigos, YeHa!

Off El Morro, Rooster fish disappeared as fast as they came in, but there are still some hanging off this ignored area. If you´re looking for Roosters, then this is about the only area you´ll find these demon fish! The Marietta Islands for the moment, strangely enough is just a few heart beats from dead. Si, Bonita, Jack Crevalls, Sierra Mackerals and maybe some smaller Dorado. For the time being, not the place you want to spend any fuel dollars on. Not normally the case.Jpeg

If you find yourself in the Golden Triangle, the area between El Banco, Corbeteña and the Marietta Islands, then you´ll have some fish stories to share for sure. Dorado in the 45 to 65 lb (Bulls) are anywhere from Corbeteña to El Banco. Cubera Snappers to 80 lbs, huge for the species. Jack Crevalls by the billions, Sierra Mackerals (the tasty ones) averaging over 20 lbs, Rooster fish are sparse, but there in smaller numbers. Blue and Black Marlin are being boated daily in the 400 to 650 lbs on the larger side. Plenty of Skippies to keep the locals happy and abundant. Water temperatures as mentioned earlier in the 80 to 82 degree range, perfect for all the local species. If you head out pretty much anywhere, you´re catching your fill of whatever species you are looking for, except for Yellowfin Tuna. Disappointingly Yellowfin Tuna have not been schooling around as we have come to expect at this time of the year. Still, there are smaller Yellowfin Tuna in the 60 to 100 lb range, but you´ll be playing ¨Hide and Seek¨ with these highly desired species. If you´re in the Corbeteña area, the rains from Acapulco to Mazatlan is putting entire trees and stumps in the water at the deep water locations and if you find one of these welcome visitors you´ll find Shark, yes I said Shark. Dorado, Small Bait fish, anything is possible and hugely abundant. What else do I have to do, drag you out there?

The area off Punta Mita is bursting at the seams with Dorado, Sailfish and did I say Dorado? Mostly Blue Marlin with some Black Marlin about fifteen miles out from the point with the possibility of, dare I say it, 60 lb Yellowfin Tuna. 10 22 2013 Yellowfin Tuna 85 lbs enhanced 500 pxls MBText

Short report I know, but the fishing is so good right now, you´ll be doing yourself a dis-service if you´re a fisherman and always wanted to see what it would be like to do some deep sea fishing. Even the bay is perfect for the family types where you can see whales, catch Jack Crevalls at will and maybe even get some snorkeling in. But if you´re here in PV get out on the water, it´s mother nature at her best. Bring the movie camera, whale videos are good therapy for when you need a PV fix!

Rooster Fish Return, Winter Species Following Winter Currents!

Rooster Fish Return, Winter Species Following Winter Currents!

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

Winter is moving in and with the return of the Whales in our beautiful Bay of Banderas, we all know the winter currents are beginning to come in. We´re seeing some dirty water swirled throughout the area. In the clean areas the fishing is great, but the raked up sea floor muck is another thing. But we expect this when the seasons change. The good news is the fishing is still great and Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado and even Rooster fish can be targeted with high expectations! Remember, the dirty water at this time of the year is muck swirling from sediment on the ocean floor. In rainy season it´s just dirty water from the mountains. But this muck is deep, thick and unpleasant to fish so don´t think it´s just a few feet or inches thick as it can be during summer rains. Jpeg

We´re seeing some dirty water appear around the deep water locations, but it´s streaky. Kinda like a swirled ice cream, you´ve got both dirty water and blue water at Corbeteña. So obviously the rock is not the place to be, but 12 miles north of the rock you´ve got Blue Marlin anywhere from 320 to 550 lbs hanging out. Magnifico had a Blue Marlin Strike and it broke a 300 lb leader, it was a bucket list sized fish for sure! Big Bull Dorado is super sized at 50 to 65 lbs! Sailfish, of course with Wahoo in the area as well. Bait is plentiful and water temperatures in the blue water is a perfect 80 degrees. Now the dirty water streaks are like 77 degrees. Yellowfin tuna are MIA, but if you do find them they´ll be 80 lbs or so. Won´t have Yellowfin Tuna here for much longer unless you want a sixteen hour day to the Tres Maria Islands. El Banco is just dirty water with little reason to head out this way unless you want 30 lb Skip Jacks.

If you´re around the Marietta Islands Rooster fish have moved back in following the Sardines of course. Not huge, but fun sized at 35 lbs. Light tackle and Rooster fish are a match made in heaven. Dorado are small at 25 lbs, Bonito and Jack Crevalls are abundant, Sierra Mackerals are everywhere. Sailfish are there, but harder to find every day. If you want to give something different a try, Wahoo in the 40 to 60 lb range have been running around El Morro just a few miles off the island to the north east, if targeting this species you´ll find wire leaders are a must unless you get lucky and hook one in the corner of its mouth. Jpeg

Off the point of Punta Mita, 15 miles or so to the west you have the best chance of boating Sailfish and Bull Dorado 40 lbs and larger. It just depends on what is in the area. Producing like a Machine this year, this area has abundant bait, mostly clear and blue water with Black and Blue Marlin showing up unexpectedly.

The bay is alive and turning into the winter machine we love as it produces great short day fishing trips with plenty of bait, fish and stories waiting to be told. Jack Crevalls in the 35 lb range are our bread and butter come winter. Rooster fish can be found around the shallows of Nuevo Vallarta for the surf fisherman. Cast some Iron or Poppers then be ready. Sierra Mackerals are great tasting and fairly large at 30 lbs. Doesn´t sound like much, but the sheer numbers and boils of Jack Crevalls are impressive.

Soon the Marlin, Dorado and Tuna will be a memory until next spring. For now you can still have that bucket list fish or your dreams, if you act quickly. For those looking for short days, you´ll have the time of your life. If you have children why not go fishing, enjoy the presence of the Whales and then maybe do some snorkeling at the Marietta Island all on the same day trip? Call me, we´ll fix you up. To come to PV and not get on the water is like going to Colorado and not skiing. You´ll have the time of your life. Jpeg

50 lb Dorado & Marlin Return to Corbeteña!

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

Every year when the season’s change, the returning of the whales is the main indicator that winter is here. We see the fishing in the bay take a steep drop in action due to the Whales. We Love the Whales, but the fish, now that´s another thing. In the bay, the bait has taken a powder, split, vanished, left the building. Seems they think they´re going to be lunch. Same goes for the Marietta Islands which for the last couple of weeks has been less than spectacular. Of course what would you expect with no bait to speak of this past week? That´s not to say there is not great fishing still to be had amigos. Corbeteña, the machine is alive and producing well for those seriously interested in catching world class fish in some of the best fishing grounds in the world. If you´re on the cheap, the bay still has smaller fish. So we have you covered amigos.Jpeg

As I mentioned Moby Dick and his family have returned to the bay of Banderas for some good times, a little whoopee and a lot of new arrivals as baby Whales are being born all over the bay! And as I mentioned earlier, the bait believes it´s in their best interest to vacate the area before they get eaten. So needless to say you´re fishing ¨luck¨ will be less than spectacular in the middle of the bay. If you´re dead set on fishing in the bay Yelapa is still sporting Yellowfin Footballs in the 35 lb range, tasty for smaller Tuna. Bonito in the same size range along with Jack Crevalls in the 35 lb range as well are hovering at the south end of the bay. We are seeing Jack Crevalls increase in numbers and we always know the water temperatures are heading south when they arrive. But for now we´re very happy to have fish and the Whales in our watery back yard. Sailfish can still be found up near La Cruz Marina, but less abundant in the area for some reason.

The point at Punta Mita is still alive and well, but the action has slowed down a bit with some Sails to be had and Dorado still around the buoys. This will change soon, so get out there if you´re looking to stock some Dorado in your fridge. Blue and Black Marlin in the 400 to 600 lb range are still about fifteen miles off the point, not far from El Banco. So if you´re in the area, you may want to head a few miles farther out and see what´s happening around the high spots at El Banco! Marlin, Smaller Yellowfin in the 80 lb range are ¨in and out¨ as well.

The only real reliable fishing ground this week is once more Corbeteña. Thirty five miles out it will take about an hour and half to get there at a fair clip, but the journey is worth every minute once you hook into your first Marlin or Sailfish. Dorado has increased in size as well and are now running in the 40 to 60 lb size range. Blue and Black Marlin in the smaller ranges of 400 to 600 lbs are around the area now that there is Bait and more favorable water temperatures in the 81 degree range with blue water and smooth seas. I mean the conditions are so good, we forget how good we have it now until late March has us looking forward to summer once more! Cubera Snappers in the 50 lb range, Wahoo are still in the area. As a no schooling fish, Wahoo can be tricky to catch, you have to troll a little faster for them. The sharp razor like teeth make wire leaders a must. So you have to be ready to catch one if you´re targeting Wahoo. Now there are those who get lucky and just hook the fish in the corner of the mouth. These are the luck fish, the fish you should have never caught, but did! Those taste the best! Yellowfin Tuna in the 80 to 175 lb range, good luck in your search, it´s not going to be easy. Still, a few miles off the rock can produce some great results if you´re adventurous.Jpeg

A little local news, after years of corrupt port authorities allowing illegal boats to ¨operate¨ under the radar has finally decided to crack down on illegal fishing and tour boats in all the marinas here in the Puerto Vallarta area. For years these illegal boats who had no requirements for safety equipment, insurance, licenses or even the common sense to have a radio have operated and mostly put every legit fishing company out of business in Marina Vallarta. There we nearly fifty boats seized and ticketed throughout the area in the last few days. Finally!!!! For a couple hundred bucks a month illegal boats could operate a ¨business¨ and not worry about being put under a microscope. Those of us that went to the powers that be got deaf ears and excuses about how they deserve to make a living also, so it was never a even playing field. Now that these boats are being weeded out, the legal boats are seeing an upsurge in business as is Master Baiter´s. These enforced regulations will make it safer for the general public who will sacrifice safety for a better price. Of course safety is something you don´t think about until you need it. It´s like insurance, you don´t want to pay for it, until it´s needed and then you´re glad you had it. Same goes for a sinking boat, there is little chance you´ll have an issue even on an uninsured boat, but what do you do if the boat is sinking and your captain only has a cell phone and no radio. I guess you´d have to either swim in and hope they have a life jacket or hope the person he calls can tell who ever they reach to come find you and the boat in the great big bay before you get soaked and worse. Think about it, remember there are no liability laws in Mexico, be safe, be sure and be smart.

Bait Disappears, Whales Return, Lures Working!

Bait Disappears, Whales Return, Lures Working!

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

Every year at the beginning of December we see the Whales return to spawn as the bait runs for the hills. If that´s not bad enough, the Spinner Dolphin are in the area and instead of hanging out with Football Sized Tuna, they´re eating football sized tuna. So your bait, which is hard enough to make is not safe from the Spìnners! Seems like a problem. But the fish are still here, hungry for anything that mimics a bait. For you guys with those hundred dollar lures that promise to work so well, now´s your chance to put them to the test, if you´re not afraid of losing that ¨oh so pretty lure¨! Blue, silver and purple combinations are knocking them dead out there. What you don´t know this week will hurt your chances amigo, what you do know will make your day!06 17 2011 Michelle Stewart Crosby with Yellowfin Tuna, El Banco, Animal House, 12hr day 003 RedPIx 480

First, small fish all over the bay, especially where ever the Whales aren´t.  Now I love the Whales like everyone else until they chase the bait out and we´re left lacking for their presence. I know, I sound like my ex-wife and we can´t have that. Mucho Bonito around the bay, water temps are still perfect so anything is possible and available. Closer to shore is not a bad thing as late, structure is your friend. Snappers, Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna, Small Grouper, and the list goes on. Snook is still at the river mouths and Dorado, while sparse are sprinkled throughout the bay. For the fly fishing guy, we´ve got perfect sized fish for a 8 wt. Great days for kids at four hours or less with our special…. Sailfish, 10-6-10

The Marietta Islands have kinda churned to not exactly a halt, but it´s not exactly pumping out fish like we´re used to. Again, the Whales are a convenient excuse so we´ll blame them. Still, Sailfish are thick and available closer to El Morro toward the golden triangle. Marlin are not exactly abundant, but there are hook-ups every day in this area as well. Dorado is in the 25 to 35 lb size range. Skip Jack Tuna to 35 lbs, Bonito to 30 lbs, Snappers to 35 lbs, it´s like a 35 pound club out there! Still with the time and fuel dollar… Just keep your ears on for news of improvement and then jump on it.11 30 2011 4 hrs No

The REAL action this week was at Corbeteña. Water Temperatures are perfect 82 degrees, the water has never been bluer, calm seas, it´s just perfect except for one thing, THE SPINNERS! Now Spinner Dolphin are normally our friends since they hang with fifty pounder Tuna. But when they´re on the smaller side, they have no problem eating their smaller brethren!  Now these are Einstein fish. They know exactly how far up your bait to eat and not get hooked! When there is little bait to speak of, this will drive you crazy and while it seems kinda cool in the beginning. It´s not so cool when you have no more bait and the wrong color on your lures… if they work at all. We´re seeing some action though, the fishing is good, not fantastic, but somewhere in between good and great. If it´s action you want, Marlin in the 400 to 700 lb range are in the area, not abundant, but you´ll have a shot. Sailfish, they´re on tap everywhere and will be until the water gets cold. Yellowfin Tuna in the 80 to 125 lb range are also in the area, but you´ll have to use  your lucky charms on some days. Still, heading northwest from the rock out to as far as fifteen miles, you´ll find tuna. That is if you´re a mind to do such a thing like I would. Wahoo in the 120 lb range have been in the area with several reports of these monsters boated. Remember, their mouth is like a Ginsu Knife and will cut through wire leaders, imagine what they do to mono? So if you´re lucky and trolling a little fast, you´ve got a nice shot. Dorado, Yes we have Dorado amigo and they´re running in the 50 to 65 lb range for the moment, cross your fingers this continues. All and all, if you´re looking for fish go to Corbeteña. El Banco, Wahoo, Marlin, Sailfish, same here at Corbeteña and closer. A better choice for now. Oh, the bite…. You´ll start seeing more hits about 9 to 12 in the day… The late bite is like 3 in the afternoon right now. Put that in your back brain pocket.

Great Season Fishing, Marlin and Sailfish Dominate

Great Season Fishing, Marlin and Sailfish Dominate

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

Warm days, cool nights, blue skies and bluer seas make the conditions perfect for the fisherman looking for trophy sized gamefish with a minimum of effort! If this is you, then Puerto Vallarta is the place to be. Water Temperatures are leveling off, Plenty of bait, I mean if you´re here in PV now, count your lucky stars amigo, Paradise is boasting some of the best fishing in the world in our back yard!11 15 2013 Sailfish released 600pxls

For some reason the fishing at the deep water locations has gotten a little weird. Dorado are becoming hard to find for some reason as Sailfish and Marlin are taking over the point at Punta Mita. For weeks now this has been the ¨go-to¨ spot for guaranteed Dorado. The Sailfish numbers here are through the roof since it is Sailfish season. But the Dorado have thinned out and while there is still nice sized Dorado to be had, it´s not going to be automatic like it has been. If you have a mind to, Blue and Black Marlin are hanging off the point as well.

Where, ten miles off the giant rock off the point is Marlin of the Blue and Black Variety looking for a free lunch. Now again, not exactly abundant, but fishing always comes with its challenges. You´ll see them out there and they´ll take baits as well, so if you´re in the area, give it a try!11 15 2013 Monie fishinc Ceviche

Corbeteña, for the last few days it´s been a little strange here as well. Sapphire blue water and perfect air temperature don´t do much for the fish under your boat. For them, they want comfortable water temperatures, plenty of food and good visibility so they are happy fish for now. Now the question is what´s out there? Well, as the resident expert, you could say I am lacking in my predictions for the moment. Sailfish are very large in the 120 lb range. Dorado (35 lbs and up) are still here in the area, but you may have to roam a bit off the rock. Blue and Black Marlin are always in the area, you´ll have plenty of spotting for sure. Cubera Snappers are a no brainer these days at 60 lbs. Wahoo are getting sparse for the moment, but they come and go anyway. Yellowfin, mostly ¨out¨ for the last week are still out there in smaller numbers from 60 lbs to over 200 lbs, pray to the fish gods and you may get ¨lucky¨. El Banco, Marlin, Sailfish, that´s automatic. Dorado, maybe if the fish gods smile on you. Yellowfin Tuna, of course, but you may find yourself circling outward from the high spots up to twenty miles or so. Do keep the cost of fuel in mind, like that will be hard to do, and use your best judgment.

The Marietta Islands, it´s Sailfish City. Pretty much whatever you are trolling, the Sails won´t let anything else around you. Rooster fish, who knows, they were there a few days ago, for now, kinda iffy at best. Dorado in the smaller sizes (25 lbs or so), Snappers, Bonito, Skip Jack tuna. The usual players with no surprises. Worth your time, but for my fuel dollar, hit the Punta Mita area. 11 16 2013 Pecositas 8 hrs

I have to take a moment and express my displeasure this year with the 58th Pez Vela Tournament. This makes the second year our PV tournament has been taken away from Marina Vallarta by the Club De Pesca. Now there can be a million reasons, and I have heard many. All of them to me don´t hold water and in the name of greed, you will now pay to enter the gates to see the weigh-ins. But the weigh-ins are now in the cruise shop marina. Frankly, it takes the one great yearly events we had for fishing in Marina Vallarta. This of course hurts business in the Marina, it alienates the locals and in the end it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. To me, there is no good reason, security or fees or whatever the excuse is for taking the tournament out of Marina Vallarta was, it was a bad decision and I now find it hard to promote a tournament that is not in Marina Vallarta. Enough Said.

Great Fishing, Perfect Conditions, It´s Fish City

Great Fishing, Perfect Conditions, It´s Fish City

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

Once more I am happy to report that the fishing is outstanding, the conditions are perfect, air temperatures are dropping by the day, Plenty of bait, Water temps cooperating and I just can´t say enough positive things about fishing here in the Bay of Banderas for the time being. 11 11 2013 Nathan Howard , 8 hrs, Pecositas super panga

Corbeteña, located thirty five miles out from Marina Vallarta has once again performed as its reputation suggest. Yellowfin Tuna are still in the area running anywhere from 60 to over 200 lbs. Maybe larger, it´s been known to happen. Sailfish are taking over all the fishing grounds right now, it´s their season. Dorado, of course, in the 45 to 65 lb range. Black Marlin are still running in the 500 to 750 lb range, but a touch more abundant this week. Same story for Blue Marlin seems to be an even mix. Wahoo are thinning as well and they´re not the largest, but with plenty of bait and clean blue water, they may hang for a while. Running in the 60 lb range, they´re the best tasting fish in the ocean amigo.

El Banco is seeing Cubera Snappers in the 65 lb range, Sailfish in the 80 to 100 lb range and Yellowfin Tuna, a little larger in the 80 lb and up range are eight miles north of the High Spots amigo. Finally something I can write about here at El Banco. Known as the place for World Record Fish, El Banco this year has been kinda taking it easy. For now Black and Blue Marlin are here as well. Dorado in the 45 lb range, with the possibility of hooking into Moby Dick. For my money though, Corbeteña is closer, cheaper on fuel, same fish, same conditions, but hey, that was yesterday… things could have changed.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Marietta Islands are a carbon copy of last week. Sailfish, Dorado in the smaller size ranges, Snapper in the 30 lb range. Rooster fish are getting kinda sparse, but still a shot for the light tackle guys with a hankering for arm burning action on the light! Punta Mita, just down the way a bit is still producing larger numbers of Dorado than anywhere else this week. Sailfish are taking over the whole area as is normal for this time of the year, and that is why we´re going to have the 58th Annual Pez Vela Tournament coming up this week as you are reading this article. Check the local news for details or the web site at: FishVallarta.com. Signup is the 13th, tournament begins the next morning at 7 a.m. and you must be back by five O´clock if they go with the normal finish times. Many boats are still available for the tournament if you need one in a hurry!

Inside the bay is the normal fare, smaller fish around the rocks and structure. In the bay you´ll find Dorado, Needle fish, Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna. Sailfish are tournament winning sizes at La Cruz. Why they are hanging out here for weeks now is a mystery, but still, they´re reliable. River Mouths are alive, for the local who wants great dinner catch, then Robalo is Snook which means a tasty white meat fish. Snappers are to be had as well in schools, but not too plentiful for some reason.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Water Temperatures are still the issue they have been all year, but it seems like there may be some changes in currents as we see the fish we like to see coming back in more abundant numbers as we enter the ending stretch of fishing’s high season. Bait, plenty, no worries anywhere. The bite is running about 9 in the morning and a little later in the afternoon for now, but keep an eye on the moon phases if you´re targeting Tuna. For some reason it changes their bite, but Marlin and other billfish will not be affected for the most part… the bite is the most important factor for them.

High Season Brings 200 lb Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo!

High Season Brings 200 lb Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo!

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

All year long we wait for High Season. We know the tourist are back and we know we´ll see more people coming to Puerto Vallarta by the day. This time of the year we see the days grow shorter and cooler. Yet the water temperatures will take weeks and weeks before they begin to drop. For now, conditions could not be better and when fish are abundant, you have a recipe for success. But first you have to be on the water to take advantage of our world class fishing in the Bay of Banderas!Monster Yellowfin Tuna Jeff Illingsworth

Well, I am happy to say I could have almost used last weeks fishing report as this weeks model. More tropical disturbances, rain is tapering off and the fishing is picking up again as we are into the tournament season. Cabo has calmed down from the tournament frenzy as the locals prepare and study for the 85th Pez Vela Fishing Tournament Nov. 13th thru 16th. It´s a real happening for Vallarta and always done up well by the Club de Pesca organization. The premier fishing club in the Puerto Vallarta area will once again host this shin-dig in Marina Vallarta. For more details visit the web site at FishVallarta.com.  Boats are available but you better get on the stick if you want to compete. Black Marlin Corbeteña wCapt Kawi

Corbeteña is still working it´s magic with smaller Wahoo in the 40 lb range all over the place. Remember to use wire leader, or you´ll lose another one of those expensive lures! Live bait is almost never used on Wahoo, they attack a bait, bite it in half and then come back for the pieces. It freaks the fish out when a half bait keeps moving behind a boat! So lures are always used on Wahoo, with wire leaders! I have personally seen one of these Wahoo´s chew through a stainless hook… granted it was a lot rusty, but still, a hook? Best tasting fish out there, these are referred to as Ono in Hawaii if you are more familiar with that name. Sailfish, Dorado in the 45 lb range, Marlin of the Black Variety mostly, but Blue Marlin are sprinkled in. But Yellowfin Tuna are beginning to pick up in size and density. You can expect to see then running from 80 to 150 lbs with the occasional 200 lb beauty just waiting for you to show up! Plenty of bait in the area, no problems making bait. Water Tempes are still warm at 85 degrees, but for now Tuna are not too deep and taking surface trolled Google Eyes. Kites are working well also, but for now the extra trouble associated managing a kite, just troll, you´ll have the same results.

El Banco is showing stronger signs of Black and Blue Marlin with ranges in the 450 lb to 700 lb range, but mostly under 500 lbs. Sailfish as well along with Cubera Snappers and a few smaller Yellowfin Tuna, but for the record, fish move and YF Tuna love the high spots. So keep an open mind.

Marietta Island and El Morro, same story as last week. Sails in the 80 lb club, Rooster fish are still around the reefs in the 35 to 60 lb range. Needle fish, Snappers to 40 lbs, Dorado around 30 lbs and the list goes on. Well worth an eight hour day.

Punta Mita, what can I say, Dorado, Sails, more Dorado, it´s a machine. Frankly is you´re looking for more variety I´d be heading out to the Marietta Islands. Still, 100 lb Sailfish and 40lb Dorado are not chopped liver by any stretch. Trash line is soon a thing of the past as the rains subside, so get out there already! They are not going anywhere for the next few minutes anyway.11 16 2013 Dorado Mariettas

The bay is still a thing of beauty. River mouths are alive with Snook, Yelapa is still looking at 35 to 60 lb Yellowfin Tuna. Sailfish are in love with La Cruz this year. Dorado, Snapper in the bay and soon we´ll see the Whales and these fish will think they´re lunch. So get at them before things change. Short days, nice weather. It´s a real luxury to explore the bay and see what it has to offer. You really have not seen PV until you have seen it from the ocean, in a wor, spectacular .
